    Notes: Abstract Two rare cases of small intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma with marked hypervascularity are reported. Dynamic computed tomographic and magnetic resonance images of the two cases revealed strong enhancement of the whole tumor on the early phase and prolonged enhancement on the late and delayed phases. In both cases, the tumors turned out to be well-differentiated tubular cholangiocarcinoma that contained a large number of tumor cells and few interstitial fibrous tissues. These results suggest that some intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma should be differentiated from other hypervascular hepatic tumors, especially hepatocelluar carcinoma, and that prolonged enhancement of the tumor on late and delayed phases of dynamic images could be of diagnostic value.

    Notes: Abstract To assess the ability of gadolinium enhancement to suppress the overlapping vessel signals that diminish the image quality of magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography (MRCP), we obtained MRCP before and after intravenous injection of gadolinium. Signal intensity ratio of the common bile duct to the main pancreatic duct was significantly improved after the injection of contrast media. The image quality of the postcontrast MRCP was better than that of the precontrast one.

    Notes: Abstract By means of scanning and transmission electron microscopy, the influence of the red tide species Chattonella antiqua was examined with respect to the surface ultrastructures of chloride cells of the yellowtail Seriola quinqueradiata. Conspicuous ultrastructural alterations occurred on the apical surface of these cells. The majority of chloride cells in the control gills showed an apical surface with numerous cellular extensions, while more than half the chloride cells affected by red tide organisms exhibited an apical surface with fewer and smaller extensions, a wrinkled apical surface, or a protruded apical surface. These ultrastructural alterations of chloride cell surface may be due to the partial disturbance of salinity by C. antiqua, and reflect the changes of the ion-transport function in yellowtail gills exposed to red tide water.

    Notes: Abstract. We reviewed the MR images and pathologic findings of five cases of primary vaginal neoplasms of non-squamous origin. Histologic types consisted one case each of adenocarcinoma, adenosarcoma, melanoma, lymphoma, and neurilemoma. Magnetic resonance imaging was found useful for evaluating the type and the extension of vaginal tumors.

    Notes: Summary Depth analysis was performed on the field potential evoked by stimulation of the infraorbital nerve in the trigeminal spinal nucleus caudalis and the subjacent lateral reticular formation of cats. It was shown by dye marking of the recording positions that each subnucleus of the nucleus caudalis (subnucleus marginalis, gelatinosus and magnocellularis) and the reticular formation could be differentiated from one another by the characteristics of the peripherally evoked field potentials. Responses of neurons were extracellularly recorded in the subnuclei gelatinosus and magnocellularis of the nucleus caudalis and in the reticular formation to stimulation of the trigeminal sensory branches (the frontal, infraorbital and lingual nerves), the nucleus ventralis posteromedialis of the thalamus and the cerebral cortex. The properties of the neurons were studied in relation to their thresholds, latencies, receptive fields (sensory branches effective for spike generation) and frequency-following capacities. These responses were then compared with properties of the PAD induced in the fibers terminating in the nucleus caudalis by similar peripheral and central stimulation. It was found that the neurons in the subnucleus magnocellularis were the most likely candidates for the interneurons mediating the peripherally evoked disynaptic PAD in the trigeminal nerve fibers terminating in the nucleus caudalis.

    Notes: Summary Intra-axonal recordings were made from trigeminal primary afferent fibers in the trigeminal spinal nuclei oralis and caudalis of cats. Primary afferent depolarization (PAD) was evoked in these afferents by stimulation of the trigeminal peripheral sensory branches (the frontal, infraorbital and lingual nerves), the cerebral cortex and the trigeminal spinal nucleus caudalis. The properties of the PAD, including the threshold, latency, receptive field (sensory branches effective for PAD induction) and frequency-following capacity, were studied with the following results: 1. Stimulation of all the peripheral branches tested as well as the cerebral cortex could evoke PAD in the same single fiber. The latency of the PAD evoked by stimulation of the nerve in which the fiber being recorded from was included was generally shorter than that evoked by other branches. The PAD evoked by peripheral nerve stimulation was assumed to be disynaptic in some cases. 2. The peripherally evoked PAD was chiefly attributable to low threshold afferents in the stimulated sensory branches of the trigeminal nerve. 3. The peripherally evoked PAD could follow stimulation at up to 30/sec, though the amplitude was reduced. 4. Stimulation of the nucleus caudalis could evoke PAD with disynaptic latency in the majority of the fibers terminating in the same nucleus, whereas it evoked PAD with mainly polysynaptic latency in the fibers terminating in the nucleus oralis. The results are discussed in relation to the neuronal circuitry responsible for induction of the trigeminal PAD.

    Notes: Surface hardening treatment of titanium materials in use of CO gas was studied includinginvestigation of post heat treatment under vacuum. C.P. titanium, α+β type SP-700 alloy withTi-4.5%Al-3%V-2%Mo-2%Fe and β type alloy with Ti-15%Mo-5%Zr-3%Al were used. Surface hardeningwas conducted by heating these materials at 1073K for 21.6ks in Ar-5%CO gas. Subsequently, specimenssubjected to surface hardening were heated at 1073k for various time periods under vacuum. While themaximum surface hardness value was the largest in C.P. titanium and the least in SP-700 alloy, hardeninglayer thickness was the thickest in β type alloy and the thinnest in C.P. titanium. Surface hardening in C.P.titanium was brought about by solid solution hardening due to oxygen and carbon. Enrichment of theseelements in the surface layer of both titanium alloys caused continuous variations of the microstructure suchas β to α+β, or their volume fractions in the surface hardening layer. Post heat treatment at 1073K increasedthe maximum surface hardness and hardening layer thickness with an extension of the heating time in C.P.titanium, but the surface maximum hardness decreased continuously in β type titanium alloy. Post heattreatment could remove the thin oxide layer formed by surface hardening treatment
