Notes: Photoemission spectra were measured for the I–III–IV2 chalcopyrite semiconductors CuInSe2, CuInS2, CuInTe2, and CuGaS2 with various photon energies (32 to 140, and 1253 eV). The partial density-of-states (DOS) of Cu 3d orbital is selectively observed at the photon energies beyond 100 eV. The DOS of Cu 3d spreads from the top of valence band (VB) to 5 or 6 eV below. Three dominant peaks are labeled as A, B, and C, the structures of which are interpreted as antibonding, nonbonding, and bonding states. Reflection spectra were also measured for CuInSe2 from 2 to 100 eV at room temperature and 98.5 K. The In 4d core reflection is observed at 17.5, 18.9, 19.8, and 21.2 eV at 98.5 K; very similar characteristics are also observed at 5.28, 6.21, 7.35, and 8.67 eV. These contributions are due to the Cu 3d nonbonding electrons. Photoemission and reflection experiments thus confirm conclusively the existence of nonbonding Cu 3d states in I–III–VI2 chalcopyrites. This result proves the theoretical model that attributes the upper VB to the antibonding state, in contrast with the bonding state of sp3-hybridized semiconductors.

Notes: Cl−-ATPase in the CNS is a candidate for an outwardly directed neuronal Cl− transporter requiring phosphatidylinositol-4-phosphate (PI4P) for its optimal activity. To test its pathophysiological changes in a phosphatidylinositol (PI) metabolism disorder, the effects of neurotoxic factors in Alzheimer's disease (AD), amyloid β proteins (Aβs), on the Cl−-ATPase activity were examined using primary cultured rat hippocampal neurons. Amyloid β proteins (1–40, 1–42 and 25–35) concentration-dependently (1–100 nm) and time-dependently (from 1 h to 6 day) decreased Cl−-ATPase activity and elevated intracellular Cl− concentrations ([Cl−]i), Aβ25–35 being the most potent. Addition of inositol or 8-Br-cyclic GMP completely reversed these Aβ-induced changes. The recoveries in enzyme activity were attenuated by an inhibitor of PI 4-kinase, 10 µm wortmannin or 20 µm quercetin, but not by a PI 3-kinase inhibitor, 50 nm wortmannin or 10 µm LY294002. The PI, PIP and PIP2 levels of the plasma membrane-rich fraction were lower in the Aβ-treated cells as compared with each control. In the Aβ-exposed culture, but not in control, stimulation by 10 µm glutamate for 10 min significantly increased fragmentation of DNA and decreased cell viability. Addition of inositol or 8-Br-cyclic GMP prevented the effect of Aβ-treatment on the neurotoxicity of glutamate. Thus, Aβs reduce neuronal Cl−-ATPase activity, resulting in an increase in [Cl−]i probably by lowering PI4P levels, and this may reflect a pre-apoptotic condition in early pathophysiological profiles of AD.

Notes: Optical absorption spectra of CuInSe2 single crystals were measured for the samples with −0.150≤x≤0.053, where x represents a degree of nonstoichiometry in the formula Cu1−xIn1+xSe2. The Urbach's tail was observed for all samples between 90 K and room temperature. The Urbach's energy, which represents an arbitrary intensity of exciton–phonon interaction, was almost constant for the Cu-rich samples (x〈0), while it increased with increasing In composition for the In-rich ones (x(approximately-greater-than)0). Such an increase of the Urbach's energy was explained to be due to enhanced electronic distortion caused by the compositional deviation from stoichiometry in terms of simultaneous influence of electron–phonon interaction and structural disorder. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: High optical-quality polycrystalline and epitaxial CuInSe2 thin films were grown by a simultaneous-feeding or alternate-feeding physical vapor deposition method. The existence of the liquid-phase Cu2−xSe during the growth was confirmed in terms of meltback of the substrate. The grown films exhibited predominant near-band-edge photoluminescence peaks from 2 K up to room temperature. A clear free exciton absorption peak was observed and its full width at half maximum decreased with decreasing repetition periods of the metal feeding cycle. This result demonstrates the importance of stabilized CuInSe2 solute and Cu2−xSe solvent concentrations to obtain improved film quality and homogeneity. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: The thermal expansion of the compound semiconductors CdIn2S4 and CdInGaS4 has been investigated on single crystals between 120 and 570 K. At high temperatures the anharmonic effects in lattice vibrations of the (parallel)c-axis direction in CdInGaS4 is similar to that in the ⊥c-axis direction, and that in CdIn2S4 is similar to that in CdInGaS4 in spite of the diverse crystal structures. The characteristic temperature (corresponding to Debye temperatures) for CdIn2S4 is 175±10 K, and for CdInGaS4 it is 200±10 K ((parallel)c axis) and 161±10 K (⊥c axis), respectively.

Notes: The optical absorption coefficients in Bi12SiO20 have been measured precisely at various hydrostatic pressures up to 40 kbar at room temperature. The interband gap for the indirect allowed transition was found to have a pressure coefficient (∂Eg/∂P)T of −1.20×10−6 eV/bar. Using the result of the pressure coefficient, it was indicated that the electron-phonon interaction was dominant in the temperature dependence of the indirect energy gap in Bi12SiO20.

Notes: The optical-absorption spectra in the semiconductor CdInGaS4 have been measured precisely at various hydrostatic pressures up to 20 kbar, and analyzed in the region below the fundamental absorption edges. It can be seen that the absorption coefficients plotted semilogarithmically vary linearly with photon energy below the fundamental absorption edges at each hydrostatic pressure. The steepness of the absorption edge is proportional to the inverse of hydrostatic pressure.

It can be seen that the optical-absorption coefficients plotted semilogarithmically vary linearly with photon energy below the fundamental absorption edges at each hydrostatic pressure. The steepness of the absorption edge decreases with increasing pressure up to 10 kbar and then it shows constant value. The broad shoulders below 3.1-eV photon energy are shown, and the optical-absorption coefficients in those regions increase with increasing pressure up to 10 kbar.
