Notes: The crystallographic orientation distribution, and its change as a function of creepdeformation in Ni-based single crystal superalloys have been investigated by X-ray diffractometry. The distribution of the crystallographic orientation has significantly broadened by creepdeformations. Directional broadening of the distribution agrees with creep dislocations having theburgers vector of 1/2〈101〉. High temperature creep strain of superalloys can be estimated by anon-destractive test where the width of rocking curve of a diffraction peak is measured

Notes: Atomic Oxygen (AO) is a main constituent of the atmosphere on low earth orbit where theInternational Space Station (ISS) goes around, and is also known as the matter which deterioratemany kinds of polymers. However, the strength properties of polymers suffered from AO have notbeen fully clarified. To investigate this problem, we irradiated AO to Poly-Ether-Ether-Keton(PEEK) films under three kinds of tensile stresses. Based on the analysis of irradiated samples, theeffects of AO fluence (total amount of AO per unit area) and tensile stresses on damage propertieswere discussed with regard to reaction efficiency Re, surface morph, and tensile strength properties. As a result, the following were obtained: (1) Test piece surfaces exhibited considerable damagecovered by conical pits of 1μm sizes with a few μm depths. (2) Test piece thickness of irradiatedarea decreased almost proportionally to AO fluence. (3) Re and thickness reduction wasaccelerated by tensile stress. (4) Strength properties after AO irradiation were almost same asthose of a pristine sample considering the decrease of specimen thickness

Notes: In this study, Fe-2.0Si-4.6C (mass%) gray cast iron disk specimens with three differentmatrix phases were coated with MoS2 using pressure spraying, and the friction and wear propertiesof the specimens were investigated against AISI52100 steel and polytetrafluoroethylene balls underthe lubrication of oil using an Optimol SRV friction tester. When AISI52100 steel balls were usedas the paired material, all of the MoS2-coated gray cast iron specimens showed lower frictioncoefficients and higher wear resistance than the non-coated disk specimens. On the other hand,MoS2-coated gray cast iron specimens exhibited higher friction coefficients than non-coated diskspecimens for the most part, when polytetrafluoroethylene balls were used as the paired material

Notes: Abstract: The aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate the changes in the levels of biochemical markers and ultrasound indices of os calcis across the menopausal transition. One hundred and ten healthy women (age 35–59 years at the 1992 baseline) participated in this 4-year population-based longitudinal study. Serum intact osteocalcin (IOC), urinary pyridinoline (Pyr), urinary deoxypyridinoline (Dpyr) and ultrasound indices were measured at baseline and after 4 years. The percentage changes in biochemical markers (%DIOC, %DPyr and %DDpyr) and the percentage decreases in the ultrasound indices (%DSOS, %DBUA and %DStiffness) were calculated. The values of %DIOC and %DDpyr in the perimenopausal subgroup (−4 to−3 years since menopause) and the values of %DSOS and %DStiffness in the perimenopausal subgroup (−2 to 0 years since menopause) were significantly higher than those in other groups. Pyr was significantly correlated with %DSOS (r=−0.467, p〈0.01) and %DStiffness (r = −0.330, p〈0.05) and Dpyr was significantly correlated with %DSOS (r=−0.390, p〈0.05), %DBUA (r=−0.353, p〈0.05) and %DStiffness (r = −0.454, p〈0.05), while %DIOC was significantly correlated with %DSOS (r=−0.278, p〈0.05), %DBUA (r=−0.369, p〈0.01) and %DStiffness (r = −0.383, p〈0.01) in the peri- and postmenopausal groups. These results indicate that the increase in bone turnover occurs 4 years before menopause. However, the correlations between biochemical markers and ultrasound indices were too low to allow prediction of bone change in the individual patient.

Notes: Abstract The population fluctuation pattern of light-attracted beetles was studied from August 1992 to September 1998 (for 73 months) using ultraviolet light-traps set at three vertical levels in a tropical lowland dipterocarp forest in Sarawak, Malaysia. During our study, a general flowering occurred from April to July in 1996, and flowering on a small scale in 1997 and 1998. We analyzed the data for eight scarabaeid and six meloid species, some of which were anthophilous species. Various fluctuation patterns were observed among the beetle species in aspects of both seasonality and correlation with the supraannual phenological pattern. Three large chafer species (Scarabaeidae, Melolonthini) showed a clear seasonal fluctuation pattern with a peak once from March to May every year, the peak monthly catch greatly fluctuating annually. Other scarabaeid beetles did not show such a clear seasonal population pattern and hardly fluctuated annually. Populations of an anthophilous scarabaeid species, Parastasia bimaculata, a specific pollinator of Homalomena propinqua (Araceae), hardly fluctuated, probably because of its response to the constant flowering of its floral hosts. Monthly catches of an anthophilous scarabaeid, Anomala sp., and meloid beetles showed clear supraannual patterns in response to the general flowering and were significantly correlated with the flowering intensity with or without a lag of a month. The fluctuation pattern of meloids suggests a supraannual population fluctuation pattern of their hosts, i.e., megachilid/anthophorid bees.

Notes: Abstract Numerical aberrations of chromosomes 7 and 9 of exfoliated cells from the urinary tract were examined using fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH). To minimize contamination with inflammatory, squamous and normal transitional cells all samples were stained using Giemsa's solution and clusters of transitional cells were selected for FISH analysis. Samples collected from 21 patients who had cystoscopic monitoring for bladder cancer were used in this study. Cystoscopy was positive in seven patients and five biopsy-proven transitional cell carcinomas were identified. Among the patients with cancer recurrence, numerical chromosomal aberrations were detected in four cases (sensitivity: 80%) and positive cytology in two cases. This preliminary pilot study shows FISH can be a useful tool for the detection of recurrence during a follow up of bladder cancer.

Notes: Abstract The diagnosis of an isolated fracture of the greater trochanter can be done on routine radiographs, but this may not be the whole story. We evaluated fractures of the greater trochanter of the femur by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MR images were obtained within 5 days of the time of clinical presentation. Coronal images were performed on T1- and T2-weighted spin-echo images. Eight elderly patients who were diagnosed as having a greater trochanter fracture on standard radiographs underwent MRI. Three were men aged 62–76 (mean 63.4) years, and five were women aged 80–101 (mean 88.6) years. MRI showed that in seven of the eight cases, the fracture line was observed leading from the greater trochanter towards other trochanter regions. In only one case was the fracture limited to the greater trochanter and corresponded to the line observed on the standard radiographs. We suggest that in cases of greater trochanter fracture with somewhat severe symptoms, MRI should be performed in order to discover the appropriate diagnosis and treatment.

Notes: It is well known that the ultra grain refinement can be achieved by sever cold rolling, followedby reversion treatment in metastable austenitic stainless steel plate. In this study, the cold rolling wasreplaced by cold drawing. This procedure was applied to a metastable austenitic steel (Fe-16Cr-10Nialloy) thin wire, and then the microstructure development during cold drawing and annealing wasinvestigated. The austenite phase transformed to martensite during the drawing. Vickers hardness of thewire markedly increased with increasing the drawing strain. When the drawing strain reached about 4.5,the wire exhibited martensite single structure and had high hardness of Hv4.4GPa. Annealing of theheavily drawn wire at around 900K for 0.6ks leads to the formation of reversed austenite with thediffusional reversion mechanism. As a result, ultra fine-grained austenitic single structure with the grainsize of about 0.6μm was obtained. It was also found that the wire has an excellent combination of astrength and ductility

Notes: Summary ¶ The causes of recurrence after microvascular decompression for trigeminal neuralgia and the results of re-operations were studied in 6 cases. Eighty-two patients with trigeminal neuralgia were operated on through microvascular decompression using the technique of interposing Teflon felt between the offending artery and the pons and/or nerve. Recurrence occurred in 14 cases (17.1%) and re-operations were carried out in 6 severe cases at which time the sling retraction technique was used. At the second operation, the adhesion of the interposed Teflon felt was found at the trigeminal nerve in all cases and the adhesions were the main cause of recurrence. The Teflon felt was dissected from the nerve, and the sling of the Teflon felt adhering to the offending arteries was fixed to the tentorium in order to transpose the arteries and avoid re-adhesion. All cases resulted in an excellent relief from pain and experienced no pain for at least 2 years. The intra-operative findings of our cases indicated that the microvascular decompression using the interposing technique may result in adhesion of the prosthesis to the nerve and thus eventually lead to recurrence. Our surgical experience also suggests that such recurrent cases should be re-operated on using the sling retraction technique instead of the interposing technique, even for the first microvascular decompression procedure.

Notes: The current-carrying properties beyond a critical current determined by a voltage criterionfor Ag-sheathed Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Ag/Bi2212) superconductors are examined at 10 K and 20 K inmagnetic fields. We prepared the in-field heat-treated Ag/Bi2212 wires, in order to obtain themagnetic field alignment microstructure for Ag/Bi2212. The electric field and current density (E-J)properties were evaluated for Ag/Bi2212 wires with and without the in-field heat-treatment. Wefound that the E-J properties for the in-field heat-treated Ag/Bi2212 wires differ from those for theout-of-field heat-treated ones, and are analogous to the E-J dependence for Bi-system hightemperature superconductors with the sintered-like grain morphology
