    Notes: Abstract The effects of soil moisture changes on bacteria, fungi, protozoa, and nematodes and changes in oxygen consumption were studied in a field experiment. In one plot the soil was drip-irrigated daily for 10 days, while an adjacent plot experienced one rainfall and was then allowed to dry out. Oxygen consumption was the parameter measured which responded most rapidly to changes in soil moisture content. Lengths of fluorescein diacetate-active hyphae paralleled oxygen consumption in both plots. Total hyphal length was not affected by one rainfall but increased from 700 mg−1 dry weight soil to more than 1,600 m in less than 10 days in the irrigated plot. In the rain plot, bacterial numbers doubled within 3 days and declined during the following period of drought. In the irrigated plot, numbers increased by 50% and then remained constant over the duration of the study. Only small changes in protozoan numbers were observed, with the exception of the last sampling date in the irrigated plot when large numbers of naked amoebae were recorded 2 days after a large natural rainfall. Nematode numbers, especially obligate root feeders, increased in both treatments. The increases were caused by decoiling rather than growth. The results indicate that fungal respiration was dominating, while bacteria, lacking a suitable source of energy, were less active, except for the first days.

    Notes: Abstract The textural, mineralogical, compositional and paleontological characteristics of an iron-cemented allochthonous sediment slab recovered from a zone of slumping between water depths of 2,100 and 2,350 m on the lower continental slope off Cape Hatteras are summarized. Results support interpretation of the sediment slab as the oxidized equivalent of pyrite-cemented Pleistocene to Recent sediment, an uncommon form of lithification in deep sea sediments. We propose that exposure of such slumped sediment slabs to seawater has produced an alteration sequence from pyrite-cement to iron oxide-cement. These observations extend the range of pyrite-cemented sediment initially reported from water depths between 4,770 and 4,950 m on the lower continental rise off Cape Hatteras.

    Notes: Summary The amounts of C and N that pass through the nematode biomass in four cropping systems, barley without and with N fertilization, grass ley and lucerne, has been estimated. The nematodes were sampled at the field site of a Swedish integrated research project “Ecology of Arable Land: The Role of Organisms in Nitrogen Cycling”. The nematode biomass was lower (200 mg dry weight m−2) in the annual (barley) than in the perennial (grass and lucerne, 350 mg dry weight m−2) crops. For respiration, the nematodes used 4–71 O2m−2 year−1 corresponding to C liberation of 1.3%–2.0% of the carbon input to the soil. A higher relative contribution by bacterial-feeding nematodes to the C and N fluxes and a higher turnover rate of the nematode biomass is an indication of more rapid nutrient circulation in the annual than in the perennial cropping systems.

    Notes: Summary Earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris L.) were cultured in the laboratory and fed on lucerne (Medicago sativa L.). Denitrification rates in the surface casts and the surrounding soil were quantified using C2H2-inhibition of nitrous oxide reductase. The investigation also included determination of the N2O-formation by nitrification as well as CO2-formation as a measure of respiration. The denitrification rates of wet earthworm casts were found to be significantly higher than those occurring in wet samples from the soil. The low N2O-formation observed seemed to be due to denitrification. Respiration was higher in casts, indicating higher oxygen demand which resulted in more anaerobic conditions. The energy supply was probably better in casts compared with the surrounding soil.

Der periphere Widerstand sinkt um 40% ab. —Die Herzfrequenz steigt um 9%, das Schlagvolumen von 44 ml/m2 auf 50 ml/m2 = 14%. Die Herzarbeit bleibt etwa konstant. dp/dt max nimmt um 34% gegenüber dem Ausgangswert zu. Nach 4 min sind die Ausgangswerte wieder erreicht. Lediglich die Frequenz ist unter den Ausgangswert erniedrigt, dementsprechend ist das Schlagvolumen vergrößert.
    Notes: Summary The effect of prenylamine (0.43 mg/kg body weight) on cardiac output, heart rate, blood pressure, left ventricular work, peripheral resistance and dp/dt was tested in 15 healthy subjects. — Approximately about 60 sec after the injection the following changes have been observed: — 1. Decrease of systolic and diastolic blood pressure by 10 resp. 12%, peripheral resistance by 40%. —2. Increase of cardiac output by 20%, heart rate by 9%, stroke volume by 14%, dp/dt max. by 34%. Left ventricular work was found unchanged. — These effects were reversible within 4 min, with exception of heart rate (slight decrease) and stroke volume (slight increase).

    Notes: Summary The effects of three gastric antisecretory drugs on the pharmacokinetics of ethanol have been studied in a randomized crossover experiment. Male medical students (n=12) took ethanol 0.8 g/kg body weight at 08.00 h after an overnight fast. On seven successive days before drinking ethanol they were given omeprazole 20 mg, cimetidine 800 mg, ranitidine 300 mg, or no drug, with a period of at least 7 days between treatments. The peak blood ethanol concentration of 21.9 to 22.8 mmol·l−1 occurred at 64 to 70 min after the end of drinking. The rate of disappearance of ethanol from the blood ranged from 3.0 to 3.3 mmol·l−1·h−1 and the rate of removal from the whole body ranged from 8.0 to 8.5 g·h−1. The apparent volume of distribution of ethanol was almost the same for all four treatments: mean 0.68 l·kg−1, corresponding to a mean total body water of 441 (59% body weight). Mean areas under the concentration-time profiles of ethanol ranged from 83 to 87 mmol·l−1·h for the four treatments. It is concluded that omeprazole, cimetidine and ranitidine do not alter the kinetics of a moderate dose of ethanol.
