Notes: Summary In Periplaneta americana, SEM of abdominal nervous connectives revealed a rapid accumulation of haemocytes on the surface of the neural lamella within 24 h of selective disruption of the underlying neuroglia by ethidium bromide. After 4 days the neural lamella was effectively clear of adhering haemocytes, but showed characteristic “blisters”, which, it is postulated, represented the points of entry of the cells from the haemocoel into the underlying tissues. A notable subsequent feature was a substantial increase in the number of cells within repairing connectives. Initially, there was a marked asymmetry in their distribution, with significantly higher numbers of cells anterior to, and within, the lesion area. It seems likely that this polarity resulted from differential cell division within the connectives. The initial asymmetry disappeared after seven days. However, increased perineurial cell numbers were maintained in the lesion area after one month and were still apparent two months after selective glial disruption. There was no equivalent increase in cell numbers in the lesion zone of cultured cords or, in vivo, after injection of the DNA-scission drug, bleomycin, treatments which preclude haemocyte involvement. It is suggested that in the absence of haemocytes and with suppression of proliferation by endogenous cells, repair is achieved by redeployment or growth of adjacent, undamaged glia.

Notes: The FT-Raman vibrational spectrum of a child's deciduous exfoliated tooth has been analysed and the spectral features assigned to hydroxyapatite and protein. Comparisons made with older teeth from a Romano-British burial site (∼ 2k years) and fossilised animal teeth (∼ 1 M-70 M years) indicate that the organic protein component has disappeared with interment, whereas spectroscopic features due to the inorganic phosphatic matrix are common to all samples, modern and ancient. The application of the technique to the non-destructive analysis of archaeological samples and the recording of spectra from interred samples without detriment from fluorescent material is demonstrated. © 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Notes: The self-broadening of the Q-branch vibration-rotational lines in the CARS spectrum of HCl was studied over the pressure range 0.002-1.000 bar and the temperature range 298-1048 K. The broadening coefficients, σp, are dependent on J at 298 and 550 K but are independent of J at higher temperatures; the σp value of 1048 K is only about 25% of its value for Jmax at 298 K.

Notes: The pressure-broadening coefficients for the self-broadened S0(0), S0(1) and S0(2) pure rotational Raman lines of hydrogen and the S0(0) to S0(4) lines of deuterium were determined experimentally over the pressure range 1-100 bar and the temperature range 90-375 K. Broadening coefficients were also determined for the same lines in hydrogen and deuterium perturbed by helium, argon, oxygen, nitrogen, carbon monoxide and hydrogen chloride over the pressure range 2-100 bar, with a partial pressure of the host gas of 1 bar and a temperature of 293 K. In addition, the S0(0) pure rotational line of deuterium broadened by carbon monoxide and nitrogen was studied over the same pressure range and a temperature range of 100-293 K. The results are discussed and compared with those of previous studies in the literature.

Notes: Raman spectra of the α-, β-, γ- and smectic polymorphs of isotactic polypropylene were recorded at 298 and 16.5 K. At 298 K the spectra of the polymorphs were very similar except in the antisymmetric C—H stretching region. However, at 16 K the Raman spectra of the polymorphs show different features in several wavenumber shift regions. Comparisons are made with infrared spectra recorded at 298 and 100 K and interpretations are made on the basis of non-equivalent sites in the monoclinic unit cells.

Notes: The dissociation constants for an acetonitrile-zinc complex, (CH3CN)Zn2+, were measured in aqueous solutions containing zinc salts (40-80%, w/w) and acetonitrile by Raman spectroscopy. Quantitative measurements of the intensity of the free and complexed ν(CN) Raman bands at 2264 and 2320 cm-1, respectively, were used to determine the average enthalpy and entropy of the complex dissociation to free acetonitrile in the temperature range 293-343 K for a 70% (w/w) solution of zinc chloride (0.052 mol) in an aqueous solution containing acetonitrile (0.024 mol); δH° and δS° values of 8.4 ± 0.5 kJ mol-1, respectively, were determined.

Notes: Fourier transform (FT) Raman and infrared spectra of the outermost layer of human skin, the stratum corneum, were recorded. Assignments consistent with the FT Raman vibrations were made for the first time and compared with assignments from the FTIR spectrum. The results demonstrate that FT Raman spectroscopy holds several advantages over FTIR in studies of human skin. The molecular and conformational nature of human skin, and modifications induced by drug or chemical treatments, may be assessed by FT Raman spectroscopy.

Notes: The application of Raman spectroscopy to polymers and polymerization processes is surveyed and the advent of recent advances in instrumental techniques to polymer analysis is highlighted. Some of the problems of the more widely-used infrared spectroscopic methods, for example in microstructural analysis of polydienes and copolymers, are discussed and the advantages of the Raman spectroscopic technique are explained. The use of near-infrared excitation and Fourier-transform Raman instrumentation for process monitoring and polymer composite studies is discussed. Raman microscopic and waveguide spectroscopic studies of small samples and polymer coatings on substrates are considered. Other applications are mentioned in the areas of polymer orientation, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, conducting polymers, biopolymers and time-resolved studies.

Notes: The preparation and vibrational spectroscopic characterization of the hitherto unreported products of the copolymerization of 2,3-dimethylbutadiene and methyl methacrylate are presented. The polymers were prepared by free radical polymerization using α,α′-azobisisobutyronitrile as the initiator. Raman and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic information on the 2,3-dimethylbutadiene-methyl methacrylate copolymer is presented for a range of copolymers differing in the 2,3-dimethylbutadiene to methyl methacrylate ratio. Quantitative information of the microstructure of the polymer and copolymer using the C=C stretching vibrations is provided by Raman spectroscopy. Evidence is presented for the splitting of the C=O stretching vibration, ascribed to aggregated syndiotactic and unaggregated syndio- and isotactic poly(methyl methacrylate) at 1734 and 1724 cm-1, respectively.

Notes: The Fourier transform Raman spectra of thallus-substratum interfaces of Xanthoria parietina growing in situ on sandstone and gypsum were obtained for the first time. The presence of small amounts of calcium oxalate in thallus-substratum interfaces was confirmed spectroscopically and evidence for biodeterioration via lichen metabolic by-products was also noted. Although the oxalate determined spectroscopically was in good agreement with the results from thermogravimetric measurements there was also spectroscopic evidence for incorporation of stone particles into the lichen encrustation. Comparisons are made with Raman spectroscopic studies of the thalli of the high oxalate-producing lichen Dirina massiliensis forma sorediata. The Raman spectra Ochrolechia parella growing in association with Xanthoria parietina on maritime sandstone were also recorded and the spatial discrimination of the techniques for these high and low oxalate-producing lichens was demonstrated.
