    Notes: Summary Incremental brightness thresholds (DI) were psychophysically determined at several background illumination intensities for three squirrel monkeys. Gross asymmetrical electrodes were then chronically implanted in the lateral geniculate nucleus of the same animals, and activity was recorded in stimulus conditions identical to behavioral testing. Overall activity, recorded through an integrating voltmeter, showed 1. a tendency to decrease as steady background illumination increased, and 2. an abrupt transient increase at both onset and offset to DI test flashes, directly proportional to test flash intensity. Background illumination, in proportion to its intensity, depressed response to a superimposed test flash. Test flashes below intensity DI at the various levels of background illumination produced no measurable response. The quantity DI was shown to be a function of the depressive or inhibitory effect of background illumination on the capacity of the system to respond to transient stimulation. A secondary determinant of DI appeared to be the amount of variability in ongoing neural activity upon which the DI flash is imposed.     Notes: Summary The distribution of succinic dehydrogenase (SDA) and cytochrome oxidase (Cy. O) in serial sections of the cervical region of the spinal cord and the medulla oblongata, arranged caudo-cranially, has been described. The motor cranial nerve nuclei exhibit strong SDA and Cy. O activity in the neurons and neuropil. The nuclei gracilis, cuneatus, olivaris inferior, cochlearis and vestibularis likewise show strong enzyme activity. Nucleus intercalatus and nucleus tractus solitarius, however, show weak and moderate enzyme activity respectively. The lateral part of formatio reticularis myelencephali shows less SDA and Cy. O compared to the medial part, which shows some accumulation of these enzymes in the neuropil. The neuropil of the molecular layer of cerebellar cortex and the perikarya and dendrites of the Purkinje cells show strong SDA and Cy. O activity. The granular layer exhibits stronger SDA and Cy. O in the synaptic glomeruli. The cerebellar nuclei possess stronger enzyme activity in the neurons and dendritic branches, compared to mild activity in the neuropil.

    Notes: Summary The distribution of succinic dehydrogenase (SDA) and cytochrome oxidase (Cy. O) has been investigated in a series of sections through the pons and mesencephalon of the squirrel monkey brain. The localization of the two enzymes is very similar in the various regions and shows only slight differences. The epiphysis, however, shows moderately strong SDA and very mild Cy. O activity. Particularly strong SDA and Cy. O activity has been observed in the cell bodies of the various cranial nerve nuclei, nucleus colliculi inferioris, colliculi superioris, nuclei griseum pontis, reticularis tegmenti pontis, lemnisci lateralis pars dorsalis, geniculatum laterale and mediale, and pulvinaris. The enzyme content of the neurons and cell bodies is generally stronger compared to the neuropil which often occurs in smooth, loose, compact and reticulated forms. Any special relationship between the neurons and neuropil with regard to their enzyme content has, however, not been observed. The cranial nerves, and fibers of the brachium conjunctivum, corpus callosum, and fornix show very mild enzyme activity except those of the trapezoid complex which show moderate enzyme activity.

    Notes: In Fortführung von Arbeiten über Hydrazin und Hydrazinderivate(1-5) wurden die Reaktionen von Harnstoff H2N · CO · NH2, Semicarbazid H2N · CO · NH · NH2 und Carbohydrazid H2N · HN · CO · NH · NH2 mit Natriumhyprochlorit in neutralem und alkalischem Medium präparativ und UV-spektroskopisch untersucht.Die bekannte Reaktion zur Bildung von Hydrazin aus Harnstoff und Natriumhypochlorit in alkalischer Lösung wurde insbesondere hinsichtlich der bestehenden Annahme, daß sie nach dem HOFMANNschen Abbau verläuft, erneut diskutiert. Das als Beweis für die Bildung von N-Chlorharnstoff als ersten Reaktionsschritt nach dem HOFMANNschen Abbau angesehene Absorptionsmaximum bei 2450 Å, das durch Oxydation von Harnstoff mit tert.-Butylhypochlorit entsteht, konnte bei der Oxydation mit Natriumhypochlorit ebenfalls beobachtet werden, jedoch nur in neutralem Medium.Bei entsprechenden Oxydationsreaktionen von Semicarbazid und Carbohydrazid mit Natriumhypochlorit traten im Bereich von 2000-3000 Å keine Absorptionen auf, die auf entstandene N--Cl-Bindungen hindeuten könnten. Ein möglicher Reaktionsverlauf bei der Oxydation dieser beiden Verbindungen in alkalischem Medium über intermediär gebildetes Triazan und Tetrazan wird angegeben.Nach einer bisher noch nicht beschriebenen Methode konnten Hydrazindicarbonsäurediamid H2N · CO · HN · NH · CO · NH2 und das primäre Natriumsalz der Cyanursäure NaC3H2N3O3 · H2O durch Oxydation von Semicarbazid bzw. Harnstoff in neutraler Lösung mit Natriumhypochlorit dargestellt werden.

    Notes: Sol-gel transformation of mixed gels of silica, alumina and ferric oxide has been studied by determining the variations in pH with time of dialysis. For silica-alumina mixtures a pH of 2.9 is invariably reached irrespective of the alumina content of the mixtures. The amount of alumina present in the mixture influences the time of setting of the gel to a very great extent and it decreases with increase of the alumina content of the mixtures. These results have been explained in light of chemical interaction between the two gels to give aluminosilicates as well as in terms of controlled coagulation phenomenon with alumina behaving as a foreign electrolyte for bringing about the gelation of silicic acid.The results of silicic acid, ferric oxide gel forming mixtures are altogether different. In this case the time of gelation increases with the increase in the amount of ferric oxide in the gelation mixture, while a pH of 4.2 is reached irrespective of the amount of ferric oxide present. No evidence for the formation of ferric-silicate is obtained nor the gelation of these mixed sols can be explained in terms of controlled coagulation.The colloidal silica appears to act as protective colloid for the highly acedic ferric oxide sol. Viscometric and pH metric studies on the addition of alumina sol to mixtures of ferric oxide and silica sols indicate that alumina competes with ferric oxide in the formation of mixed gels. Here, too a pH of 2.9 is invariably reached irrespective of the alumina content in the mixed gels.

    Notes: Es werden die Synthesen von 2 homologen Reihen des 3-Hydroxy-2,5-diphenyl-pyrazins und 2-Benzoyl-4(5)-phenyl-imidazols beschrieben. p-n-Alkyl- und p-n-Alkoxyphenylglyoxal-hydrate kondensieren unter ammoniakalischen Bedingungen bevorzugt zu den entsprechenden Imidazolylketonen und nur in geringen Ausbeuten zu Hydroxypyrazinen. Die Alkylhomologen des Pyrazins schmelzen ab Äthylderivat zu kristallin-flüssigen Phasen auf, die dem smektischen Typ angehören. Mit wachsenden Flügelgruppen treten Umwandlungspunkte in diesen Phasen auf. Die beiden ersten Glieder der Ätherreihe haben zusätzlich einen nematischen Bereich. Allen Imidazolylketonen fehlen diese Eigenschaften. Der Einfluß der α-ständigen Hydroxygruppe am heterocyclischen Mittelstück der gestreckten Molekeln wird diskutiert.

Die erforderlichen Protonen werden in einer Nebenreaktion von Redoxcharakter geliefert. Partielle Veresterungsprodukte des Tris-(β-hydroxy-äthyl)-amins setzen sich mit Kupfer(II)-salzen zu Koordinationsverbindungen von z. T. innerkomplexem Charakter um. Die Strukturen der dargestellten Verbindungen werden diskutiert.

Aqueous solution of the uranyl nitrate and thorium nitrate were prepared in such a way that the concentration of uranyl nitrate was kept constant, while that of thorium nitrate was varied systematically, and the physico-chemical properties recorded. When the values are plotted against the concentration of thorium nitrate curves are obtained with the specific breaks. The kink occurs at exact stoichiometric ratio of the concentrations corresponding to the compound noted above.

    Notes: Experiments with the system Uranyl nitrate-Lanthanum nitrate-water viz., Conductance, pH, and spectrophotometry revealed the existence of the following compounds in solution. \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm (1)\,\, La(NO}_{\rm 3} {\rm)}_{\rm 3} - {\rm UO}_{\rm 2} ({\rm NO}_{\rm 3} )_2 {\rm \quad\quad(2)\,\,2La(NO}_{\rm 3} {\rm)}_{\rm 3} - {\rm UO}_{\rm 2} ({\rm NO}_{\rm 3})_2 $$\end{document} A set of 22 mixed solutions was prepared by following Nayar and Pande's monovariation method1. In all the solutions the concentration of uranyl nitrate was kept constant (i. e. M/200), while that of lanthanum nitrate varied systematically from 0.0M to 0.021M. The physico-chemical properties, namely conductivity, pH, and spectrophotometry were used for the investigation of complex-compounds in the above system. When these values are plotted against the varying concentration of Lanthanum nitrate two breaks were obtained in the regular curves at concentrations corresponding to the compounds having the above formulae. The results obtained by all these physico-chemical properties are in excellent agreement leading to the same conclusions.

    Notes: Die Umsetzung von 2,4-Dinitro-phenyl-pyridiniumchlorid und 2,4-Dinitro-phenyl-isochinoliniumchlorid mit heterocyclischen Hydrazinen führt zu den entsprechenden Hydrazonen des 1-[2,4-Dinitro-anilino]-pentadien-(1,3)-als-(5) bzw. β-[2,4-Dinitro-anilino]-o-styroaldehyds. Durch Erhitzen der Hydrazone in Eisessig bzw. alkohol. Salzsäure erfolgt Ringschluß zu Pyridinium- bzw. Isochinolinium-betainen, die zur 1,3-dipolaren Addition befähigt sind und mit geeigenten Dipolaphilen zu Pyrazolo [1,5-a]pyridinen bzw. Pyrazolo-[5,1-a]isochinolinen cyclisieren.

    Notes: Im System Nd2O3-Yb2O3 tritt innerhalb eines relativ großen Bereiches Mischkristallbildung ein. Dies konnte durch Präzisionsbestimmung der Gitterkonstanten der einzelnen Mischoxide sowie durch Phasenbetrachtungen bewiesen werden. Bei der Untersuchung der Yb2O3-reichen Seite wurde eine Abhängigkeit der Mischbarkeitsgrenze von der Glühtemperatur gefunden und gedeutet. Die Mischkristalle der Yb2O3-reichen Seite weisen C-Sesquioxidstruktur (D53-Typ) auf. Die Untersuchung der Nd2O3-reichen Seite erfolgte unter Bedingungen, die das Auftreten des Nd2O3 im kubischen C-Typ gewährleisten. Auch hier konnte erhebliche Mischbarkeit nachgewiesen werden.

    Notes: Aus einer wäßrigen Lösung von monomerem DL-Glycerinaldehyd wird durch Reaktion mit N,N-Bis-(β-chloräthyl)-hydrazin in schwach alkalischem Medium das entsprechende Hydrazon in nicht analysenreinem Zustand gewonnen. DL-Glycerinaldehyd wie auch sein Diäthylacetal bilden dagegen beim Erhitzen mit N,N-Bis-(β-chloräthyl)-hydrazin-hydrochlorid in methanolischer Lösung in mäßiger Ausbeute β-[N,N-Bis-(β-chloräthyl)-hydrazino]-acrolein-N,N-bis-(β-chloräthyl)-hydrazon-hydrochlorid (I), dessen Struktur durch Synthese aus β-Äthoxy-acrolein-diäthylacetal und N,N-Bis-(β-chloräthyl)-hydrazin-hydrochlorid bewiesen wurde. Zur Bildung von I wird eine Dehydratisierung des Glycerinaldehyds bzw. seines Acetals unter Eliminierung der α-ständigen OH-Gruppe angenommen, wobei intermediär β-Hydroxyacrolein bzw. ein Derivat davon entsteht. Methylglyoxal, das bisher als einziges Dehydratisierungsprodukt des Glycerinaldehyds bekannt ist (Eliminierung der β-ständigen OH-Gruppe), und auch 1,3-Dihydroxyaceton liefern unter gleichen Bedingungen kein I. Dagegen tritt, besonders stark bei der Umsetzung mit Dihydroxyaceton, eine Spaltung der N-N-Bindung des Hydrazin-Lostes ein.

    Notes: In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurde die Reaktionsfähigkeit der beiden Methylengruppen im 2,5-Diketopiperazin durch die Umsetzung mit aromatischen, heterocyclischen und aliphatischen Aldehyden eingehend untersucht. Dabei konnte festgestellt werden, daß auch aliphatische Aldehyde mit in Nachbarschaft zur C=O-Bindung stehenden aktivierenden Gruppen mit 2,5-Diketopiperazin reagieren. Ebenfalls war es möglich, Nitrosoverbindungen auf diese Weise zur Umsetzung zu bringen. Einige Benzylidenderivate wurden reduktiv in die entsprechenden Benzylderivate überführt.

    Notes: Acht verschiedene Alkylazide wurden bei Temperaturen zwischen 350 und 410°C im Argonstrom zersetzt; die mittlere Verweilzeit betrug 5-10 sec. Die primär gebildeten Alkylnitrene stabilisieren sich vorzugsweise unter 1,2-Hydridverschiebung, daneben treten in geringerem Ausmaß 1,2-Umlagerungen unter Wanderung einer Alkylgruppe auf. Bei der Zersetzung von tert.-Butylazid, wo eine 1,2-Hydridverschiebung nicht möglich ist, wird die nucleophile 1,2-Umlagerung unter Wanderung einer Methylgruppe zur Hauptreaktion. Intramolekulare C-H-Einschiebungsreaktionen unter Bildung von Pyrrolidinderivaten konnten nicht nachgewiesen werden. Intramolekulare C-H-Einschiebungen unter Bildung von Aziridinen traten in geringem Umfang bei der Zersetzung von Isobutyl- und tert.-Butylazid, in beträchtlichem Maße bei der Zersetzung von Äthylazid auf.Bei der Gasphasepyrolyse in Gegenwart von Cyclohexan wurden dieselben Produkte erhalten wie bei der reinen Azid-Pyrolyse. Eine intermolekulare C-H-Einschiebung unter Bildung der entsprechenden Cyclohexylamine ließ sich bei Einsatz von Stickstoffwasserstoffsäure, von Methylazid und von n-Butylazid nachweisen.Das bei der Autoklav-Pyrolyse von p-Toluolsulfonylazid in Cyclohexan entstehende Nitren reagiert zu 20% unter intermolekularer C-H-Einschiebung zu N-Cyclohexyl-ptoluolsulfonamid.

Ausgehend von dieser Zwischenstufe können durch Reaktion mit einem zweiten Molekül Arylisothiocyanat Dithiomalonsäurediamide dargestellt werden, deren N-Atome ungleich durch Arylreste substituiert sind. Derartige Verbindungen werden auch durch Umsetzen eines Gemisches zweier Senföle mit Natriumacetylaceton erhalten.

Aus dem experimentellen Material wird eine Theorie über die Strukturen der verankerten Komplexe und die Ursache der spezifischen Eigenschaften entwickelt. Die Verwertbarkeit dieser Ergebnisse liegt auf analytischem und metallurgischem Gebiet.

    Notes: Definierte höhere Alkyl-aluminium-chloride lassen sich nicht durch Reaktion der entsprechenden Alkylchloride mit Aluminium gewinnen, sondern man erhält sie, indem man höhere Trialkyl-aluminium-Verbindungen mit Aluminiumchlorid in Lösungsmittelsuspension umsetzt. Je nach den Molverhältnissen können Dialkyl-aluminium-monochloride, Alkyl-aluminium-dichloride oder sog. „Alkyl-aluminium-sesquichloride“ erhalten werden. Ausgehend von Triisobutylaluminium oder Diisobutyl-aluminium-hydrid wurden mit α-Olefinen Tri-n-alkyl-aluminium-Verbindungen dargestellt und mit Aluminiumchlorid in den Molverhältnissen 2:1 und 1:2 umgesetzt. Es wird über Darstellung, Eigenschaften und IR-Spektren von n-Hexyl-, n-Octyl- und n-Decylaluminium-chloriden berichtet.

Die Reaktionsprodukte sollten durch Dünnschichtchromatographie und mittels der Infrarotspektroskopie untersucht sowie UV-spektroskopisch charakterissiert werden.Die neuartigen Alkohole, Thiole und Amine ergaben unter Addition an Isocyanate Carbaminsäureester, Carbaminsäurethioester und substituierte Harnstoffe.

Offenbar handelt es sich um einen E-1-Mechanismus.

    Notes: Nach Feststellung der Verfasser wird bei der photochemischen Oxydation des Furfurol-diäthylacetals zunächst der Furanring abgebrochen und dann die Diäthylacetalgruppe eliminiert, wobei der ψ-Ester der Maleinaldehydsäure entsteht. Beim Furfurol-divinylacetal jedoch bleibt die Eliminierung der Acetalgruppe aus, da die nach vorausgegangenem Furanringabbruch entstandene Verbindung polymerisiert.Ferner wird aufgezeigt, daß das aus dem ψ-Ester der Maleinaldehydsäure entstandene Oxim in der Tat ein Oxim der Fumaraldehydsäure ist.

    Notes: Es wurden die 1:1-Chelate von N,N′-Bis-(pyridin-2-al)äthylendiimin (PAen) mit Sm(III), Eu(III) und Tb(III) als Nitrate dargestellt. Aus den IR-Spektren folgt, daß sowohl der Pyridin- als auch der Azomethinstickstoff und die Nitratgruppen im festen Zustand koordinieren. Diese Aussagen werden durch die Aufnahme der Fluoreszenzspektren an den festen Chelaten und Vergleich mit den ebenfalls untersuchten 1:2-Phenanthrolin-(Phen) bzw. α,α′-Dipyridyl(Dip) Komplexen sowie durch die Temperaturabhängigkeit der Fluoreszenz erhärtet.

    Notes: Es werden sieben verschiedene Verfahren zur Synthese des Iminodiessigsäure-Chelatharzes (= IDE-HARZ) hinsichtlich ihrer Nebenreaktionen und der Einfluß dieser Nebenreaktionen auf die Eigenschaften der resultierenden IDE-HARZE untersucht. Der einzige Syntheseweg, der dieses Chelatharz in analysenreiner Qualität liefert, ist zur Zeit die Umsetzung von chlormethylierten, vernetzten Polystyrolperlen mit Iminodiessigsäureester und nachfolgender Verseifung der Estergruppen. Dieses p. a. IDE-HARZ wurde mit DOWEX CHELATING RESIN A-1 verglichen und festgestellt, daß DOWEX A-1 außer Iminodiessigsäure-Ankergruppen noch verankerte Amino- und Aminosäure-Ankergruppen enthält. Beide Nebenankergruppen beteiligen sich an der Komplexbildung. Im starksauren Gebiet fungieren die Amino-Ankergruppen außerdem als Anionenaustauscher. DOWEX A-1, das um 1960 in den Handel gelangte, besitzt einen beträchtlichen Anteil an Amino- und Amino- säure-Ankergruppen. Dagegen enthält DOWEX A-1, das 1963/64 produziert wurde, vorwiegend Iminodiessigsäure- und Aminosäure-Ankergruppen. Der reversible Kapazitätsschwund des DOWEX A-1 kann mit der Ausbildung von Lactambindungen erklärt werden.

    Notes: Für irreversibel reduzierbare Komplexe, deren Stabilitätskonstanten nicht aus der Verschiebung der polarographisch gemessenen Halbstufenpotentiale bestimmt werden können, lassen sich auf einfache und schnelle Weise durch polarographische Messungen der Austauschgleichgewichte mit einem zusätzlichen Komplexbildner relative Stabilitätskonstanten ermitteln. Am Beispiel der Kupferkomplexe von 8-Oxychinolin, Nitrilotriessigsäure und Äthylendiamintetraessigsäure wird gezeigt, daß durch Zusatz organischer Solvenzien Stufenüberlagerungen vermieden werden, weil die Kupfernitritriacetat- und Kupferäthylen-diamintetraacetatstufen soweit irreversibel verschoben werden, daß eine polarographische Bestimmung der Gleichgewichtskonzentrationen möglich ist. Ein Übergang von wäßrigem Milieu zu Wasser-Solvens-Gemischen erweitert wesentlich die Anwendungsmöglichkeiten für polarographische Untersuchungen von Komplexen.

Hauptprodukte sind die Azine von ω-Formylfettsäureestern. Dagegen entstehen beim Cu-katalysierten Zerfall ungesättigte Ester mit endständiger Doppelbindung als Hauptprodukte, beim photolytischen Zerfall Dicarbonsäureester mit mittelständiger Doppelbindung. Das Produktverhältnis wird durch die Anwesenheit von Cyclohexen nicht beeinflußt.

    Notes: Die Selten-Erd-Titanate der allgemeinen Formel SETiO3 (SE: La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm, Eu Gd) wurden magnetochemisch mittels der Gouyschen Methode bei Zimmertemperatur vermessen. Dabei wurden im Falle der Titanate mit 4 f-Ionen Suszeptibilitätswerte gefunden, die sich von denen der Sesquioxide sehr wenig unterschieden, während LaTiO3 in seinem magnetischen Verhalten abweicht. Die Suszeptiblitätswerte bestätigen die Formulierung EuIITiIVO3 für Europiumtitanat und SEIIITiIIIO3 für die übrigen Selten-Erd-Titanate. Auf mögliche ferromagnetische und antiferromagnetische Eigenschaften dieser Verbindungen wird hingewiesen.

    Notes: In der vorliegenden Arbeit wurden 1-[Bicyclo-(2,2,1)-hept-5-enyl-(2)]-alkanole sowie 1-[Bicyclo-(2,2,1)-heptyl-(2)]-alkanole dargestellt und die nach verschiedenen Methoden gewonnenen Verbindungen auf ihre endo-exo-Isomerenzusammensetzung untersucht. Zur Darstellung eignen sich Umsetzungen von bicyclischen Aldehyden nach Grignard sowie die Reduktion von Ketonen und Estern. Die Reduktion von Aldehyden führt zu 2,5-Methylen-1,2,5,6-tetrahydrobenzylalkohol bzw. 2,5-Methylen-hexahydrobenzylalkohol.Die Veresterung obiger Alkohole mit Chloriden und Anhydriden von Mono- und Dicarbonsäuren liefert Verbindungen, die pharmakologische Wirkung erwarten lassen.Versuche zur Ermittlung einer eventuellen relativen Reaktionsgeschwindigkeit endo-exo-isomerer Alkohole wurden durchgeführt.

The triterpenes result from dienisation of β-farnesenes or α-farnesenes with β-farnesenes, or dimerization of allofarnesenes.

    Notes: The essential characteristics of a simple, discontinuous model system for mass transfer between two phases are discussed. It is shown that for dyeing processes that conform to this model it is possible, with the aid of the methods of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, to give an unambiguous definition of the concepts «rate of dyeing» and «affinity of dyeing», at any stage of dyeing. It is clear from the derived phenomenological equations that dyeing systems rarely reach a true equilibrium state (i.e. a stationary state of zero order), but that in general an osmotic or a DONNAN equilibrium is attained.

    Notes: The selective cleavage of the N-sulphenyl protecting group from amino-acids and peptides containing additional acid-labile protecting residues has been investigated. Among various nucleophilic reagents tested for their ability to effect rapid and specific removal of the N-sulphenyl groups, hydrogen cyanide, sulfurous acid and thioacetamide have been found to be particularly suitable. The application of this method to the solid phase synthesis of peptides is described and discussed.

    Notes: A new procedure for the resolution of DL-proline, DL-alanine and DL-isoleucine into the optical antipodes is outlined. It is based on the separation of diastereoisomeric salts of D- or L-tyrosine hydrazide with Z-DL-proline, Z-DL-alanine and Z-DL-isoleucine, by means of fractional crystallization in suitable solvents such as lower aliphatic alcohols and water. It is shown that the new method gives excellent yields even with half the molar amount of the optically active resolving agent.
