Notes: Summary A case of a combined anomaly of persistent hypoglossal and proatlantal intersegmental arteries, proved on arteriogram obtained by the insertion of a needle into the common trunk of both arteries, is presented. In addition, a case of anomalous occipital artery arising from the internal carotid artery associated with an intracranial aneurysm and arteriovenous malformation is presented. Based upon analysis of the persistent proatlantal intersegmental artery and the anomalous occipital artery, we conclude that both arteries have an identical embryological origin.

Notes: Summary A verified case of duplicate origin of the left vertebral artery in association with a large aneurysm arising from the aortic arch immediately distal to the left subclavian artery is presented. An anomalous left vertebral artery arises directly from the aortic arch between the left common carotid and subclavian arteries, and joins with the normal left vertebral artery in the transverse foramen of the fifth cervical vertebra.

Notes: The unreliability of diffuse-reflexion recordings obtained from oblique sections of axially extended diffuse-reflecting regions in reciprocal space is demonstrated by reference to a commonly used diffraction geometry with which the 〈100〉 anomalous `spike' X-ray reflexions of natural diamond are studied. A comparison between a sharp `spike' pattern (produced by a region of the crystal containing relatively large platelet precipitates on { 100}) and a more diffuse `spike' pattern (produced by a region containing smaller platelets) shows how the combination of spike diffuseness with fairly high obliquity in sectioning of the spike by the Ewald sphere produces marked discrepancy between apparent and predicted positions of the maxima of the more diffuse `spikes'.

Notes: Summary Dynamic behaviour of the ring subjected to distributed impulsive load is investigated. The ring is represented by the centroidal line and the problem is solved one-dimensionally. Impulsive load is assumed to be the step function with respect to time. The effects of shearing force and rotatory inertia to dynamic load factors with respect to axial force and bending moment are studied. From the results of theoretical analysis, it became evident that shearing force and rotatory inertia can not be neglected in such a problem as this, and that shear coefficient varies remarkably by the dimensions of the ring and the loading conditions.

Notes: Summary In an attempt to study the use and value in ventriculography of meglumine iocarmate (Dimer-X), previously accepted as a water soluble contrast medium safe for myelography, we have conducted animal experiments to compare Dimer-X with meglumine iothalamate (Conray 60) and meglumine diatrizoate (Angiografin). We also made clinical studies of Dimer-X. In the animal experiments, 1.5 ml and 2.0 ml of Dimer-X were injected into the ventricles of 7 dogs. We noted the apparent superiority of Dimer-X over Conray 60 and Angiografin as far as side effects were concerned, but there were no particular differences in the intensities of the ventriculograms obtained. Morphological studies of the ventricles and histological examinations of the ventricular walls 1 month after intraventricular injections of Dimer-X showed no abnormalities. In the clinical studies, ventriculography with 1–5 ml Dimer-X, performed on 17 cases, aged 8 months to 62 years, with diseases of the central nervous system, produced ventriculograms of good diagnostic value with no side effects, such as convulsions, apart from mild headache or vomiting in 4 instances.

Notes: Summary A series of 12 cases of chronic arachnoiditis in the posterior fossa is reported. The diagnosis in six patients was established at suboccipital craniectomy which brought about marked improvement in symptoms. The other six were diagnosed as having arachnoiditis in the posterior fossa from the facts that improvement in clinical symptoms was achieved by lumbar air insufflation, which has often been said to be effective in arachnoiditis, and no abnormal findings were revealed by pneumoencephalo-roulette tomography. By investigating the clinical features of these cases, we came to the following conclusions: many cases of this disease have had head trauma or chronic inflammatory disease in the past; the symptoms are apt to occur abruptly, and display repeated remission and aggravation; symptoms originating in the cranial nerves are diversified, and are often bilateral: peripheral vestibular disturbances and retrocochlear hearing losses are observed on neuro-otological examination. In the caloric test especially the patients show canal paresis (CP) on the more impaired side, but none of them appeared to be nonresponsive to the test; lumbar air insufflation is often an effective treatment for this disease; pneumoencephalo-roulette tomography is very useful for diagnosing pathological changes in the posterior fossa.

Notes: Summary A case of dural arteriovenous malformation with giant non-traumatic false aneurysm in the left middle fossa is reported. A 10-year-old female patient was admitted to our hospital with pulsating exophthalmos of the left eye, which was successfully treated by ligation of the main feeder and finally by the radical excision of the dural AVM and false aneurysm. False aneurysm of non-traumatic origin is so rare that only two cases were detected in the literature (Reinaet al., Sakakiet al.), and no previous case of false aneurysm complicated by dural AVM seems to have been reported.
