Notes: In this paper, we use Auger electron spectroscopy and electron energy-loss spectroscopy in order to investigate the room-temperature formation of the Ti/SiO2 interface and its reactivity upon annealing. We perform anneals in the temperature range 200–900 °C for which the phenomena involved are discussed with respect to the Si oxide and Ti film thicknesses.

Notes: Background Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a new modality involving the administration of a photosensitizer, or photosensitizer precursor, followed by its activation with light to generate a therapeutic effect. 5-Aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) is a photosensitizer precursor that is transformed by cells into protoporphyrin IX (PpIX), which can in turn be activated by red light. Objectives To investigate the effect of PDT in alopecia areata (AA). Methods In six patients with extensive AA, topical ALA lotion at 5%, 10% and 20% as well as the vehicle lotion alone were applied separately to different scalp areas, followed 3 h later by exposure to red light at each treatment session. Results No significant hair growth was observed after 20 twice-weekly treatment sessions. A significant increase in erythema and pigmentation was observed for the three concentrations of ALA lotion vs. the vehicle, implying that a phototoxic PDT effect was achieved in the skin. In vivo fluorescence spectroscopy in one patient showed an increase in red PpIX fluorescence 3 h after ALA application followed by a decrease after light exposure. On fluorescence microscopy, bright red fluorescence was present in the epidermis and sebaceous glands, but not in the inflammatory infiltrate surrounding the hair follicle following ALA application. Conclusions PDT was ineffective in the treatment of AA.

Notes: We report results on the magnetic properties of nanocomposite films of the form (Co86Cr14)xPt1−x:C, which were prepared by magnetron sputtering and subsequent annealing. X-ray diffraction shows that these films consist of CoPtCr grains with the face-centered-tetragonal structure embedded in an amorphous C matrix. Magnetic properties such as coercivity (Hc), remanence ratio (S), and coercive squareness (S*) are strongly dependent on the Pt and C composition and annealing temperatures. Compared with previously reported CoPt:C films with a equiatomic Co and Pt ratio, lower exchange coupling and higher S and S* at the same C concentration were obtained. Hc values ranging from 2 to 10 kOe and S close to 1 were achieved for film thicknesses down to 10 nm. These features make CoPtCr:C nanocomposite films very attractive for next-generation high-density recording. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Ferromagnetic Co nanowires have been electrodeposited into self-assembled porous anodic alumina arrays. Due to their cylindrical shape, the nanowires exhibit perpendicular anisotropy. The coercivity, remanence ratio, and activation volumes of Co nanowires depend strongly on the length, diameter, and spacing of the nanowires. Both coercivity and thermal activation volume increase with increasing wire length, while for constant center-to-center spacing, coercivity decreases and thermal activation volume increases with increasing wire diameter. The behavior of the nanowires is explained qualitatively in terms of localized magnetization reversal. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report results on highly oriented, face-centered tetragonal ordered CoPt and FePt thin films grown nonepitaxially by directly depositing films on thermally oxidized Si substrates and subsequent annealing. By controlling the thickness, composition, and annealing conditions, and/or depositing a proper underlayer, nearly perfect (001)-oriented CoPt and FePt films can be obtained. Magnetic measurements reveal large perpendicular anisotropy for such films. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Profound secretory dysfunction can be associated with relatively modest lymphocytic infiltration of the lacrimal and salivary glands of Sjögren's syndrome (SjS) patients. SjS patients' sera contain autoantibodies to M3 muscarinic acetylcholine receptors (MAChR) that have variously been reported to have agonistic and antagonistic effects. We sought to identify consequences of chronic agonist stimulation by maintaining acinar cells from rabbit lacrimal glands for 20 h in the presence or absence of 10 µm carbachol (CCh). Exposure to CCh diminished the cells' ability to elevate cytosolic Ca2+ and secrete β-hexosaminidase in response to acute stimulation with 100 µm CCh, but it enhanced their secretory responses to phenylephrine and ionomycin. Secretory vesicles appeared normal by electron microscopy, but confocal fluorescence microscopy revealed depletion of the secretory vesicle membrane marker, rab3D, and decreased ability to recruit secretory transport vesicles in response to acute 100 µm CCh. Additionally, the apical cortical actin cytoskeleton was disrupted and diminished compared to the basal–lateral cortical network. Subcellular fractionation analyses revealed that total membrane phase protein content was increased. The contents of β-hexosaminidase and MAChR relative to total protein were not significantly altered, and MAChR abundance in the plasma membrane fraction was increased as the result of redistribution from endomembrane pools. However, relative cellular contents of the heterotrimeric guanosine triphosphate (GTP)-binding proteins, Gq and G11, were decreased. Additional biochemical changes included decreased contents of 47 kDa Gs and Gi3, protein kinase Cα and rab3D and polymeric immunoglobulin (Ig) receptors; internalization of Na,K-ATPase from the plasma membranes to endomembrane compartments and decreased content of β-hexosaminidase in the lysosomes. The observations demonstrate that chronic exposure to a MAChR agonist induces refractoriness to optimal stimulation, without causing receptor downregulation, by downregulating postreceptor-signalling mediators and effectors. The cells' secretory mechanisms for IgA and electrolytes also appear to be impaired, as does their ability to properly sort proteins to the lysosomes.
