Notes: Summary Feeding under conditions of reduced oxygen supply prompted an increase in serum, arterial and brain tissue levels of thiobarbituric acid (TBA)-reacting substances. These observations indicated the possibility that hypoxia might be one of the factors predisposing to the accumulation of lipid peroxide.

Notes: Summary The MRL-lpr/lpr(MRL/l) mouse is a new animal model for human systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and skin lesions with hair loss and scab formation are one of the characteristic manifestations in this mouse. We investigated the histopathology of the skin lesions in MRL/l mice and studied the related autoimmune phenomenon. Light microscopical observations revealed hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, hypergranulosis, liquefaction, vasodilation in the dermis and T-cell infiltration into the dermis at the age of 5 months (mo). Immunohistological studies showed the presence of immunoglobulins and/or complement depositions at the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ). In some mice there was deposition of immunoglobulin at the DEJ at 2 mo and in 90%–100% of MRL/l mice at over 5 mo. Temporal relationship was present among cutaneous immunoglobulin depositions, the occurrence of anti-DNA antibodies and proteinuria. These findings suggest that MRL/l mice might provide a new aid for studying the biological mechanisms of the development of skin lesions in human SLE.

Notes: Abstract In 1974, a 2-year-old boy was diagnosed as having X-linked hypophosphataemic rickets (XLH) because of severe rickets and hypophosphataemia. The vitamin D metabolite concentrations, blood and urine chemistry and renal 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 (25 OHD3)-1α-hydroxlase were measured in 1982 (about 2 weeks after withdrawal of medication). 1α-hydroxylase was 392 pg/mg tissue/20 min in the patient, which was high compared with aged-matched controls (69.7±28.5 pg/mg tissue/20 min, mean ±SD, n=7). Our present studies showed that the 1α-hydroxylase activity in the patient with XLH was elevated. Therefore, the normal or low 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25-(OH)2D3) concentrations in XLH patients could be due to accelerated catabolism of 1,25-(OH)2D3 or abnormally regulated 25OHD3-1α-hydroxylase in response to hypophosphataemia, although significantly elevated above that in normal controls.

Notes: Summary To investigate the mechanism of the relative beta-antagonist and agonist properties of pindolol, the cardiovascular effects of i.v. pindolol 0.01 mg/kg were studied in 23 subjects with different baseline levels of cardiac beta-adrenergic function. Baseline cardiac beta-adrenergic activity was assessed by the decrease in heart rate following intravenous propranolol 0.2 mg/kg (ΔHRβ) after parasympathetic blockade with intravenous atropine 0.04 mg/kg. Cardiac beta-adrenergic sensitivity was defined by the positive chronotropic effect of a three minute infusion of isoprenaline 0.005 µg/kg/min. The chronotropic effect of intravenous pindolol was negatively correlated with resting beta-adrenergic activity (R=−0.81, p〈0.001). The traditional point of ΔHRβ, at which pindolol shifted from beta-antagonist to beta-agonist action, was 17 beats/min, i.e. pindolol decreased heart rate in subjects with ΔHRβ greater than 17 bpm, and increased heart rate in those with ΔHRβ less than 17 bpm. The chronotropic effect of intravenous pindolol, however, was positively correlated with beta-sensitivity (R=+0.73, p〈0.001). Thus subjects with the greatest increment in heart rate with isoprenaline had an increased heart rate with pindolol, while those with the lowest increment in heart rate with isoprenaline had a decreased heart rate with pindolol. Intravenous pindolol decreased cardiac index and increased total peripheral resistance in the group with ΔHRβ more than 17 bpm, and it had the contrary actions in the group with ΔHRβ less than 17 bpm. Blood pressure in both groups was not significantly changed by pindolol. Compared to endogenous catecholamines, pindolol was considered to possess higher beta-adrenocepter affinity and weaker beta-adrenoceptor stimulating action. Therefore, pindolol produced a net beta-blocking action in subjects with elevated cardiovascular sympathetic nervous activity and beta-stimulating action in subjects with reduced sympathetic nervous activity.

Notes: Abstract Analyses of the latest Jurassic Santiago Peak volcanic rocks from the western zone of the Peninsular Ranges batholith reveal the existence of two independent groups; one comprising basalts and andesites of the island arc tholeiitic series, and the second made up of the dacites and rhyolites of the subalkaline (calc-alkaline?) series or silicic series. The basalts and andesites have V, Co and Ni contents similar to those estimated for the residual melts in equilibrium with the Peninsular Ranges gabbros. This fact together with the tholeiitic nature of the gabbros and the intimate spatial and temporal relationship between the SPV and the gabbros suggests that the basalts and andesites had a common origin with the gabbros. The mafic volcanism and plutonism seems to have occurred in a youthful island arc and the silicic volcanism in a mature island arc or a continental margin.

Notes: Abstract Fuming nitric acid treatment has been made on a melt-quenched and an annealed isotactic polypropylene film. The treated samples were characterized by measurements of weight loss, density, molecular weight, spin-lattice,T 1, and spin-spin,T 2, relaxation times. Concurrent with the increases in weight loss, density and a decrease in molecular weight, increases inT 1l andF c , a fraction of crystalline region, and decreases inT 2a andF a , a fraction of amorphous region, were observed as a consequence of the decrease in an amount of noncrystalline portions. However, unexpected fall inT 1l was also observed after about 2–3 hr of treatment time. These observations were discussed by the structural changes that took place during acid etching.

Notes: Abstract The thermal dehydration kinetics of crystalline powders of (COOH)2 · 2 H2O was examined by thermogravimetry both at constant and linearly increasing temperatures. An Avrami-Erofeyev law is found to hold with a possibility that a phase-boundary controlled reaction proceeds simultaneously. This is supported by the particle size effect on the rate constant. The activation energyE for the dehydration is estimated as around 80 kJ mol−1. It is likely that the effects of particle size and temperature onE are compensated by those on the frequency factorA.
