Notizen: Abstract  Nine cytoplasmic male-sterile lines and five restorer lines were used in an incomplete diallel cross to analyze seed effects, cytoplasmic effects, and maternal gene effects on nutrient quality traits of indica rice (Oryza sativa L.). The results indicated that nutrient quality traits were controlled by cytoplasmic and maternal effects as well as by seed direct effects. Maternal effects for lysine content (LC), lysine index (LI), and the ratio of lysine content to protein content (RLP) were more important than seed direct effects, while protein content (PC) and protein index (PI) were mainly affected by seed direct effects. Cytoplasmic effects accounted for 2.41–20.80% of the total genetic variation and were significant for all nutrient quality traits. Additive genetic effects were much more important than dominance effects for all of the traits studied, so that selection could be applied for these traits in early generations.

Notizen: Abstract A genetic model for modified diallel crosses is proposed for estimating variance and covariance components of cytoplasmic, maternal additive and dominance effects, as well as direct additive and dominance effects. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted to compare the efficiencies of minimum norm quadratic unbiased estimation (MINQUE) methods. For both balanced and unbalanced mating designs, MINQUE (0/1), which has 0 for all the prior covariances and 1 for all the prior variances, has similar efficiency to MINQUE(θ), which has parameter values for the prior values. Unbiased estimates of variance and covariance components and their sampling variances could be obtained with MINQUE(0/1) and jackknifing. A t-test following jackknifing is applicable to test hypotheses for zero variance and covariance components. The genetic model is robust for estimating variance and covariance components under several situations of no specific effects. A MINQUE(0/1) procedure is suggested for unbiased estimation of covariance components between two traits with equal design matrices. Methods of unbiased prediction for random genetic effects are discussed. A linear unbiased prediction (LUP) method is shown to be efficient for the genetic model. An example is given for a demonstration of estimating variance and covariance components and predicting genetic effects.

Notizen: Abstract Genetic models for quantitative traits of triploid endosperms are proposed for the analysis of direct gene effects, cytoplasmic effects, and maternal gene effects. The maternal effect is partitioned into maternal additive and dominance components. In the full genetic model, the direct effect is partitioned into direct additive and dominance components and high-order dominance component, which are the cumulative effects of three-allele interactions. If the high-order dominance effects are of no importance, a reduced genetic model can be used. Monte Carlo simulations were conducted in this study for demonstrating unbiasedness of estimated variance and covariance components from the MINQUE (0/1) procedure, which is a minimum norm quadratic unbiased estimation (MINQUE) method setting 0 for all the prior covariances and 1 for all the prior variances. Robustness of estimating variance and covariance components for the genetic models was tested by simulations. Both full and reduced genetic models are shown to be robust for estimating variance and covariance components under several situations of no specific effects. Efficiency of predicting random genetic effects for the genetic models by the MINQUE (0/1) procedure was compared with the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP). A worked example is given to illustrate the use of the reduced genetic model for kernel growth characteristics in corn (Zea mays L.).

Notizen: Abstract  Genetic effects and genotype×environment (GE) interaction effects on the cooking quality traits of indica rice (Oryza sativa L.) were analyzed based on a genetic model for quantitative traits of triploid endosperm in cereal crops. Nine cytoplasmic male-sterile lines as females and 5 restoring lines as males were used in an incomplete diallel cross over 2 years. The cooking quality traits studied were observed to be mainly controlled by genetic effects, but GE interaction effects, especially for amylose content (AC) and alkali spreading score (ASS), were also indicated. Among the genetic effects, seed direct effects and maternal effects were the main components of AC and ASS, respectively; cytoplasmic effects were the main components of gel consistency (GC). Among the GE interaction effects, AC and ASS were mainly affected by maternal interaction effects and GC by direct interaction effects. Additive effects and/or additive interaction effects were the main factors controlling the performance of rice cooking quality traits except for GC which was affected by dominant interaction effects. For AC and GC, there were seed heterosis and/or maternal heterosis. The predicated genetic effects indicated that four parents were better than the others in improving the rice cooking quality traits of the progenies. It was shown that genetic heterosis and GE interaction heterosis were important, especially for amylose content trait in early season indica rice.

Notizen: An adaptive refinement procedure using a new automatic quadrilateral element mesh generator is presented. The performance of the adaptive procedure in achieving a given accuracy with different mesh refinement strategies is compared. It is found that when using bilinear or biquadratic quadrilateral elements refinement strategies of both mesh enrichment and mesh regeneration can lead to a prescribed accuracy being achieved by the Zienkiewicz-Zhu adaptive procedure1 with the optimal rate of convergence. However, fewer mesh refinement steps are needed if the strategy of mesh regeneration is employed with the newly developed automatic quadrilateral element mesh generator2.

Notizen: A modification has been introduced to the new superconvergent patch derivative recovery technique recently developed (Zienkiewicz and Zhu, 1991). By use of a locally normalized co-ordinate system, the application of this technique can now be applied to higher-order finite-element shape functions. Numerical studies are carried out for up to 6th-order elements in one dimension and for up to quartic elements in two dimensions, and superconvergent results are obtained for all examples tested.

Notizen: An a-posteriori error estimator for finite element analysis proposed by Zienkiewicz and Zhu is analysed and shown to be effective and convergent. In addition we analyse wider classes of estimators of which the Zienkiewicz-Zhu estimator is a special case. It is shown that some of these estimators will be asymptotically exact. Numerical evidence is presented supporting the analysis.

Notizen: The Zienkiewicz-Zhu error estimator is shown to be effective in problems of plate flexure. When used in conjunction with triangular elements and an adaptive mesh generator allowing a prescribed size of elements to be developed, very fast adaptive convergence for results of specified accuracy is achieved.

Notizen: A new superconvergence recovery technique for finite element solutions is presented and discussed for one dimensional problems. By using the recovery technique a posteriori error estimators in both energy norm and maximum norm are presented for finite elements of any order. The relation between the postprocessing and residual types of energy norm error estimators has also been demonstrated.
