Notes: The alloying behavior of copper atoms into gold clusters at temperatures lower than 300 K was examined using a 200 kV transmission electron microscope equipped with a double source evaporator in the specimen chamber. Isolated gold clusters of about 4 nm in mean diameter were prepared on a supporting film and were cooled down to 245, 215, 165, or 125 K. Copper atoms were then deposited onto the same film. Upon the deposition of copper, the gold clusters quickly changed into completely or partially alloyed clusters, depending upon the substrate temperature. The copper diffusivity estimated from such spontaneous alloying was many orders of magnitude faster than that in bulk gold. A possible mechanism behind the spontaneous alloying is discussed.

Notes: Alloying behavior of gold atoms into copper clusters has been studied using a 200 kV transmission electron microscope (TEM) equipped with a double source evaporator in the specimen chamber. Isolated copper clusters of approximately 4 nm in diameter were first prepared on a supporting film of amorphous carbon, and then gold atoms were deposited onto the same film kept at room temperature. Upon the deposition of gold, the copper clusters quickly changed into homogeneously mixed Cu-Au alloy clusters. The gold diffusivities in the clusters estimated from the experimental results are at least 19 orders of magnitude faster than those in the bulk copper.

Notes: To study performance and reproducibility of photodiodes (PDs) on Si in the long-wavelength region, InAlAs/InGaAs metal-semiconductor-metal PDs were fabricated on high-quality heteroepitaxial InP layers on Si substrates. A dark current of 0.5–2×10−8 A and a responsivity of 0.05–0.15 A/W were reproducibly obtained, at least at one of the ±5 V bias voltages. These dark currents and responsivity are similar to those of PDs with the same structure fabricated on InP substrates. The PDs on Si have pulse responses with full widths at half-maximum of 150–600 ps.

Notes: Room-temperature cw operation of an InGaAs/InGaAsP multiple quantum well (MQW) laser diode on a Si substrate is reported. The MQW laser emits at a 1.54 μm wavelength and exhibits no degradation after over 2000 h of operation. Employing a hybrid organometallic vapor phase epitaxy/vapor mixing epitaxy method and a layer structure for improving crystalline quality, high-quality MQW layers are obtained. A stable longitudinal mode spectrum demonstrates the effectiveness of the MQW active layer.

Notes: The anti-proliferative effects of interferon gamma (IFN-γ) and CPT-11, a new derivative of camptothecin, both singly and in combination, on two human endometrial carcinoma cell lines, HHUA and ISHIKAWA, were examined in vitro. The HHUA cells were responsive dose-dependently to IFN-γ, while the ISHIKAWA cells were unresponsive to IFN-γ. Both cell lines were responsive dose-dependently to CPT-11. In both cell lines, IFN-γ at clinically achievable concentrations (10 and 100 U ml−1 enhanced the anti-proliferative activity of CPT-11 in the range of concentrations where CPT-11 showed more than 10% cell growth inhibition. Sequential treatment with CPT-11 followed by incubation with IFN-γ resulted in significant cell growth inhibition, but not vice versa. Flow cytometric studies indicated that the combined anti-proliferative effect did not correlate with cytokinetic alterations. Treatment with IFN-γ did not change the extractable topoisomerase I activity of the HHUA and ISHIKAWA cells. The combination therapy of IFN-γ and CPT-11 could provide a new approach against endometrial cancer.

Notes: Summary Human normal dura mater containing arachnoid villi were examined for their expression of glutathione S-transferase placental type (GST-π), a detoxifying enzyme, using an immunohistochemical method. All of the arachnoid villi and arachnoid cells in five normal cases were found to have expression of GST-π, although no positive reaction for the enzyme was present in other tissues of the dura mater. The results show a possible role for arachnoid tissues in protecting human brain from hazardous xenobiotics in the cerebrospinal fluid. Twenty-six meningiomas were also examined for expression of the enzyme. Tissues of meningotheliomatous meningiomas were always positive for expression of the enzyme. Transitional meningiomas also showed the expression in their meningotheliomatous components. No staining reaction of GST-π was recognized in fibroblastic meningiomas except for two cases with a tendency to meningotheliomatous differentiation. The findings suggest a functional similarity between the arachnoid tissues and meningotheliomatous components of meningiomas.

Notes: Abstract We report serial neuroradiological studies in a patient with focal cerebritis in the head of the left caudate nucleus. On the day after the onset of symptoms, CT showed an ill-defined low density lesion. The lack of contrast enhancement appeared to be the most important finding for differentiating focal cerebritis from an encapsulated brain abscess or a tumour. MRI two days later revealed the centre of the lesion to be of slightly low intensity on T1-weighted inversion recovery (IR) images and very low intensity on T2-weighted spin echo images, which appeared to correspond to the early cerebritis stage of experimentally induced cerebritis and brain abscess. Ten days after the onset of symptoms, CT revealed a thin ring of enhancement in the head of the caudate nucleus, and a similar small ring was seen in the hypothalamus 16 days after the onset, corresponding to the late cerebritis stage. MRI nine days later revealed ill-defined high signal lesions within the involved area on the T1-weighted IR images. To our knowledge, this is the first published MRI documentation of the early cerebritis stage developing into an encapsulated brain abscess. The mechanisms underlying of these radiographic changes are discussed.

Notes: Abstract An autopsy case of an 83-year-old Japanese woman with pancreatic cancer with significantly elevated serum α-fetoprotein levels is reported. The pancreatic tumor was a mucinous cystadeno-carcinoma with multiple metastasis to the liver. The immunohistochemistry for α-fetoprotein revealed positive reactivity in the cytoplasm of cancer cells in the primary and liver metastatic lesions. The current case is the first reported in which mucinous cystadenocarcinoma of the pancreas produced α-fetoprotein.
