    Notes: Abstract H-Y antigen is defined as a male histocompatibility antigen that causes rejection of male skin grafts by female recipients of the same inbred strain of rodents. Male-specific, or H-Y antigen(s), are also detected by cytotoxic T cells and antibodies. H-Y antigen appears to be an integral part of the membrane of most male cells. In addition, H-Y antibodies detect a soluble form of H-Y that is secreted by the testis. The gene (Smcy/SMCY) coding for H-Y antigen detected by T cells has been cloned. It is expressed ubiquitously in male mice and humans, and encodes an epitope that triggers a specific T-cell response in vitro. Additional epitopes coded for by different Y-chromosomal genes are probably required in vivo for the rejection of male grafts by female hosts. The molecular nature of H-Y antigen detected by antibodies on most male cells is not yet known. Testis-secreted, soluble H-Y antigen, however, was found to be identical to Müllerian-inhibiting substance (MIS). MIS cross-reacts with H-Y antibodies and identical findings were obtained for soluble H-Y antigen and MIS, i.e., secretion by testicular Sertoli and, to a lesser degree, ovarian cells, binding to a gonad-specific receptor, induction of gonadal sex reversal in vitro and, in cattle, in vivo. H-Y antisera also detect a molecule or molecules associated with the heterogametic sex in nonmammalian vertebrates. Molecular data on this antigen or antigens are not yet available.

    Notes: Summary Three cases of Y chromosomal aberrations were studied using a panel of Y-specific DNA sequences from both Yp and euchromatic Yq. One case was a phenotypic male fetus with a Y-derived marker chromosome. The short arm of this chromosome was intact, but most of its long arm was missing. The second case had a 46,Xyq- karyotype with portions of euchromatic Yq, including the spermatogenesis region, missing. The third case was a phenotypic female with a 46,XXp+ karyotype. The extra material on the Xp+ chromosome was derived from the heterochromatic, and part of the euchromatic, portion of Yq. Application of X-specific DNA sequences demonstrated that the distal portion of the short arm of the translocation X chromosome was deleted (Xpter—p22.3). The three examples demonstrate the importance of diagnostic DNA analysis in cases of marker chromosomes, and X and Y chromosomal aberrations. In addition, the findings in the patients facilitate further deletion mapping of euchromatic Yq.

    Notes: Abstract Replication studies on prophasic human Y chromosomes reveal 4 early replicating segments in the euchromatic portion. The distal segment of Yp replicates first. After replication of the euchromatic part is almost finished 3 to 5 segments start replication in the heterochromatic portion of Yq. These segments exhibit considerable intraindividual variation with respect to the origin of onset of replication. While the location of these bands — once they are differentiated — is fixed within one individual, the number of these bands varies interindividually.

    Notes: Numerical simulations show that the diagonal oscillation, previously observed in Bénard convection experiments in Hele–Shaw slots, arises from an internal layer instability; an internal stagnation point is essential to the oscillation mechanism. This is contrasted with the more classical oscillation arising from a convected boundary-layer instability. From a dynamical systems viewpoint, the diagonal oscillation occurs in its purest form as a simultaneous temporal and spatial symmetry breaking (a Takens–Bogdanov bifurcation). Continuation methods yield the relevant bifurcation diagrams and show that the existence of the diagonal oscillation is robust with respect to modifications of the boundary conditions.

    Notes: Agriculture has evolved independently in three insect orders: once in ants, once in termites, and seven times in ambrosia beetles. Although these insect farmers are in some ways quite different from each other, in many more ways they are remarkably similar, suggesting convergent evolution. All propagate their cultivars as clonal monocultures within their nests and, in most cases, clonally across many farmer generations as well. Long-term clonal monoculture presents special problems for disease control, but insect farmers have evolved a combination of strategies to manage crop diseases: They (a) sequester their gardens from the environment; (b) monitor gardens intensively, controlling pathogens early in disease outbreaks; (c) occasionally access population-level reservoirs of genetically variable cultivars, even while propagating clonal monocultures across many farmer generations; and (d) manage, in addition to the primary cultivars, an array of "auxiliary" microbes providing disease suppression and other services. Rather than growing a single cultivar solely for nutrition, insect farmers appear to cultivate, and possibly "artificially select" for, integrated crop-microbe consortia. Indeed, crop domestication in the context of coevolving and codomesticated microbial consortia may explain the 50-million year old agricultural success of insect farmers.

Verschärft ist dieser Sachverhalt noch dadurch, daß Pauls speziell im I Kor offen zugeben kann, kein Jesuswort zur Regelung von Gemeindeverhält-nissen zu besitzen (7, 12. 25. 40).
