    Notes: Extensive studies on dispersion-free solvent extraction have been carried out using modules made with either hydrophobic or hydrophilic microporous hollow-fiber membranes. Membrane and boundary layer resistances have been characterized for both kinds of hollow fiber using solvent extraction systems with a wide variation of distribution coefficients and interfacial tensions. It has been found that the Graetz solution for a constant wall concentration describes satisfactorily mass transfer on the lumen side of a hollow-fiber device. A correlation of the form NSh = [Dh(1 - φ)/L]NRe0.6NSc0.33 appears to provide a close fit to the shell-side mass transfer coefficient data. The perforamnce characteristics of dispersion-free extraction in hollow-fiber modules have been considered against those of commercial packed-bed extractors. A perspective has been provided on comparative utilities of hydrophobic or hydrophilic hollow fibers for a given solvent extraction problem.

    Notes: A model is presented for convection and chemical reacton in porous media. An irreversible chemical reaction of arbitrary order is considered. Reactant depletion allows for basic solutions in either the kinetic or the diffusion regime. The cases of forced flow parallel to the lateral walls of the cavity and a closed system are addressed. A linear stability analysis of the basic states is performed and critical values of the thermal Rayleigh number for the onset of natural convection are determined. A dispersion relation is derived and a graphical representation of the linear stability analysis results is provided for typical values of the system parameters. Analytical predictions are verified by results obtained by numerical integration of the complete set of nonlinear partial differential equations. The effect of natural convection is discussed when the basic state is either in the kinetic or in the diffusion regime. For large gradients, associated with the diffusion regime, chemical reaction can drive free convection even for low values of the Rayleigh number. In forced flow systems, natural convection can change substantially the flow pattern of the system.

    Notes: Advancing and colliding flow fronts are important fluid mechanical problems in injection mold filling. These are small-scale, transient free-surface flows with a significant impact on the molecular orientation of molded parts. This paper describes a numerical technique for the simulation of transient free-surface flows. The algorithm combines a Galerkin/finite-element discretization of the governing equations with a predictor-corrector scheme for integration in time, and determines simultaneously the flow field and the free surface at every time step. The method is applied to the start-up of a fluid flow initially at rest and impingement of two flow fronts to form a weldline. Comparison of simulation with available experiments on the start-up problem shows very good agreement. Numerical tracking of fluid elements clarifies various aspects of flow-induced deformation of the material.

    Notes: A strategy is proposed for synthesizing operating procedures for purging species from chemical processing systems during start-up. This strategy is based in part on the artificial intelligence methods of planning with constraints and symbolic functional modeling of chemical processing systems. Techniques are introduced for identifying chemical species to be purged, choosing methods and auxiliary fluids for executing purge tasks, and allocating chemical species to their final destinations. The implementation of this strategy is illustrated with the example of purging a hydrocarbon chlorination system during start-up.

    Notes: A study was carried out of the momentum and the heat transfer to fine alumina particles injected into a DC plasma jet. Measurements are reported of particle number flux distribution, particle velocity, and inflight particle surface temperature under different operating conditions. The results show that the particle trajectories and associated particle flux distribution depends to a large extent on the particle injection velocity. The maximum particle velocity and surface temperature are noted, however, to remain close to the centerline of the jet, independent of the particle injection conditions. The maximum surface temperature reached by the particles increases with increasing plasma power and the use of an Ar/H2 plasma gas (17 vol. % H2) compared to that for a pure argon plasma.The particle velocity data are in good agreement with the predictions of a two-dimensional mathermatical model used for the calculation of the particle trajectories and temperature history. The model predictions, however, agreed only in trend with the measured particle surface temperatures. Deviations between the two could still be observed at large distances from the point of injection of the powder. The computed particle number flux distributions were narrower than the measured profiles, which can be attributed to the fact that the model did not include, at this stage, turbulent particle diffusion effects.

    Notes: Fossil fuel process oils consist of such a large number of components that their only proper description is in terms of continuous distribution functions of a suitable characteristic variable. A methodology is presented to describe the oils in terms of a generalized distribution function. The characteristic variable is determined from measurements of the equilibrium ratios of two test oils, at ambient pressure. Application of the proposed methodology to a sequence of operations shows that, unlike the pseudocomponents technique, the level of accuracy can be maintained.

    Notes: All process designs are subject to uncertainties which make it impossible to state with complete certainty that a design will work. This study presents a measure of design confidence which considers the nature of the uncertainty and the operability of the process as a whole. This measure, called design reliability, quantifies the likelihood that a design will work. Detailed analyses are presented for three special cases: designs subject to random uncertainties, designs subject to fuzzy uncertainties, and designs subject to both random and fuzzy uncertainties. Practical procedures for estimating design reliability in these special cases are also presented.

    Notes: Drops are stabilized in agitated liquid-liquid systems by both surface and internal viscous forces. The dispersion of an inviscid liquid into a turbulent continuous phase in static mixers has been studied but the effect of dispersed phase viscosity is not well understood. Systematic experiments have been conducted in a Kenics mixer by photographically examining dilute suspensions of viscous oils in water to determine how viscosity and conditions of agitation affect equilibrium mean drop size and size distribution. A semiempirical theory is developed which correlates the mean size data and collapses to the well-known Weber number result in the inviscid limit. A correlation for drop size distribution in terms of cumulative volume frequency is developed by normalization with the Sauter mean diameter D32. Measurements at the mixer entrance indicate that the method of introduction of the dispersed phase should be considered when evaluating mixer performance.

    Notes: Nonlinear inferential control (NLIC) has been developed as a method for improving control of nonlinear systems. The controller is modelbased, and allows for direct use of available measurements. This paper presents the structure of NLIC and the manner in which it is applied to processes when the controlled variables are measured. Also described is the improvement in the process control using NLIC. Two illustrative examples are presented, a laboratory heat exchanger process and a simulated neutralization process. The results indicate that a substantial improvement in control is possible using NLIC.

    Notes: A study of the efficiencies of two plate distillation columns is reported. One column had three rectangular trays with a flow path length of about 1 m, the other was a modified glass Oldershaw column with one tray of 38 mm dia. Tray efficiencies were measured in both columns and point efficiencies were deduced for the rectangular column.The systems studied were ternary and quaternary mixtures of alcohols and water. The results showed that for thermodynamically nonideal systems significant differences existed among the individual component point efficiencies. In the case of an ideal system the component point efficiencies were effectively equal, but tray efficiencies were different due to differing volatilities and composition profiles across the large trays.This study illustrates the need to allow for the above effects in large-column designs for multicomponent systems. The possibility of using laboratory-scale point efficiencies in these designs is explored.

    Notes: An experimental study was made of tracer dispersion in bidisperse sintered glass materials prepared from mixtures of two sizes of beads with mean diameters of 325 and 95 μm. The equivalent dispersion coefficient increases by a factor of 30 when the porosity decreases from 30 to 12%; this variation is similar to that measured in monodisperse samples. The variation of dispersion can be characterized by the ratio R = ℓd/L1 where ℓd is a length scale deduced from the equivalent dispersion coefficient and L1 is obtained from conductivity and permeability measurements. It is shown that the increase of ℓd/L1 correlates with the loss of porosity during the sintering process. Lightly sintered samples with a percentage of small beads around the minimum of porosity display a nearly Gaussian behavior, with a dispersion coefficient close to that obtained in homogeneous equivalent mixtures. This result is in contrast with very large anomalies observed by other authors. These results imply that dispersion in consolidated samples is sensitive to large-scale inhomogeneities of the materials rather than to their detailed structure.

    Notes: On-line optimizing control has been used to find and track the economically optimal operating conditions of a packed-bed reactor. The continuous reactor under study converts the ammonium salt of fumaric acid to aspartic acid using whole cells immobilizing in K-carrageenan beads. The on-line optimizing control was performed using a leastsquares recursive estimation algorithm with a variable forgetting factor to estimate the parameters in a linear discrete-time model. A Newton optimization procedure used these parameters to calculate the direction and distance to the optimal conditions. Features found to enhance the speed and stability of the algorithm included the use of a variable forgetting factor algorithm, both low- and high-pass filtering of the data, outlier rejection, and linearizing input-outupt transformations.

    Notes: A general physical model of a typical batch extraction system employing liquid surfactant membranes is developed. The model takes into account the continuous-phase resistance and the interfacial resistance along with permeation through a composite emulsion globule. It also quantifies the loss in extraction efficiencies by leakage of the encapsulated phase due to membrane breakage. The physical model is easily adapted to apply to the case of transport facilitation wherein the solute is reacted in the internal phase to yield products incapable of permeating through the membrane phase. Experimental data on o-chlorophenol extraction are satisfactorily correlated with the model.

    Notes: A new thermodynamic model is presented for aqueous solutions of polar nonelectrolytes. The model is based on solute aggregation in an aqueous lattice, which is inferred from spectroscopic, thermodynamic, and physiochemical data. The adjustable model parameters have physical meaning, and are less intercorrelated and temperature-dependent than are the parameters in other models such as the UNIQUAC and NRTL equations, which apply to a more general class of solutions. The model describes observed extrema in the activity coefficients of aqueous solutions, thus pointing out that the behaviors of aqueous and non-aqueous solutions are fundamentally different, and that aqueous solutions cannot be well described with nonaqueous solution models over the whole concentration range. The two-parameter form of the new model can better predict binary vapor-liquid equilibria from liquid-liquid equilibrium data than other two-parameter models, and gives better predictions of ternary liquid-liquid equilibrium using only binary data. It is also shown that the model can be used to describe aqueous solutions of water-soluble polymers.

    Notes: Diffusion flux models are developed for isobaric diffusion of a multicomponent gas mixture in pore networks of distributed pore size and length constructed by arranging pore segments around the bonds of a lattice of constant coordination number. Eigenvalue-eigevector analysis is used to decompose the dusty-gas model equations, written for each pore segment in the network, into a set of independent single-species diffusion problems, each of which is then treated by combining the effective medium theory for resistor networks with the smooth field approximation (Burganos and Sotirchos, 1987). Results for a ternary mixture diffusing in a porous slab show that direct application of the smooth field approximation underestimates significantly the mass transport resistance.

    Notes: Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) tracer desorption technique in combination with the traditional pulsed field gradient technique is applied to measure directly intracrystalline and long-range molecular transport, as well as molecular exchange rates, between the individual crystallites in granulated molecular sieves. It is found that the granulation process leads to the formation of transport resistances on the external surface of the crystallites, which may be dramatically enhanced during their technical application. As an example, for granulated zeolite NaCaA the enhancement of such surface barriers under hydrothermal conditions and under the influence of a hydrocarbon atmosphere is studied. Since both intra- and intercrystalline transport are found to remain practically unaffected by this treatment, changes in the overall transport behavior are caused by the enhanced transport resistance on the external surface of the zeolite crystallites.

    Notes: The absorption of mixtures of nitrogen oxides into aqueous solutions of NaOH in the range of partial pressures of 0.004- to 0.05-atm NO and 0.002- to 0.015-atm NO2 was investigated. Absorption experiments were conducted in a gas-liquid contactor that permitted independent variation of the gas and liquid mass transfer coefficients. The results were analyzed in terms of a model which accounted for diffusion, reaction, and formation of higher oxides and oxyacids in the gas and in the liquid phases. Absorption of both HNO2 and N2O3, formed in the bulk gas and within the gas diffusion film, were found to be significant. Using a rate coefficient of 8.8 × 10-3 mol/s · cm3 · atm3 for the formation of HNO2 in the gas phase (England and Corcoran, 1975), a value of the absorption factor, H √Dk, for N2O3 of 2.5 × 10-3 mol/s cm2 atm was determined at 25°C. This value was found to decrease with temperature and was 1.2 × 10-3 at 40°C. The use of concentrated base as an absorbent solution prevented the formation of nitric acid mist, a problem encountered in many previous studies of NOx absorption.

    Notes: The continuous stirred tank emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate has shown oscillatory behavior in conversion, particle size, molecular weight, and polydispersity during polymerization. The kinetics in vinyl acetate emulsion polymerization are especially complex because of chain transfer to polymer and monomer and the terminal double bond reaction. A nonsteady-state model to predict the average molecular weights is developed for this polymerization system. Improved results are achieved by inclusion of the effects of polymer chain initiation and termination by absorbed radicals. It is found that the observed oscillations are closely related to the radical diffusion and desorption rates that are involved in a heterogeneous initiation mechanism. The molecular weights and polydispersities are successfully predicted by the model. The nature of the oscillations in these properties is examined.

    Notes: Lumping of the kinetics of mixtures described by a continuous distribution function of concentration is discussed for the case where individual reactions have nonlinear kinetics. The assumption of independent kinetics, which leads to a paradox, is not used. Functional-differential equations govern the kinetic behavior of the mixture. Formal solutions are presented for a class of kinetic behavior that includes Langmuir isotherm catalysis and for the special case of bimolecular reactions. A class is defined for which the kinetic functionals can be expanded in a series of integrals for which the kernels are entirely determined. Finally, a thermodynamic analysis is presented to show that the commonly accepted equilibrium theory implies a kinetic approximation of maximal rank for the kinetics at the equilibrium point.

    Notes: The partial internal wetting of spherical catalyst particles exposed to saturated vapor is investigated here by considering the interplay of capillary condensation phenomena and thermal effects for a first-order irreversible reaction. It is shown that for certain very narrow ranges of parameters steady states can exist in which the macropores are vapor-filled while micropores in an inner core, or an outer shell, are liquid-filled. Under certain conditions even two such steady states are found, although only one of them can be stable. In addition to these there exist states in which all the micropores are liquid-filled or those in which the entire particle is internally dry.

    Notes: The recent theory for pore volume diffusion in porous media (Bhatia, 1985, 1986) is further extended to include surface diffusion with adsorption-desorption phenomena proceeding at finite rates. The short-range memory effects, previously discussed in terms of a correlation between successive pores traversed, are included here and are found to be important for surface diffusion as well. A tortuosity for surface diffusion is defined and found to be larger than 3, in the range of 5 to 7, because of internal correlation effects in the random network structure examined.     Notes: The rate of dissolution of sphalerite is shown to be directly proportional to the concentration of substitutional iron impurity in the solid. This is attributed to the formation of a narrow impurity band within the forbidden band gap of the sphalerite. The impurity band is of iron d-orbital origin. The transfer of electrons between this d-orbital band and the oxidant is energetically more favorable than the transfer of electrons between the valence band and the oxidant. A fundamental model combining the electronic structure of sphalerite and semiconductor electrochemistry is presented. An equation is derived that describes the rate of dissolution as being first order for the concentration of iron in the solid and half-order for the concentration of the oxidant. This is in agreement with the experimental evidence.

    Notes: A new liquid membrane separation technique for gas mixtures has been developed: feed and sweep gases flow through the lumen of two different sets of hydrophobic microporous hollow fibers while a liquid on the shell side acts as the membrane. This membrane is identified as the contained liquid membrane (CLM). Major shortcomings of immobilized liquid membrane techniques are eliminated. The novel separation device is identified as the hollow fiber contained liquid membrane (HFCLM) permeator. Experimental studies are made with different CO2-N2 feed mixtures and a pure helium sweep stream, with special emphasis on model landfill gas purification. Either pure water or an aqueous solution of K2CO3 is used as membrane. The effects of several variables on the performance of the HFCLM permeator have been studied. A three-component permeation model, incorporating axial pressure drop, is developed for binary mixture separation in a HFCLM permeator having a sweep gas stream. The experimental data show good agreement with the theoretical predictions.

    Notes: A numerical computation is carried out to study the interaction of rotation and natural convection inside a finite horizontal cylinder. The natural convection is due to differential heating on the two ends, while the rotation is along the axis of the horizontal cylinder. The aspect ratio, length of the cylinder to its radius, is 2.0. The Grashof number is fixed at 1.43 × 106 with air as a working fluid. The effect of rotation is examined with Gr/Re2 from 7.0 × 10-2 to ∞, which covers the range from rotation dominated flow to buoyancy dominated flow. It is found that when rotational speed is relatively small or Gr/Re2 » 1, the effect of rotation is to render the spatial heat flux distribution more uniform. As the rotational speed increases, the heat transfer rate distribution on the end surfaces is more homogenous and its level is also reduced. When the rotational speed is sufficiently high (Gr/Re2 « 1.0), heat transfer is by conduction only and the whole fluid inside the enclosure rotates as a rigid body. It is shown that there exists a rotation speed range in which one can have both relatively high and uniform heat transfer rates on the end walls.

    Notes: Conversion distribution in particles of chlorinated poly(vinyl chloride) (CPVC) is conceptually described based on balance equations involving mass transfer and chemical reaction. In the physical sorption of chlorine in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) as measured by the constant volume cell method, equilibrium concentration and diffusion rate obeyed Henry's law and Fick's law. The rate process of photo chlorination of PVC, which was investigated by the gravimetric method, could be well predicted by theoretical calculation of chlorine diffusion in PVC accompanying the infinitely fast chemical reaction. In a free grain of PVC synthesized by suspension polymerization, the chlorination rate was governed by the polymer-phase diffusion within agglomerates of coalesced primary particles.To produce homogeneously chlorinated PVC, a periodic photo-irradiation method was theoretically proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The effect of the periodic operation on the thermal property of CPVC was evaluated by DSC.

    Notes: The hollow fiber contained liquid membrane (CLM) is a thin liquid film contained in the interstices of two sets of intermingled microporous hollow fine fibers. Organic CLM-s have been used here for the separation of solutes from an aqueous feed into an aqueous strip. Solutes studied are phenol and acetic acid. The separations are carried out in either hydrophilic or hydrophobic hollow fiber CLM permeator modules, using a variety of organic liquids (e.g., decanol, methyl isobutyl ketone, xylene) as membranes. First-order models have been developed to predict the overall solute transfer coefficients adequately. The transfer coefficient can be enhanced significantly when a chemical reaction is carried out on the strip side using NaOH. The advantages of the CLM structure include operational stability, independent control of membrane phase pressure, automatic replenishment of the lost membrane liquid, and absence of the need for preequilibration. These features are demonstrated here, even for systems with considerable aqueous-organic mutual solubilities.

    Notes: A numerical model has been developed to predict the formation of carbon black particles by benzene pyrolysis. The approach, patterned after the work of Jensen, assumes that particle formation is controlled by four steps: gas phase reactions producing radical species, nucleation, growth and coagulation, and oxidation. In the present model, 15 reactions based on the work of Fujii and Asaba are used to describe the gas phase kinetics in which the phenyl radical is treated as the important intermediate in the formation of carbon black. A discrete distribution of 10 particle radii is also used to approximate the simultaneous growth and coagulation of spherical carbon particles. The results of the model show that a self-preserving log normal distribution of carbon particles develops after an initial nucleation and growth period. The model results also compare favorably with reactor data. In particular, the numerical model predicts a mass median carbon particle diameter to within 10% of measured values.

    Notes: A new approach is presented to overcome load disturbance problems. Based on the parallel cascade control structure, the primary controller is designed for the servo response, and the secondary controller is designed for the disturbance-rejection purpose. A perfect disturbance-rejection controller is derived for the secondary loop. Simulation studies show that improvement in load responses can be achieved for some cases. However, for some other cases, parallel cascade control simply worsens the load responses as a result of interaction between primary and secondary loops. A new interaction measure for load disturbance (γ) is proposed to determine whether improved load responses is achievable using cascade control structure. More importantly, the interaction measure also quantifies the margin of improvement that can be achieved over conventional single-loop control. A design procedure for improved load responses was proposed. The simulation results show that the new approach offers a simple and effective alternative for disturbance-rejection.

    Notes: The effect of viscoelasticity on the kinetics of the shear-induced flocculation of colloids has been investigated theoretically and experimentally. A numerical technique for such three-dimensional problems called global residual minimization (GRM) has been developed as an alternative to finite element and finite difference methods. In the GRM method, minimization of the residual of the momentum balance is used as the selection criterion for the velocity-field solution. Trajectory simulations were carried out for spheres in a corotational Jeffreys fluid at a variety of Weissenberg numbers, We. For We ≤ 0.01, the effect of viscoelasticity is found to be negligible. For We = 1.0, flocculation rates are enhanced. For We = 10.0, a possibly large reduction in flocculation rate is indicated.Experiments were conducted using 600 nm radius polystyrene spheres in hydroxyethyl cellulose solutions. At shear rates corresponding roughly to We = 10.5 and 15.3, the flocculation rates were found to be at least an order of magnitude less than the rate expected in a Newtonian fluid. It is postulated that this reduction in flocculation rate is caused by the viscoelasticity of the suspending fluid.

    Notes: The population balance for batch aggregation of particulate suspensions is recast in a form that may be solved simply and accurately. The transformed equation is deduced with the introduction of only one additional parameter, which is found to be a constant for all cases. The transformed equation is tested by comparison with some analytical solutions with which it is found to be in excellent agreement. In particular, the equation is shown to predict correctly the rate of change of total particle number and volume. Compatible descriptions of linear growth and nucleation are developed with similar success.The method is then applied to modeling the in vitro growth and aggregation of kidney stones (calcium oxalate monohydrate crystals). It is found that these phenomena are well described by McCabe's ΔL law, a size-independent coalescence kernel, and first-order kinetics. Simulated particle size distributions and their moments are in excellent agreement with the experimental results.

    Notes: In cocurrent downflow of a gas and a liquid through a packed column, a transition from trickling flow to pulsing flow is observed as one increases the flow rates. A simple macroscopic model for the two-phase flow is analyzed to examine whether this regime transition should be viewed as the loss of stability of a steady state or the loss of existence of any solution for the steady-state equations of motion. The former appears to be a more reasonable interpretation and an explicit algebraic criterion for the onset of pulsing is presented.

    Notes: Aerosol deposition in model filters composed of layers of parallel fibers with the orientation of the fiber of each layer kept arbitrary was simulated stochastically. Particle positions at the inlet of the filter were assumed to be randomly distributed over the inlet plane with the trajectory assumed to be rectilinear because of the particles' high inertia. In the simulation, the track of each particle through the filter was monitored and the possible bounce-off from collision surfaces was allowed for. Deposition behavior and the structure of deposits were studied with various aerosol flow conditions and filter characteristics.

    Notes: A novel amidoxime-group-containing adsorbent of hollow-fiber form (AO-H fiber) was prepared by radiation-induced graft polymerization of acrylonitrile onto a polyethylene hollow fiber, followed by chemical conversion of the produced cyano group to an amidoxime group. Distribution of the amidoxime group was uniform throughout the hollow-fiber membrane. The fixed-bed adsorption column, 30 cm in length and charged with the bundle of AO-H fibers, was found to adsorb uranium from natural seawater at a sufficiently high rate: 0.66 mg uranium per g of adsorbent in 25 days.

    Notes: When thin films of liquid are produced by roll coaters it is commonly observed that the liquid film is not uniform but shows either regular or irregular patterns resulting from hydrodynamic origins. The appearance of the liquid film has been considered to be governed by the flow geometry and dynamics in a nip region between two adjacent solid planes.Experimental work was done to observe the flow geometries in the nip region and patterns of liquid film by using a roll-stationary, transparent flat plate system. Two fundamental mechanisms for rib disappearance in practical high-speed coatings were recognized. It was also found that the constant rib interval for infinite capillary number depends not only upon the minimum gap size but also upon the physical properties of the liquid. Experimental data are presented in dimensionless form for meniscus position, rib interval, constant rib interval, and for the critical or transient conditions of rib formation, rib disappearance, unstead ribbing, and centrifugal splash.Comparison of present results for the speed ratio U2/U1 = 0 with previous results for U2/U1 = 1 shows the significance of the speed ratio to the meniscus position and the rib interval.

    Notes: If a given liquid exhibits a density maximum anywhere in its phase diagram, thermodynamic consistency dictates that such a point cannot be isolated: a density maxima locus must necessarily exist. For a fluid that does not also exhibit density minima, the pressure-temperature projection of such a locus is negatively sloped, and can only end at a stability limit. There exist two thermodynamically consistent ways in which such an intersection can occur, and they correspond, respectively, to the highest and lowest possible temperatures at which a liquid can exhibit a negative coefficient of thermal expansion. These theoretical predictions are confirmed by experimental observations. The existence of density anomalies anywhere in a liquid's phase diagram is shown to have a profound influence in determining the shape of such a fluid's stability boundary.

    Notes: In the reconciliation of measurements of flows and concentrations so that they conform to conservation laws and other constraints, any gross errors in the measurements must be identified in order that they can be either corrected or deleted.A new method is derived for the recursive prediction of the changes in the objective function, and of the statistical tests for the measurements, which would result from the deletion of suspect measurements. Inverses of large matrices are not required and the reconciliation can also be easily calculated for any set of deletions. It is shown that the decrease in the objective function caused by deletion of a single measurement equals the square of the corresponding maximum power measurement statistic, calculated prior to that deletion. An algorithm for the detection of suspect sets of gross errors, whose deletion leads to acceptable values of all statistical tests and process flow rates, is proposed and illustrated.

    Notes: Gas separation based on differences in intraparticle diffusion rates was achieved by four-step pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process. The application studied was the separation of nitrogen from air using molecular sieve type RS-10. Systematic PSA experiments were conducted in bench-scale equipment to study several variables, including duration of steps of the cycle, flow rates, pressure ratio, subatmospheric blowdown and purge, and column geometry.The test results were compared with predictions of a mathematical model (Shin and Knaebel, 1987). In all cases, the trends of product purity and net recovery of both theory and experiment were in close agreement. Since the theory accurately portrays the overall behavior of the process, the transport mechanisms embodied in the theory may provide insight into diffusion-induced separation by PSA. In addition, by reviewing the results of the parametric studies of the variables, it has been possible to gain an intuitive understanding of the relations between factors that affect each step, and hence overall performance.

    Notes: A novel microreactor with a rapid direct quench system was developed to study fast hydrocarbon pyrolysis reactions. Heating of reactants inside the reactor was achieved by a Curie Point Pyrolyser. The propane pyrolysis reaction was studied at four different temperature levels: 600, 700, 800 and 900 °C. Pyrolysis times were varied from 0 to 2 s between 600 to 800°C and from 0 to 1 s at 900°C. The primary reaction products were methane, ethylene, hydrogen and propylene. Using a developed and very effective quench technique increased the production of olefins and reduced the formation of methane. A first-order kinetic analysis performed on the experimental data between 600 and 700°C yielded an activation energy of 216 kJ/mol, which is in the range of other researchers.

Measurements of the wave amplitude spectrum show that, for liquid film Reynolds numbers greater than about 100, roll waves evolve from disturbances that initially have wave-lengths much longer than the film thickness and which grow slowly with distance. Predictions of linear stability analysis are shown to agree well with the observation of these instabilities and not the visual transition to roll waves as was suggested in earlier studies. For very thin films, the data do not give conclusive proof of the origin of roll waves, but it is speculated that these are actually solitary waves which have begun to break.

    Notes: A new asymptotic solution is developed for the dispersion of a passive solute in a Newtonian fluid in fully-developed laminar flow through a straight circular tube. A perturbation solution to the convective dispersion problem is constructed by utilizing the pure diffusion solution as an initial approximation in an iterative successive approximation procedure. The derived perturbation solution is shown to be valid at both short and long times for sufficiently low values of the Peclet number and is also valid at any value of the Peclet number for sufficiently small values of time.

    Notes: Mathematical models are developed to examine two alternative means of boron doping from boron-rich glass films. For the planar source diffusion system, in which boron diffusion and glass film growth occur simultaneously at high temperature (900-1,200°C), glass film growth rates and the degree of doping achieved are predicted. In most cases, the solubility limit of boron in silicon is attained at the silicon surface. It is found that depletion of the boron source wafers used in this process may be slowed considerably by their removal from the reactor after a short time. Model predictions for an alternative method, in which the glass film is pregrown at low temperature (300°C) and the diffusion subsequently performed at high temperature, demonstrate a strong dependence of the boron surface concentration on the initial boron content in the pregrown glass film, for concentrations of boron near the solubility limit. The conditions for which a masking film of SiO2 is insufficient to prevent boron diffusion into silicon, known as mask failure, are also predicted by the models.

    Notes: Theoretical and experimental studies of pressure swing adsorption (PSA) cycles for various extents of purging have been conducted. In both the theoretical and experimental portions, pressurization was accomplished with product rather than with feed. A simple, local equilibrium model was employed, and the results were analyzed by the method of characteristics. It was found that for difficult separations (i.e., closely spaced isotherms and/or heavily contaminated feeds), incomplete purging, e.g., as little as 50% complete, yielded recoveries attainable only at much higher pressure ratios with complete purge. Conversely, for easy separations (i.e., widely spaced isotherms and dilutely contaminated feeds), incomplete purging was less attractive, yielding only slight improvement over complete purge.Splitting oxygen from air with zeolite 5A is moderately difficult due to the proximity of the isotherms and due to the predominance of the more strongly adsorbed nitrogen in the feed. This case was also modeled and was studied experimentally. The experiments yielded nearly double the recovery of oxygen for minimal purge compared with that available with complete purge. The productivity of oxygen was relatively high, e.g., 0.0378 m3(O2 at STP)/kg (adsorbent) · h. Those experiments validated the trends predicted theoretically.

    Notes: The measurement of gas-liquid interfacial areas and mass transfer coefficients in concurrent upward bubbly flow (uG from 0.02 to 0.16 m/s, uL from 0.0051 to 0.056 m/s) over a packed bed consisting of 1.2 mm glassy carbon particles is described. Specific surface areas were measured by chemical absorption of O2 into Na2SO3 solutions; volumetric mass transfer coefficients were measured by physical desorption of O2 into N2 bubbles. Surface areas were obtained in the range of 4 × 103 to 2 × 105 m-1, much higher than have been previously reported. High areas are related to the use of electrolytes and small packing particles. Bubble size was found to depend primarily on liquid velocity. Volumetric mass transfer coefficients kLaG are also high (0.1 〈 kLaG 〈 2.3 s-1), primarily as a result of high gas-liquid interfacial areas. Mass transfer coefficients kL are small, however. For the smaller bubble dispersions, mass transport is controlled by diffusion rather than by convection.

    Notes: Thin polymeric films have been applied to the surface of a porous material in a novel process. Nitrogen sorption, a conventional tool for measuring surface areas and pore size distributions, can be employed for determining the thickness of such films through a comparison of the pore size distribution curves before and after film formation. The thickness of a polystyrene film on a porous alumina powder is determined and compared with the theoretical thickness for styrene polymerized inside a two-dimensional solvent, which consists of a partial bilayer of sodium dodecyl sulfate physically adsorbed from an aqueous solution onto the powder. Film thicknesses ranged from 1.8 to 0.4 nm while BET surface area decreased from 94.7 to 57.8 m2/g. The powder surface changes from hydrophilic to hydrophobic while retaining the basic pore structure.

    Notes: A lumping procedure is proposed for continuous reaction mixtures whose components undergo nonlinear reactions. A species-type distribution function is introduced to ensure that the lumped continuous mixture is kinetically consistent with the underlying lumped discrete mixture. It is shown that, if the mixture contains some virtually unreactive species, the lump after a long time will react at a second-order rate. This is true as long as the underlying unlumped reactions are irreversible nth-order with n 〈 2 or reversible first order. When many first-order reversible reactions are lumped together, the apparent behavior of the lump can qualitatively look like that of a reversible reaction. Practical implications of these predictions are discussed. Some published data are reconciled in light of the present theoretical development.

    Notes: Heat transfer analysis of falling film evaporation on a bank of horizontal tubes is investigated in this study. Liquid falling from one tube to the next lower one is considered as a thin liquid jet impinging on the top of the tube with a uniform free falling velocity. The hydrodynamic and thermal solutions are obtained by a finite difference method. In these solutions the heat transfer coefficients are modified to account for waviness.Liquid film thickness and local and average heat transfer coefficients are obtained for the constant heat flux and isothermal boundary conditions. Convective heat transfer effects are shown to be dominant as Peclet number increases. Heat transfer coefficients for the tubes in a tube bank decrease from the first tube onwards until the fully developed region is reached. The present predictions agree favorably with the reported heat transfer data.

    Notes: Monte Carlo simulations of sintering and redispersion of supported metal catalysts, based on an atomic migration mechanism, are presented. The support surface was modeled as a square grid with metal atoms located at various grid points. Interaction energies between metal atoms, and between metal atoms and support sites were specified. The probability of movement of each metal atom during one time increment (iteration) was calculated from the interaction energies. The effects of interaction energies, metal loading and initial distribution of the metal were examined. The model predictions are in good qualitative agreement with experimental observations. The model predicts “apparent” movement, splitting and coalescence of entire metal particles; these experimentally observed phenomena have usually been cited as evidence that sintering occurs by a particle migration mechanism.

    Notes: To obtain good representation in the liquid-liquid critical region, a semitheoretical correction is added to a conventional expression (e.g., van Laar or NRTL) for the excess Gibbs energy of a binary or ternary system along the coexistence curve. This correction is an exponential function of a suitable distance from the critical point; it is significant in the critical region but not elsewhere. In the correction function, the preexponential factor is determined from stability considerations. In the exponential argument, two parameters are determined from theoretical power laws. While the coordinates of the critical point must be known (or estimated), no phase-equilibrium data in the critical region are required to determine parameters. The correction presented here provides an excellent approximation for phase equilibria along the coexistence curve close to and remote from critical conditions. Further, the correction facilitates simultaneous representation of isothermal vapor-liquid and liquid-liquid equilibria including the liquid-liquid critical region.

    Notes: Aqueous polymer-polymer two-phase systems provide a powerful method for separating biomolecules by extraction. When a complex mixture of biomolecules (e.g., a fermentation broth or a solution of lysed cells) is added to such a system, biomolecules partition uniquely between the two phases, achieving separation.A thermodynamic framework is presented for optimizing extraction performance in biological separations. First, a molecular-thermodynamic model, based on the osmotic virial equation, is proposed to describe phase equilibria for dilute aqueous mixtures containing polymers and protein. Second, experimental phase-equilibrium data (protein partition coefficients) are reported for a number of model proteins including albumin, lysozyme, and α-chymotrypsin. To interpret and correlate the experimental data, Low-Angle Laser-Light Scattering (LALLS) measurements were made to determine osmotic second virial coefficients for aqueous mixtures containing polymers, proteins, salts (KCl, KH2PO4 and K2SO4 at concentrations of 50 and 100 mM) and several combinations of polymer-polymer and polymer-protein pairs. Combined with electrochemical measurements (differences in potential between the two phases and protein net charge), these data provide parameters for the model to calculate the desired phase equilibria. A comparison of calculated and experimental results indicates that the virial-equation model provides good prediction of binodals and a reliable basis for estimating infinite-dilution protein partition coefficients for biotechnical process design.

    Notes: The multicomponent equilibrium theory for ion-exchange columns (chromatography) has been extended to systems accompanied by reactions in either or both phases. Based on the concept of coherence of concentration waves in the original theory, the proposed approach includes a systematic way to determine the thermodynamic variance and a general mathematical formulation to construct the composition path grid by means of numerical techniques. With proper adjustments, this approach can be applied as well to adsorption columns involving reactions. As a practical example, a comparison of predicted and observed effluent histories for an anion-exchange system with dissociation-association reactions is shown.

    Notes: The understanding of the mechanism of wall-to-bed heat and mass transfer in liquid-fluidized beds requires knowledge of the effect of the motion of individual particles on transfer processes. Experimental studies on the enhancement in mass transfer due to motion of a particle in the proximity of the transfer surface are presented. Mathematical relations based on a mechanistic model are obtained to describe the variation of the enhanced rate with time. The model parameters are correlated in terms of the particle Reynolds number, the wall-to-particle distance, and an interaction parameter that accounts for the background fluid motion. The results of this work would be of use in modeling transfer processes in other liquid-solid systems.

    Notes: Expressions suitable for the description of the behavior of small biological zwitterions in aqueous systems are developed. The validity and usefulness of the expressions are tested by correlating data for the activity coefficients of several amino acids in water. Development of rational expressions for the solid-liquid equilibria (SLE) of amino acids, in terms of the heat of solution at infinite dilution, is also presented. The solubility data of phenylalanine, tyrosine and diiodotyrosine as a function of pH are successfully correlated using the approach developed here. In addition, simultaneous correlation of the pH and temperature dependence of solubility data for diodotyrosine in water gives very good representation. The expressions described here should prove useful for the design and optimization of separation processes, such as crystallization, with minimal experimental information.
