Notes: The stability constants of the methylmercury complexes CH3HgL1-λ with a considerable number of ligands Lλ- have been determined (Table 1). Like H+, the cation CH3Hg+ reveals the coordination number 1 almost exclusively. Some ligands form also binuclear adducts (CH3Hg)2L2-λ and sulfide even forms (CH3Hg)3S+. The coordination behaviours of CH3Hg+ and H+ however are very different concerning the selection of ligands, the former being a soft and the latter a hard acid in the sense of PEARSON. The entropy ΔS of the reaction: H+ + L- → HL is more positive by about 14 c.u. than ΔS of the reaction: CH3HG+ + L- → CH3HgL. The hydrogen ion in aqueous solution has a far greater order producing action on the solvent than CH3Hg+. Two dyes also have investigated, which may serve as indicators for CH3HG+ and for the determination of pCH3Hg (= -log[CH3Hg+]).

Notes: In the course of an investigation of the BOHN-SCHMIDT reaction, cyclic bis-sulfonic esters of tetrahydroxy-anthracenes have been isolated from solutions of 1-hydroxy-, 1,4-dihydroxy-, 1,5-dihydroxy-, and 1,4,5,8-tetrahydroxy-anthraquinones in high-percent oleum. The constitution of the new compounds is confirmed by UV., IR., NMR. and mass spectra.

Notes: The fragmentation of 4-bromo-quinuclidine (7) to N,4-bis-methylene-piperidinium bromide (8) has been studied in six solvents. In 80% ethanol and in 70% dioxane 4-bromo-quinuclidine reacts 5.5 · 104 times as fast as the homomorphous compound 1-bromo-bicyclo[2.2.2]octane (9). The nitrogen atom therefore participates in the rate determining step.

Notes: The antibiotic verrucarine A (C27H34O9) yields on base catalysed hydrolysis three products: (1) the sesquiterpene alcohol verrucarol (C15H22O4) (12), (2) cis, trans-muconic acid (C6H6O4) (7), and (3) verrucarinolactone (C6H10O3) (9). The latter is the δ-lactone of the hitherto unknown trans-α, δ-dihydroxy-β-methyl-valeric acid (verrucarinic acid (16)). The absolute configuration of verrucarinolactone results from its degradation to (R)-(+)-methylsuccinic acid (21). Verrucarinolactone is a new natural isomer of mevalolactone.

Notes: The seeds of Strophanthus gratus not only contain 4-8% ouabain but also a number of other cardenolide glycosides. The following compounds have been isolated in crystalline form: sarmentoside E, sarmentoside A, acolongifloroside K, and 5 other, probably new compounds: B, δ, η, K and λ1. Three more glycosides have been isolated in the form of their crystalline O-acetyl-derivatives: O-acetyl-sarmentoloside and two probably new compounds, ∊1′ and ∊2′. In addition, the presence of the four following glycosides was demonstrated by paper chromatography and further confirmed by paper chromatography after acetylation: bipindoside, sarmentoside D, tholloside and sarhamnoloside. The structures of the new compounds have not yet been investigated.

Notes: In concentrated sulfuric acid, boric acid reacted with nine substituted 2-hydroxybenzophenones, to form fluorescent complexes. Excitation spectra indicate that these complexes are similar in structure, and fluorescence spectra show that the composition and intensity of fluorescent light depend on the electronic nature of the various substituents of the complexing agents. The optimal conditions of complex formation are investigated and the relative sensitivity of the reagents is established. All the reactants studied can be used for the determination of submicrogram quantities of boron. 2-hydroxy-4-methoxy-4′-chloro-benzophenone is the most sensitive reactant; it allows the determination of 0,00036 to 0,036 μg of boron (as boric acid) per ml (total volume: 3 ml) with a precision of ± 21% and ± 1,5%, respectively.

Notes: The infrared, far infrared and RAMAN spectra of cyclododecane and the infrared and far infrared spectra of cyclododecane-(1,1)-d2 with D2 symmetry have been measured. For the light isotopic modification a numerical normal coordinate analysis has been carried out, using the 35-constants potential for paraffins given by SCHACHTSCHNEIDER, and an automatic computer program for the calculation of the G-matrix, the normal frequencies and the normal vectors.

Notes: It is shown that the glucose residue in betanin is attached at the 5-hydroxyl group (structure 2): Treatment of betanin with diazomethane, acidic hydrolysis and acetylation afforded 5-O-acetyl-6-O-methyl-neobetanidin trimethylester (9), which was cleaved by alkali. The cleavage product was esterified with methanol and oxydized by means of FRÉMY salt to 5-hydroxy-6-methoxy-2-methoxycarbonyl-indole (15).

Notes: Des rats normaux et phlorizinés ont été traités par du ms-inositol-[U-14C] et -[2-14C]; chez le Rat normal, les radioactivités dans le CO2 expiré sont sensiblement les mêmes, ce qui implique une combustion complète de l'inositol. Chez le Rat phloriziné, il se produit une exaltation remarquable de la glucogenèse à partir de l'inositol. La radioactivité dans le CO2 expiré est alors notablement plus faible après administration d'inositol-[2-14C] qu'après celle d'inositol-[U-14C]; le rendement radioactif dans le glucose urinaire est par contre plus faible a` partir de l'inositol-[U-14C]. Ces faits, ainsi que les répartitions isotopiques observées dans le glucose urinaire, ont été discutés et expliquées.

Notes: The hitherto unknown compounds 5-(2-Pyridyl)-thiazole and 2-(N-Thioformyl-ω-aminoacetyl)-pyridine have been synthesized. The stability constants of the Cu2+-1:1-complexes of 5-(2-Pyridyl)-thiazole, 2-(2-Pyridyl)-thiazole and 4-(2-Pyridyl)-thiazole have been measured and are discussed. Evidence for the coordination of the sulphur atom in 5-(2-Pyridyl)-thiazole is given.

Notes: The crystal structure determination of cordeauxia-quinone C14H12O7 [1] (space group P1) has settled the relative positions of the substituents at the naphthazarine skeleton. Furthermore, the bond lengths seem to favour the tautomeric form of formula IV. The acetyl and methoxyl groups deviate significantly from the planarity of naphthazarine; by intermolecular hydrogen bonds between hydroxyl and acetyl groups of adjacent molecules, infinite chains are formed.

Notes: When betanin (III) was treated with S-proline (IV), a base exchange took place which produced indicaxanthin (I). In this way this yellow pigment of the cactus fruit was partially synthesized by a method which should be generally applicable for the mutual interconversion of betacyanins and betaxanthins. For it was also possible to transform indicaxanthin into betanidin (II) by a base exchange with 5,6-dihydroxy-2,3-dihydroindole-2S-carboxylic acid (V).

Notes: Aus 1,2,4-Trimethoxybenzol (I) wurde das 2-Methyl-3-acetonyl-7-methoxynaphtazarin (Isojavanicin) (XIIe) synthetisiert, wobei als entscheidende Aufbaureaktion die Einführung des Acetonylrestes durch MICHAEL-Addition von Acetessigsäure-benzylester an das 2-Methyl-5,7,8-trimethoxy-1,4-naphtochinon (VIII) erfolgte. Entgegen unseren früheren Versuchen ermöglichte die analoge Anlagerungsreaktion an 3-Methyl-5,7,8-trimethoxy-1,4-naphtochinon (XVII) eine wesentliche Vereinfachung der Synthese des Javanicins (XXa). Erwartungsgemäss zeigten Javanicin (XXa) und Isojavanicin (XIIe) in UV., IR., NMR. und Massenspektrogramm keine oder nur geringe, strukturell noch nicht interpretierbare Unterschiede, während die Mischprobe der beiden Substanzen eine überraschend grosse Schmelzpunktdepression gab.

Notes: The electron paramagnetic resonance and the optical absorption spectra of vanadyl(IV) complexes with a series of organic ligands have been investigated in aqueous solution. The g-values as well as the nuclear hyperfine splitting constants are found to be sensitive to changes of the ligands. The g-values indicate that the V=O-«double-bonding» is maintained in all the compounds examined. The experimental results further suggest that the observed isotropic 51V-hyperfine structure cannot be accounted for in terms of admixture of excited s-electrons to be b2-ground-state, but rather in terms of «polarization» of filled inner s-orbitals.

Notes: Complex formation between vanadyl(IV) ion and Tiron, and sulfosalicylic acid respectively, has been investigated by means of electron paramagnetic resonance (e.p.r.) and optical spectroscopy. The 1:1- and 1:2-complexes are distinguishable by the position of the absorption maxima in the optical absorption spectrum as well as by the parameters of the e.p.r. spectrum. There is no evidence for the existence of stable hydroxo-complexes. The influence of the ligands on the vanadium nuclear hyperfine splitting constant in the e.p.r. spectrum is discussed in terms of spin polarization.

Notes: A mixture of alpha-, beta-, and gamma-cyclodextrins is cross-linked with epichlorhydrin in alkali, giving a stable resin with glyceryl bridges between the cyclodextrin units. The resin forms specific inclusion complexes with many compounds. Isotherms of this process have been determined in aqueous solutions with benzaldehyde, aniline, p- and o-nitrophenol, pyridine, butyric acid, iodine in potassium iodide, Congo red, methylorange, and methylene blue. For comparison isotherms have also been determined with the same substances for a commercial cross-linked dextran without inclusion properties. The data illustrate a considerable ability of the cyclodextrin resin to form inclusion compounds.

In methanol rearrangement to amide with retained configuration of the migrating group is accompanied by fragmentation to predominantly inverted 2-phenyl-2-methoxy-butane. N-Alkyl-nitrilium salts are common intermediates for rearrangement and fragmentation. Since the heterolysis of N-alkyl nitrilium ions is energetically related to SN1 reactions of alkyl halogenides or alkyl esters, the stereochemical course has been interpreted in terms of DOERING's mechanistic hypothesis for endothermic SN1 reactions.

Notes: Gly8-oxytocin and Ala8-oxytocin have been synthesized according to the 3+6 scheme, and But8-oxytocin to the full recurring scheme, active esters having been used almost throughout for the formation of peptide bonds. The comparison of their biological activities with those of oxytocin, Val8-oxytocin and Ile8-oxytocin, shows that omission of the aliphatic side chain of the amino-acid in position 8 strongly depresses the activities. Nevertheless an ethyl group (But8-oxytocin) and even a methyl group (Ala8-oxytocin) are sufficient to confer to the, molecule a high degree of activity.

Notes: The bidentate N-chelates CuII-bipyridine and CuII-ethylenediamine are found to be more active in catalysis of H2O2 decomposition than the O-chelate CuII-diphosphate and the terdentate N-chelate CuII-terpyridine. This is parallelled by changes in the tendency to form ternary peroxo complexes from the respective chelates. Mechanisms and consequences of these catalytic features are discussed.

Notes: The DIELS-ALDER adduct of 1,4-naphthoquinone and 5,5-dimethoxy-1,2,3,4-tetrachlorocyclopentadiene was transformed into the di-O-acetyl-dienol (80%) which, on oxidation with chromium trioxide, gave 2,3,4-trichloranthraquinone-1-carboxylic acid methylester (72%). Sodium dithionite treatment of this compound yielded 2,3-dichloroanthraquinone-1-carboxylic acid (80%). Pyrolysis of the DIELS-ALDER adduct and the diacetyldienol, followed by oxidation, led to 2,3,4-trichloroanthraquinone-1-carboxylic acid methylester (9,5%) and 1,2,3,4-tetrachloroanthraquinone (29%), respectively.

Notes: Es wird die Isolierung einer Substanz mit stark narkosepotenzierender Wirkung, des Muscimols C4H6O2N2, Smp. 155-156°, aus dem Fliegenpilz (Amanita muscaria (L. ex FR.) HOOKER) beschrieben. Die Substanz hat salzartigen Charakter (Betain). Muscimol ist kein genuiner Inhaltsstoff des Fliegenpilzes, sondern entsteht bei der Aufarbeitung aus einer labilen Vorstufe, die ähnliche pharmakologische Wirkungen aufweist. Der Nachweis dieser Verbindungen in Papierchromatogrammen und in Elektropherogrammen wird beschrieben. Sie sprechen mit Ninhydrin gelb, mit GROTE's Reagens blau an. Als empfindliches Nachweismittel für Indole auf Papierchromatogrammen wird Phenylheptatrienal eingeführt.

Notes: At both alkaline and neutral pH, tosyl-L-arginine ethyl ester hydrolyzes slower than benzoyl arginine ester, in disaccordance with the rules of inductive effects. Glycine and sarcosine esters however behave «normally», the tosyl derivatives reacting faster than the benzoyl. Tosyl-L-arginine esters are better substrates for trypsin than the corresponding benzoyl-L-arginine esters. It is concluded that the mechanism of trypsincatalyzed ester hydrolysis (deacylation) is fundamentally different from both neutral and alkaline hydrolysis.

Notes: Oxidation and reduction properties of iron(II) and iron(III) phthalocyaninetetrasulphonic-acids are described. The reversible reaction of the iron(II) compound with molecular oxygen leads to a binuclear complex FeII · O2 · FeII. At a neutral pH no oxidation to the iron(III) state occurs. The stability of the O2-complex has been determined.
