Notizen: Abstract: Owing to rapidly changing customer needs and much shorter product life cycles, for developing a successful product it is imperative to employ more efficient and flexible approaches for product conceptualization. To meet this demand, a Web-enabled product definition and customization system (PDCS) is proposed, from a design-knowledge-handling viewpoint, in this paper. It comprises two phases, namely product definition based on the laddering technique and a novel design knowledge hierarchy, and product customization based on an integrated methodology of conjoint analysis and Kohonen association techniques. Basically, this system is a method of conducting design decision-making via customer involvement, i.e. a strategy for transforming customer preference into a specific product concept. A case study on wood golf club design is used to illustrate and validate the proposed Web-enabled PDCS.

Notizen: In recent years, new product development (NPD) has become more and more competitive and globalized. In order to succeed in the global marketplace, it is imperative to take multicultural factors into serious consideration during the stage of product concept development. Generally, the voice of customers has been treated as a starting point to downstream product definition and design metrics determination in developing new product concepts. As a result, the elicitation, representation and management of customer requirements will determine the success level of an organization's NPD efforts. Therefore, multicultural factors, also known as the ‘macro’ perspective in the business environment, are the most significant imperatives for organizations to handle, especially in the current trend of globalization. In practice, there are few holistic and promising systems for multicultural factor evaluation in customer requirements. This work aims at realizing a prototype system that combines the strengths of the laddering technique and the radial basis function neural network for customer requirements acquisition and multicultural factor evaluation. The performance of the prototype system is illustrated by using a case study on the design of a refrigerator. The results obtained from the case study are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract This paper considers the problem of approximating a given symmetric matrix by a symmetric matrix with a prescribed spectrum so that the Frobenius norm of the matrix difference is minimized. By the introduction of a variable search direction, a new convergent algorithm for solving the problem is derived, which is guaranteed to be convergent and is capable of achieving a fast rate of convergence. It is shown that the set of fixed points of the proposed algorithm coincides with the set of equilibrium points of the original double bracket equation. A numerical example is presented to demonstrate superior performance of the proposed algorithm over a standard double bracket algorithm.

Notizen: In the present investigation, four titanium (Ti) surfaces of dental implants were comparedthrough in vitro systems. The surface roughness of Ti was measured by TR240 mobile surfaceroughmeter. The Ti implants were seeded with human periodontal ligament cells (hPLDCs) andmaintained for a period of 0-7 days. The adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation of hPLDCswere observed by using Cell morphology, cell counting and Osteocalcin (OC) immunofluorescentstaining. Results suggest that surface roughness of titanium favors hPDLCs behavior and improvescell adhesion, proliferation, and differentiation

Notizen: Stimulation of bone healing through local application of growth factors from implantsmay improve the clinical outcome in fracture treatments. However, the growth factors in reconstructive application require supraphysiologic dosing and considerable expense while hampering their clinical application. Genetic modification of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) to both produce and respond to osteogenic factors may have potential for use in enhancing bone healing. In this study, MSCs were genetically modified by a recombinant adenoviral containing the gene for human bone morphogenetic protein 2 (hBMP-2). The gene-transduced cells wereincorporated with a porous beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) as a novel complex. We investigated osteogeneic potential of gene-transduced MSCs/ceramic and the ability of the complex on facilitating bone formation in a radius segmental defect of rabbits. In vitro results showed that there were apparent hBMP2 gene expression and protein synthesis in MSCs with hBMP2 stably transfection, whereas negative expression of hBMP2 in controls. Histological studies demonstrated that gene-transfected MSCs/ceramic composite appeared an ability of heterotopic osteogenesis. In the segmental bone defects, endochondrial ossification at fracture sites was found in both transfected and untransfected MSCs-ceramic composites. While the composite with hBMP2 transfection showed the earliest and the most effective healing of the segmental bone defects both radiographically and morphologically. Our results show that genetically modified MSCs/ceramicshad enhanced osteogeneic capacity relative to unmodified MSCs or only ceramic implants. This study suggests that use of cell-and gene-activated bioceramics may offer promise for molecular design of implants to induce osteogenesis and enhance bone regeneration

Notizen: Many significant improvements have been shown in mechanical properties of ceramic nanocomposites with ceramic matrix being dispersed with second sub-micro sized (or nano-sized) phase. This study designed and fabricated Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites with a raw material used for 85% alumina as matrix andSiC grits in submicro-scale as dispersion phase via a controlled pressureless sintering in air. With coarse SiC powder as bed powder, both C and SiC powder making deoxidized atmosphere, 85Al2O3/SiC nanocomposites with different SiC contents were densified by pressureless sintering at low temperature. Fracture surface investigation indicated that dense nanocomposites with small grain size were produced. General material properties and microstructure were measured and characterized. The results showed that composites sintered in deoxidized atmosphere had better mechanical properties than those sintered in flowing argon

Notizen: Macroporous biomaterials based on a-tricalcium phosphate (a-TCP) bone cement with porous structures suitable for implantation purposes were prepared in the present work. According to the reversible swelling/deswelling behavior of gelatin at a single temperature or pH, a “self-setting” method that uses gelatin granules as pore formers was developed to process the porous microstructure. By mixing gelatin powder and bone cement powder (BCP), and adding water (1% solution of NaH2PO4×HO) to form pastes which set within 15 to 30 min, this setted cement was then immerged in deionized water of temperature 25°C or 32°C for hydration. During the hydration, the pH of deionized water after cement pastes were introduced at 32°C changed from 8.6 to 7.2 which caused by the transformation of a-TCP to hydroxyapatite (HA). Meanwhile, gelatin particles will swell by water uptake to form large size spheres in cementmatrix. This swelling behavior is sensitive to the variation of pH value. After hydration for 4 day, a body containing gelatin gel spheres was obtained. Then heating the deionized water to temperature 50°C, gelatin spheres in cement matrix were solved and porous microstructure composed of larger pore sizes corresponding approximately to the average size ofthe swelling gelatin granules was obtained. The porous bodies by this technique were found to have tractable and interconnected porosity in the range of 60~84%, with typical pore sizes ranging from 100~300 microns. This new processing technique can be used in the manufacture of unsintered biomaterials

Notizen: For dental/orthopedic implants to achieve better bone apposition and bone-implantbonding, various approaches to improve titanium surfaces have been developed. Recently, afluoridated hydroxyapatite (FHA) coating on titanium (Ti) implants was made by sol–gel methodand shown to be a possible applicative bone implant. The purpose of the current study was toevaluate biological responses and biomechanical bonding strength of FHA coated Ti implants ascompared with that of the conventional Ti alloys and hydroxyapatite (HA) coated Ti implants. Invitro assays were made using human osteoblast-like cell (MG63) culture on different implants withcell attachment, morphology and differentiation evaluations. The implant plates were alsoimplanted into the proximal metaphysis of New Zealand White rabbit tibiae. After 8 and 16 weeksimplantation, mechanical and histological assessments were performed to evaluate biomechanicaland biological behavior in vivo. The results showed that the cell adhesion and cell growth rate onthe FHA and HA surface was higher than that on cp Ti surface (p〈0.01), and insignificantdifference was observed between two coated groups. Mechanical test demonstrated that the FHAimplants had a higher interface shear strength than the both controls at 8 and 16 wks, with nosignificant difference with HA-Ti. Histologically, the coated implants revealed a significantlygreater percentage of bone-implant contact when compared with the uncoated implants. Resultsdemonstrated that the new FHA surface improved cell adhesion and proliferation. The coatingexhibited a bioactive mechanical and histological behavior at bone-implant interface, suggestingthat a useful approach by combined coating processes could optimize implant surfaces for bonedeposition and early implant fixation
