Notes: The ground and excited states of Ni(CO)4 are studied using the symmetry adapted cluster (SAC)/SAC-configuration interaction (SAC-CI) method. The experimental absorption spectrum is well reproduced by the present calculations. All the peaks observed in the range of 200∼350 nm are assigned to the electronic allowed 1T2 excited states. The third peak is assigned to the 3 1T2 and 4 1T2 states. Next, the potential energy curves of the ground and the low-lying excited states are calculated by the same method and utilized to clarify the mechanism of the photofragmentation reaction of Ni(CO)4 by a XeCl laser (308 nm). A reaction pathway involving several excited states is proposed for the photofragmentation reaction into the excited Ni(CO)3 and CO. The calculated emission energy from the former agrees well with the observed luminescence spectrum. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract As clinicopathological features may not be sufficient to predict the progression of thymoma, we have carried out what we believe to be the first immunohistochemical study describing the relationship between the different types of thymoma and the tumour stage, on the one hand, and the expression of epidermal growth factor (EGF), EGF-receptor (EGFR), p53, v-erb B and ras p21, on the other. The positive rates versus histological types and Masaoka's clinical stages in the 47 cases were as follows: p53 (non-invasive thymoma: 41.7%; malignant thymoma category I: 82.4%; malignant thymoma category II: 83.3%), EGF (non-invasive thymoma: 4.2%; malignant thymoma category I: 11.8%; malignant thymoma category II: 33.3%) and EGFR (non-invasive thymoma: 8.3%; malignant thymoma category I: 35.3%; malignant thymoma category II: 66.7%); p53 (stages I and II: 51.7%; stages III and IV: 77.8%), EGF (stages I and II: 3.4%; stages III and IV: 22.2%) and EGFR (stages I and II: 13.8%; stages III and IV: 44.4%). These data suggest that p53 may be implicated in the initial stages of tumorigenesis and that increased expression of EGF and EGFR may play a role in thymoma progression.

Notes: Abstract. A mathematical model of the HCO− 3-secreting pancreatic ductal epithelium was developed using network thermodynamics. With a minimal set of assumptions, the model accurately reproduced the experimentally measured membrane potentials, voltage divider ratio, transepithelial resistance and short-circuit current of nonstimulated ducts that were microperfused and bathed with a CO2/HCO− 3-free, HEPES-buffered solution, and also the intracellular pH of duct cells bathed in a CO2/HCO− 3-buffered solution. The model also accurately simulated: (i) the effect of step changes in basolateral K+ concentration, and the effect of K+ channel blockers on basolateral membrane potential; (ii) the intracellular acidification caused by a Na+-free extracellular solution and the effect of amiloride on this acidification; and (iii) the intracellular alkalinization caused by a Cl−-free extracellular solution and the effect of DIDS on this alkalinization. In addition, the model predicted that the luminal Cl− conductance plays a key role in controlling both the HCO− 3 secretory rate and intracellular pH during HCO− 3 secretion. We believe that the model will be helpful in the analysis of experimental data and improve our understanding of HCO− 3-transporting mechanisms in pancreatic duct cells.

Notes: Abstract. The volume changes of isolated acini and acinar cells from rat submandibular glands were measured from digitized images recorded upon stimulation of acetylcholine (ACh) or reduction of the perfusate osmolarity and water secretion pathway in salivary gland was studied. When acinus is exposed to a hyposmotic solution, water flows into the acinar cells and into the lumen via acinar epithelia. If the water enters the lumen chiefly via the cells, the swelling of the lumen would follow the same time course as the cell swelling or slower. The results show that reduction of the perfusate osmolarity evoked a transient increase followed by a gradual increase in the volume of unstimulated acinus, while it evoked only a gradual increase in the volumes of unstimulated acinar cells. Thus, the time course of the acinar swelling is faster than that of the acinar cell swelling. Reduction of the perfusate osmolarity also evoked a transient swelling in ACh stimulated acini. When acinus is stimulated by ACh, water also flows into the lumen via acinar epithelia according to the osmotic gradient which was generated by the active electrolyte transport of acinar cells. If the water enters the lumen chiefly from the cells, there would be no overall change in acinar volume. The results show that stimulation of ACh (5 μm) evoked a transient increase followed by a gradual decrease in the volume of the acinus, while it evoked only a decrease in the volume of acinar cells. Video-enhanced optical microscopy exhibited that ACh stimulation caused transient swelling of the luminal space, prior to causing the volume of acinar cells to decrease and the transient swelling of the lumen followed the same time course as that of acinus. Thus, the transient acinar swelling is explained by the transient swelling of luminar volume. These results suggest that water is probably drawn into the lumen from interstitial space directly in the salivary acinus.

Notes: Abstract. Supravalvular aortic stenosis (SVAS) is rare in twins. We report monozygotic twins, both of whom had SVAS, coronary ostial stenosis, and peripheral pulmonary arterial stenosis, but no other phenotypic features of Williams syndrome. One of the twins died suddenly, but the SVAS and the right and left coronary ostial stenoses were enlarged successfully at operation in the other twin.

Notes: Abstract. Postoperative results of surgical repair of complete transposition of the great arteries (TGA) with pulmonary hypertension (PH) in 19 patients in whom mean pulmonary arterial pressure was 〉50 mmHg or the pulmonary/systemic arterial pressure ratio was 〉0.8 were examined. TGA with intact ventricular septum was diagnosed in 10 patients and TGA with ventricular septal defect in 9. At the time of corrective surgery (arterial switch 10, atrial switch 9), patients ranged in age from 7 months to 14 years (mean 2.4 years). Seventeen patients (89%) survived with New York Heart Association functional class I. Seven patients in whom calculated pulmonary vascular resistance was 10–20 U · m2 after surgery survived with subsequent regression of PH. Residual PH was diagnosed in 36% of survivors. Two patients in whom pulmonary vascular resistance was 26 and 36 U · m2, respectively, died after surgery. In patients with TGA, severe PH was not necessarily fatal and was potentially reversible after successful surgery.

Notes: X-ray dynamical diffraction phenomena at a Bragg angle near π/2 are studied. The X-ray transmissivity as well as the reflectivity from the (991) lattice plane of a silicon thin plate is observed. It agrees fairly well with the diffraction pattern calculated on the basis of the Darwin approach. The possibility is discussed whether a set of two crystal plates arranged face to face, in which the diffraction condition with a Bragg angle near π/2 is satisfied, may be used as a very high resolution monochromator.

Notes: Abstract. Venous blood samples, 24-h total food duplicate samples, and rice samples were collected from 52 adult nonsmoking women in the city of Tainan, southern Taiwan, in 1994, and analyzed for cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) by wet-digestion followed by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrophotometry. Daily dietary intake was 10 |gmg for Cd and 22 μg for Pb as geometric means, of which Cd and Pb in rice accounted for 34% and 1.4% of daily Cd and Pb intakes, respectively. The counterpart values for blood were 1.11 ng/ml and 44.5 ng/ml for Cd and Pb, respectively. International comparison with recently published data suggests that the exposure to Cd in Tainan should be among the lowest in the world.

Notes: Abstract The porcine antral follicles, 3–6 mm in diameter, were dissected from the ovaries of mature pigs, and then granulosa and cumulus cells were isolated from each follicle. In atretic follicles, high activity of neutral Ca2+/Mg2+-dependent endonuclease and DNA ladder formation, estimated by electrophoresis, were noted in granulosa cells but not in cumulus cells. Extremely low activity of the endonuclease and no DNA ladder formation were observed in both types of cells obtained from healthy follicles. Moreover, apoptotic cells were observed histochemically among granulosa cells only. A good correlation (r=0.987) between the endonuclease activity of granulosa cells and the progesterone/estradiol ratio of follicular fluid in each follicle was found. These results suggest that apoptosis occurs in granulosa cells but not cumulus cells in the atretic antral follicles in pigs.
