Notes: Photoconductive and photovoltaic responses in glassy Ag–As–S ion-conducting semiconductors have been studied. The ac conductivity of the glass increases with illumination, while the increase is ascribed to enhanced ionic conduction caused by temperature rise and to interfacial photoeffects. Bulk photocurrent is not detected. By contrast, photovoltages appear in Ag–As–S samples having sandwich and floating electrodes. The photovoltaic characteristics are discussed in terms of classical electrodynamics assuming interaction between electronic carriers and Ag+ ions. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Physical properties of Ag2S-As2S3 glassy alloys have been studied as a function of the Ag atomic concentration x. With an increase in x, the optical-absorption edge exhibits a red shift, while the steepness of the Urbach tail changes little. In the glasses with x≥15, the electrical conductivity is governed by Ag+ ionic conduction. The ionic conductivity exponentially increases with x, and in contrast the hole conductivity hardly changes with x; however, the activation energies for the ionic and the hole conductivity are nearly the same at about 0.4 eV for compositions with 15 ≤x≤35. These observations are discussed on the basis of atomic and electronic structures in Ag2S-As2S3 glasses. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A magnetic force sensing system using a highly sensitive force sensor was developed to measure the two-dimensional distribution of superconducting properties of high Tc materials. A probing tip made of a small piece of magnetized material was mounted on a cantilever scanned over superconducting surfaces. Magnetic properties of the superconductor generated force on the tip and the force was measured by an optical displacement sensor. Two kinds of YBCO superconductor were examined by the measuring system in order to compare their repulsive force and shielding characteristics. Two-dimensional distribution of repulsive force due to the Meissner effect of YBCO, which was fabricated by the melt powder melt growth (MPMG) process, showed evident nonuniformity which is attributed to the nonuniformity of chemical composition of the material. Although the MPMG materials are capable to be used as a magnetic shield, they have much larger residual flux than the materials fabricated by the solid phase reaction process.

Notes: A new measuring system using an optical fiber and a position sensing photodetector was developed to measure a three-dimensional distribution of a magnetic force. A steel ball attached to a cantilever made of an optical fiber generated force in a magnetic field. The displacement of the ball due to the force was detected by a position-sensing photodetector with the capability of detecting two-directional coordinates of the position. By scanning the sensing system in a magnetic field, we obtained distributions of two-directional component of the magnetic force vector. The component represents the gradient of a squared magnetic field. The usefulness of the system for measuring the magnetic field distribution in a narrow clearance and for evaluating superconducting machine components such as magnetic bearings was verified experimentally.

Notes: Surface-reaction film-formation technology of epitaxial Si and polcrystalline silicon using free-jet molecular flow is proposed. High-rate (∼0.5 μm/min or higher) growth of homoepitaxial Si films with high crystallographic perfection has been achieved at temperatures as low as 600 °C without the chemical by-product deposition on the inner surface of the reaction chamber. This result also implies that this system has the cleaning-free function. The film-formation mechanism appears to be dominated by the chemical reaction on the substrate surface without the vapor phase reaction.

Notes: A series array of NbN/TiNx/NbN/TiNx/NbN double-barrier junctions was fabricated on Si wafers, and their current–voltage (I–V) characteristics were measured with and without microwave power in order to investigate their performance for programmable voltage standards. By adjusting the thickness of the TiNx barrier, nearly identical critical currents were obtained for 128 lower and 128 upper junctions in an array. When applying 8 GHz microwave power to an array, a large constant-voltage step (∼3 mA) appeared on the I–V curve. The zero-voltage critical current and the height of the first (n=1) constant-voltage step showed microwave-power dependences coincident with theoretical prediction. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Aims : To investigate the effects of rebamipide on the Helicobacter pylori eradication rate with amoxicillin and omeprazole. The trial also examined its histological effects on gastro-mucosal inflammation after eradication. Methods : Two hundred and six H. pylori-positive patients with active gastric ulcer underwent 8-week based therapy (OA) consisting of 2-week amoxicillin with omeprazole and subsequent 6-week omeprazole. They randomly received either rebamipide (OA-R) or placebo (OA-P) for 16 weeks: combined with the OA based therapy, and subsequently for another 8 weeks. Besides eradication rate, inflammatory findings of gastric mucosa after eradication were evaluated histologically. Results : Per Protocol Set analysis showed no significant difference in eradication rate between OA-R (64.6%; 95% confidence interval, 54.3–75.0%) and OA-P (67.9%; 95% CI, 57.6–78.3%). Histological findings in the gastric mucosa of the ulcer region, however, indicated a significant improvement (P = 0.017) in inflammation scores in OA-R (1.84 ± 0.41) compared with that in OA-P (2.02 ± 0.39) after 16-weeks of treatment. This suppressive effect on inflammation was observed even in the OA-R patients unsuccessfully eradicated. Conclusion : Rebamipide demonstrated a suppressive effect on the persistent and possibly chronic inflammation in the gastric mucosa of the ulcer region after eradication, but the drug did not improve the eradication rate.

Notes: : Enhanced MAdCAM-1 (mucosal addressin cell adhesion molecule-1) expression is associated with the aetiology of inflammatory bowel disease, but little is known about MAdCAM-1: regulation, or how inflammatory bowel disease therapies modulate MAdCAM-1.〈section xml:id="abs1-2"〉〈title type="main"〉Aim: To examine how agents currently used to treat inflammatory bowel disease affect MAdCAM-1: induced by tnf-α in an in vitro model of inflammatory bowel disease.〈section xml:id="abs1-3"〉〈title type="main"〉Methods: Endothelial monolayers were pretreated with dexamethasone (DEX): 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA), 6-mercaptopurine (6-MP), sulfasalazine or interleukin-10: (IL-10: prior to TNF-α (20 ng/mL), and MAdCAM-1: measured by Western blotting, RT-PCR, EMSA and lymphocyte adhesion assays.〈section xml:id="abs1-4"〉〈title type="main"〉Results: MAdCAM-1: was induced dose- and time-dependently by TNF-α on endothelial cells. Either dexamethasone or IL-10: reduced TNF-α-induced MAdCAM-1: protein, mRNA and lymphocyte adhesion. However, neither 5-ASA, sulfasalazine nor 6-MP blocked MAdCAM-1 induction.〈section xml:id="abs1-5"〉〈title type="main"〉Conclusions: Our data indicate that dexamethasone or IL-10 can exert therapeutic activity in inflammatory bowel disease through MAdCAM-1 inhibition. 5-ASA, sulfasalazine and 6-MP, while beneficial in inflammatory bowel disease, do not directly control MAdCAM-1, and are beneficial through inhibition of other inflammatory processes.
