Notes: The optimization of the separation of eight aromatic carboxylic acids, using Hypersil SAS and MOS reverse phase columns, with respect to eluent (methanol : water) composition, pH, and temperature, is described. Window diagram techniques are used and the pH of the aqueous buffer and elution temperature are shown to be more critical than eluent composition.

Notes: The direct determination of the enantiomeric purity of halocarboxylic acids is described. The method used involves gas chromatographic separation of the corresponding tert-butylamides on deactivated glass or fused-silica capillaries coated with Chirasil-Val. Both the influence of the amide moiety on enantiomeric resolution and tailing, and the racemization during formation of the amide derivatives were studied.

Notes: A method is described for the determination of 1-nitropyrene in a diesel exhaust particulate extract by thin-layer chromatography. 1-Nitropyrene is determined as 1-aminopyrene after prechromatographic reduction and isolation by solvent partition. The fluorescence response of 1-aminopyrene is approximately 1000-fold greater than that of 1-nitropyrene. The poor fluorescence stability of 1-aminopyrene on silica gel plates prevents in situ detection by scanning densitometry unless the plates are impregnated with a mixture of 2,6-di-tert-butyl-4-methylphenol and Fomblin H-Vac. A linear response from 1 to 150 ng of 1-aminopyrene and a detection limit of 1.0 ng were obtained using the impregnated plates. For fourteen samples of a diesel exhaust particulate extract the concentration of 1-nitropyrene was determined to be 165 μg/g with an RSD = 9.0%. No significant interferences were observed from other nitro- or aminopolycyclic aromatic compounds present in the extract.

Notes: Kováts retention indices for a series of linear, branched, and cyclic alkanes on squalane at any temperature, and on other stationary phases of different polarity at a given temperature, are related to physicochemical properties of the solutes, such as boiling point and molar refraction, by multiple regression analysis. The equations found permit calculation of the Kováts retention index for all alkanes, with standard deviations close to experimental error. The same equations can also be used for calculating the physicochemical parameters they contain.

Notes: This paper describes the theory of liquid adsorption chromatography (LSC) with mixed mobile phase, involving formation of multilayer surface phases. An equation describing the dependence of the capacity ratio upon the mobile phase composition is derived and theoretical curves illustrating the same dependence are calculated accordingly by assuming different thicknesses of the surface phase.

Notes: Fused silica capillary columns with internal diameters from 100 to 25 μm were coated with SE-54 and evaluated under supercritical fluid chromatographic conditions using carbon dioxide as mobile phase. Experimental results compared well with theoretical predictions. At ten times the optimum mobile phase velocity and for a capacity factor, k of 3, efficiencies of 2300 to 5600 plates m-1 were obtained for column diameters of 100 to 25 μm, respectively.

Notes: Capillary columns having a thick liquid phase film and a low phase ratio permit the separation of low molecular mass compounds which would have a very small capacity factor on columns with a classical thin film. At the same time, the increased sample capacity allows conventional hot-wire thermal conductivity detectors to be used with such columns. The analysis of natural and refinery gases, containing both inorganic compounds and light (C1—C7) hydrocarbons, utilizing a combination of hot-wire and flame ionization detectors, is demonstrated.

Notes: An HETP equation for the capillary column is developed that takes into account the dependence of gaseous diffusion on pressure, the compressibility of the mobile phase, together with the unique relationship between mobile phase velocity, and the resistance to mass transfer in the stationary phase. The equation is used to develop a procedure for column optimization and expressions are derived that allow the optimum column radius and optimum column length to be calculated for a given fixed inlet pressure. It is shown that fast, simple separations are optimally achieved using relatively short small diameter columns. Conversely, optimum performance for the separation of complex mixtures requiring higher efficiencies requires the use of long columns with relatively large diameters.

Experimental results compared well with theoretical predictions. There was no significant difference in hmin or ūopt for film thicknesses from 0.25 to 1.0 μm over k = 1 to 5. At a film thickness of 1.0 μm, calculations indicate that approximately 10% resolution loss would be expected for solutes with k = 1.

Notes: A method for the quantitation of retinol in serum by normal phase high performance liquid chromatography is described. The mobile phase consists of a hexane/diethylether/methanol mixture with spectrophotometric detection. The sample preparation is similar to that described by other authors and involves protein precipitation followed by extraction and direct injection onto the chromatograph. Adequate sensitivity is achieved using 200 μl samples. The internal standard chosen is α-naphthol because of its spectral similarities to retinol and its greater stability than the commonly used retinyl esters. The method has been successfully applied to the clinical evaluation of a number of malabsorption syndromes for which it is preferred to the measurement of total carotenoids.

Notes: A method is described for quantitative determination of phospholipids of mitochondria following one-dimensional thin-layer chromatography without previous elution. Using high performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) and an in situ fluorescence technique, the time needed for quantitative determination is relatively short. As the method is rather sensitive, small amounts of the extracts can be applied (about 200 ng of total phospholipids per spot). The reproducibility for the phospholipid fractions determined was in the range of 8-17%. The procedure was tested with lipid extracts of rat liver mitochondria. The method allows the determination of cardiolipin, phosphatidyl ethanolamine, phosphatidyl inositol, phosphatidyl choline, and sphingomyelin.

Notes: Sugars were separated gas chromatographically on short apolar glass capillary columns by using cold, on-column injection (OCI) techniques. After silylation, oligomers up to the hexasaccharides could be efficiently separated in resonable retention times. Response factors of silylated sugars were determined as a function of varying sample amounts and concentrations. The optimum injection amount was found to be 1 μl in heptane as solvent.

Notes: The purge and trap (P&T) method of analysis has been interfaced with fused silica capillary column gas chromatography. This interfacing has been accomplished without splitting the P&T trap desorption carrier gas. Thus, 100% of the purged compounds are transferred to the column. The analytes are cryofocussed on the column using whole column cryotrapping (WCC) at -80°C. The resulting P&T/WCC procedure is extremely well-suited to the analysis of trace purgeable aqueous organic compounds. Samples and standards containing a variety of aromatic standard compounds were analyzed. The standards included benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylenes, C3-C4-benzenes, and naphthalene, as well as three P&T internal standard compounds. Chromatographic peak widths were uniformly less than 6 s at the base and excellent precision was obtained in the relative retention time data for all compounds. The chromatogram of a groundwater sample contaminated with aromatic gasoline compounds is also presented. Since P&T/WCC works well with fused silica capillary columns, the full sensitivity and chromatographic efficiency of capillary gas chromatography is made available to P&T analyses.

Notes: For optimization of liquid chromatography separations, several approaches have been reported, among them the use of the hydrophobic fragmental constant, as proposed by Rekker [1]. The fragmental constant is derived from the partition coefficients of various solutes between octanol and water and represents a summation of solubility parameters: van der Waals volume, π - π interactions, hydrogen bonding, etc. With these constants the optimization of reversed phase mode liquid chromatography using octadecyl bonded silica gels as packing was feasible, although large error was found for the eluent with a high concentration of organic modifier or water. This is probably due to the heterogeneous solvation of the surface of the packings and to various solvent effects. In addition, when the acid dissociation constant was known, the retention times of aromatic acids in the ionic form were also predicted using the hydrophobic fragmental constant and the dissociation constant. By comparison of the previous data and a method proposed by Perrin et al. [2] it was possible to predict the dissociation constant of aromatic acids and optimize separation in reversed phase mode liquid chromatography using octadecyl bonded silica gels as packing. Furthermore, an equation for calculating the capacity ratios in a given pH eluent was proposed and the predicted and observed capacity ratios of aromatic acids in several eluents were examined in order to improve the above system.

Notes: Methyl-2-phenylethylpolysiloxane polymers have been synthesized for comparison with methylphenylpolysiloxane stationary phases for gas chromatography. The 50% 2-phenylethyl polysiloxane was found to be autocrosslinkable at 260°C without addition of free redical initiator. Although the selectivity of this phase appears to be similar to the 50% phenyl polysiloxane, its thermal stability is not as high.

Notes: A terminal band length is defined here as the length of a dispersed solute band as it emerges from the chromatographic column. The number of terminal band lengths per column can be used in the same way that the number of theoretical plates per column is used to measure and compare chromatographic efficiencies, but with greater insight since the proposed unit of measure is an easily visualized, real entity. In addition, the height equivalent to a theoretical plate (HETP) can be regarded as a ratio of the terminal band lenght to sixteen times the number of equivalent terminal band lengths that could be contained in tandem in the column. This concept offers another approach to understanding the meaning of the term, HETP. The terminal band length of a series of homologues is constant and independent of retention time above a certain solute molecular size and column capacity ratio. Within those conditions the correlation between the recorded peak width and retention time during isothermal analysis occurs primarily as a result of change in solute velocity.

Notes: It is proposed to extend the area of application of circular separation of substances in flat-bed chromatography by a wider use of its intermedial modifications. Equations for calculating the basic parameters of migration of the mobile phase and zones of separated substances are given. The known equations are shown to be particular cases of the ones proposed.

Notes: The stationary-phase capacity concepts derived from linear capacity are discussed in connection with the needs of analytical, trace enrichment analysis and preparative chromatography and shown to be unsuited to them. A new concept based on stationary-phase saturation and called “available capacity” is proposed. It generalizes the ion-exchanger exchange capacity to adsorption and partition chromatography when the sampling solvent is the mobile phase. In linear elution chromatography the available capacity is proportional to the solute concentration Co and to the analytical capacity factor k′ for given Co and k′ values, it is independent of the nature of the solute. Furthermore, when both the concentrations and the analytical capacity factors (practically, for Co ≥ 1 M and k′ ≥ 10, respectively) are high, the available capacity reaches a value roughly independent of Co and k′, called “maximum available capacity” and related only to the number of sites available on the stationary phase. Numerous measurements were made in ion-exchange, adsorption, and reversed-phase chromatography. For solutes having a single polar functional group interacting with the stationary phase, the orders of magnitude of the maximum available capacity are 1.2 mmole g-1 for a classical silica gel (Partisil 5 μm, 400m-2 g-1 with a water content of 2.7%); 1.8 mmole g-1 for the Lichroprep RP 8 octyl bonded silica (11.6% carbon content); 3.8 mmole g-1 for an anion exchanger resin of Dowex type.

Notes: The effect of temperature, water content, and the type of reagent on the silylation of fused silica capillaries was studied by 29Si and 13C CP-MAS NMR. Fumed silica (Cab-O-Sil M5), which is essentially a highly dispersed vitreous quartz with a surface comparable to that of fused silica capillary columns, was selected as a model material.Hexamethyldisilazane (HMDS) and 1,2-diphenyl-1,1,3,3-tetraphenyldisilazane (DPTMDS), which were used as silylation reagents, yielded trimethyl- and dimethylphenylsilyl surface groups respectively at lower temperatures (〈 350°C and 〈250°C respectively). At higher temperatures, increasingly more dimethylsilyl groups are formed, with the silicon bound to two oxygen atoms. This process occurs for DPTMDS at a considerably lower temperature than for HMDS. The formation of silyl groups on the surface and the disappearance of hydroxyl groups are followed independently. The 13C NMR and GC-MS of the reaction products showed that with DPTMDS, the formation of two Si-O-Si links is accompanied by a loss of phenyl groups rather than of methyl groups. After the Cab-O-Sil had been dried over P2O5, the formation of these double links occurred for HMDS only at temperatures above 460°C and for DPTMDS at 400°C. Thus we concluded that water supplies oxygen atoms for double Si-O-Si links (possibly crosslinks) necessary for efficient deactivation. This may explain the less successful silanization of fused silica capillaries because their water content is lower than that of glass capillaries.

Notes: Trace amounts of a dibenzothiophene (DBT) series in complex matrices were detected by gas chromatography with flame photometric detection (FPD) after purification and isolation by normal-phase high performance liquid chromatography. The gas chromatographic behavior of eleven methylated DBTs was studied on six common stationary phases. Complete resolution of the four monomethyl DBT isomers was only achieved on a capillary column coated with a methylphenylsilicone phase gummified in situ by heat-curing.The determination of the relative distribution of the four monomethylated isomers is proposed as a powerful method for monitoring oil pollution in marine environment.

Notes: Complex organic mixtures, such as coal liquefaction and oil shale products and by-products, are comprised of hundreds or thousands of individual components. State-of-the-art high resolution gas chromatography does not always provide sufficient resolution to allow accurate quantitation or identification of many compounds of interest. The concept of dual capillary column chromatography combines the different resolving characteristics of two capillary columns coated with different stationary phases into a single chromatographic run. In this approach, both columns are connected to the same injection port. Analysis of complex mixtures in this fashion can confirm the identification and quantitation of components on two columns of different polarity with little increased analysis time, can provide a means of obtaining quantitative data for individual components which are known to coelute on any one column, and can alert one to unknown coelution problems that would be undetected by gas chromatographic analysis on a single capillary column.Simultaneous dual column analysis was applied to three samples, the neutral polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) fraction of a Solvent Refined Coal-II (SRC-II) heavy distillate, the nitrogen-containing polycyclic aromatic compound (N-PAC) fraction of an SRC-II heavy distillate, and the basic fraction from a shale oil process water. Fused silica capillary columns coated with SE-54 and Durawax 3 were used for the analyses of the heavy distillate, while SE-54 an Carbowax 20M capillary columns were used for the analysis of the process water.

Notes: A crosslinkable biphenylmethylpolysiloxane stationary phase was synthesized for capillary column gas chromatography and compared with methyl, phenyl, and cyanopropyl polysiloxane stationary phases for the separation of isomeric polycyclic aromatic compounds. While the new phase gave similar separations of nonpolar isomers when compared to the nonpolar phases, separations of polar isomers were greatly improved because of the induced polarity of the biphenyl group of the stationary phase by the solute molecules. This polarizable stationary phase offers a unique selectivity which is not available in other stationary phases.

Notes: A conventional splitless injector is used as a pyrolysis chamber or chemical reactor for the N-demethylation of acetylcholine and other choline esters. The novel uses of 2-aminoethanol as a N-demethylation reagent in splitless injection and bonded-phase fused silica capillary columns in the separation of the tertiary amine derivatives of choline esters are described. A comparison is made between non-polar and moderately polar fused silica capillary columns in the separation of choline esters.

Notes: The environmentally hazardous organic substances in the waste water from the manufacture of chlorophenoxyalkanoic acids have been identified and semiquantified before and after passing through a biological treatment plant for municipal sewage, the secondary effluent of which is discharged into a marine ecosystem. The organics belong to three groups: (i) chlorophenols; (ii) chlorophenoxyalkanoic acids; and (iii) chlorinated neutrals. The removal of chlorophenols and phenoxyalkanoic acids was shown to be good, with a 90% overall reduction of chlorinated substances in the sewage passing through the treatment plant. The lowest reduction occurred for the polychlorinated compounds. Two chlorobenzofurans among the chlorinated neutrals were preliminarily identified.

Notes: Although chlorinated paraffins (CP) are produced in large amounts (300 000 tonnes per year), little is known about their occurrence in the environment due to the lack of specific and sensitive analytical methods. The present paper describes the GC/MS analysis of different CP's using capillary gas chromatography with on-column injection and negative ion chemical ionization (NCI) mass spectrometry. Chromatographic resolution of groups of isomers and homologues was obtained. The chromatograms and mass spectra are discussed. The suitability of this method for trace analysis of a CP sample using multiple ion detection (MID) is described.

Notes: Enantiomeric amide derivatives of (S)- and (R)-1-phenyl-2-aminopropane (dextro- and levoamphetamine, respectively) were resolved by high performance liquid chromatography on commercially available ionically and covalently bonded chiral stationary phases ((R)-N-(3,5-dinitrobenzoyl)phenylglycine). Ten enantiomeric amide pairs were synthesized and chromatographed on the columns by using a mobile phase of hexane-isopropanol (97 : 3), a flow rate of 2 ml/min, and a column temperature of 20°C. The (R)-isomer of all 10 amides eluted first on the covalent column as did the (R)-isomer of nine derivatives on the ionic column. however, the 3,5-dinitrobenzoyl amide of (S)- amphetamine eluted before the (R)-isomer on the ionic column. This reversal in enantiomeric elution order reveals the complexity of the interactions occurring on these columns and emphasizes the hazards of relying on observed elution order as an a priori indication of absolute configuration.

Notes: The possibility of high-speed micro-HPLC has been investigated using a short micro-column (35 mm × 0.5 mm i.d.) packed with 3 μm ODS particle. The results indicate that this approach has considerable potential for good separations with short analysis time. A typical example shows only three minutes is required with a plate count of 3,800 to separate seven PAHs.

Notes: Gas chromatography (GC) with electron capture detection (ECD), GC combined with mass spectrometry (MS), GC with multi-stage mass spectometry (MS-MS), and direct inlet MS-MS have been used to determine 1,1-dichlorodimethyl sulfone (DDS) in aquatic organisms in the receiving waters outside a pulp mill bleach plant. Both GC-MS-MC and direct inlet MS-MS of tissue extracts of fish and mussel appear to be sensitive, selective, and rapid analytical techniques for the determination of DDS.

Notes: A method is described which allows the determination of different substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) such as NO2-PAH, carbazoles, keto-PAH, and aza-arenes in aerosol samples. Liquid CO2-extraction is used to minimize the loss of reactive compounds. High performance liquid chromatography on chemically activated silica is employed to prefractionate the samples into subfractions with a minimum of overlap between different PAH compound classes. Both electron capture detection and negative ion chemical ionization combined with capillary gas chromatography are used for identification and quantification. The latter method also allows distinction between isomers with different toxic properties when N2O/CH4 reaction gas mixtures are used. Selectivity for tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins as against pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls can be improved by this technique. The applicability of the method is critically discussed and different examples are given.

Notes: Two commercial preparative liquid chromatographs have been evaluated for gram-scale purification of steroid esters. The Jobin-Yvon and Waters chromatographs both allow fast separations. Neither system has a high intrinsic column efficiency, but the resolving power of the Waters system can be increased by the use of recycle. A laboratory-assembled preparative liquid chromatograph is described which is economical both in construction and operation, versatile, and considerably more efficient than the two commercial alternatives for single runs on up to a gram scale.

Notes: A two-dimensional gas chromatograph is described for the analysis of volatile compounds. The chromatographic system consists of two separate chromatographs linked together with an interface containing an intermediate trap. The trap is cooled with nitrogen (-150°C) and a cryogradient is created inside the trap enclosure. The sample is reinjected during controlled (chromatographic) conditions, using thermostated air. The sample components are eluted from the trap as narrow symmetrical peaks; the shape and width of the peaks eluted do not noticeably affect the subsequent chromatography. The enrichment of n-butane in the trap is quantitative in the range 10-10 - 10-5 g.

Notes: The present paper attempts to evaluate the fracture mechanics parameters, the stress intensity factor (K) and Rice's energy integral (J) in plane strain conditions for three-point bend specimens. Both the parameters have been evaluated by the FEM using higher order isoparametric elements (i.e. quadratic elements). The crack tip elastic singularity (1/√r) has been taken into account by the use of the special crack tip elements of degenerate triangular element type as well as the fine eight-noded isoparametric plane elements. The stress distribution has been compared with the Westergaard solution in the vicinity of the crack. The K and J values have also been-compared with the theoretical results.

Notes: A generalized boundary integral equation method for the solution of the Laplace equation is developed based on the Cauchy integral theorem for analytical complex variable functions. Although the approach is complicated by the utilization of complex variable theory, the resulting model involves direct integration along straight-line boundary segments (elements) rather than using quadrature formulae that are required in current real variable boundary element formulations. Previously published boundary integral equation methods based on the Cauchy integral theorem are shown to be a subset of the generalized model theory developed in this paper.

Notes: An optimum design sensitivity analysis capability is reported which exploits the approximation concepts-dual method formulation of the minimum weight structural sizing problem. An efficient iterative solution technique is used to facilitate determination of sensitivity derivatives for both primal and dual variables. Estimates on the useful range of parameter perturbations, over which the optimum design sensitivity projections can be expected to yield satisfactory revised optimum designs, are also obtained. Numerical results for several example problems will be presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the capability reported.

Notes: An optimal control finite element approximation of the penalization type for the solution of incompressible viscous Navier-Stokes equations is presented. This paper has proved the convergence of its minimizing sequence and the existence of the solution for the optimal control problem corresponding to the penalty variational problem of the Navier-Stokes equations. Based on this method and the conjugate gradient algorithm, the program for solving the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes problem has been developed, and some numerical results have also been provided.

Notes: We present numerical solutions for the following Stefan problems. The half-space z 〉 0 is initially filled with liquid at its fusion temperature. The boundary z = 0, taken to be the x axis, is maintained at a constant temperature, less than the fusion temperature, for x 〈 0. For x 〉 0, the first problem considers the case of an insulated boundary, and the second problem considers the case of the boundary maintained at the fusion temperature. This gives rise to a solid-liquid interface curved in the (x, z) plane.

Notes: For the semi-infinite crack propagating quasi-statically in a porous-elastic medium, the boundary integral equation method (BIEM), based on a reciprocal principle, is formulated for the governing equations of the Biot model of linear porous-elasticity. The resulting numerical scheme is efficient since the discretization of the solution unknowns is required only along the axis of symmetry of a fracture. Fracture propagation criteria based on both elastic and plastic constitutive relations are investigated. Practical applications of the model are expected in the failure of overconsolidated clay, earthquake prediction and underground hydraulic fracturing for energy exploration.

Notes: Recently developed computer aided design systems for the design and modification of complex physical solids using interactive computer graphics offer the exciting possibility of an integrated design/analysis system. Called geometric modellers, these systems build complex solids from primitive solids (cubes, cylinders, spheres, etc.) and macro solids (combinations of primitives). To provide an effective finite element analysis capability for these systems, methods must be devised to ease the burden of discretizing the solid geometry into a user controlled finite element mesh. In this paper we describe a new class of transitional blended finite elements which make substantially simpler the task of finite element mesh generation and local mesh refinement. Computational experience indicates that numerical accuracy is not compromised by use of these flexible elements.

Notes: A non-iterative method is presented for solving a system of algebraic equations forming a banded matrix with each diagonal submatrix being tridiagonal and all other submatrices being diagonal. A recursion relation is assumed between successive elements of the solution vector. This relation is determined by equating a linearly combined form of it with the original set of equations also being linearly combined. The solution vector is determined by back-substitution of elements in the recursion relation. Since the method takes advantage of the banded structure of the matrix, it is more efficient than the conventional methods. A FORTRAN program that incorporates the present method is included.

Notes: A finite element model that is suitable for the analysis of shells of revolution with arbitrary local deviations is presented. The model employs three types of shell elements: rotational, general and transitional. The rotational shell elements, which are most efficient, are used in the region where the shell is axisymmetric. The general shell elements, which can simulate almost any shell geometry, are used in the local region of the deviation. The transitional shell elements connect these two distinctively different types of elements and make it possible to combine them in a single analysis. The form of the global stiffness matrix is somewhat unique in the new model. Non-zero terms are not confined to a narrow band along the diagonal, but occur throughout the matrix. This is due to the following: (1) two different types of nodes, ring nodes and point nodes, are combined in a single analysis; and (2) a locally non-axisymmetric geometry creates a coupling of the Fourier harmonic coefficients of the rotational elements. Yet, the matrix still contains many scattered zero terms that should be considered for numerical efficiency. In this paper an efficient solution procedure that is effective for this situation is developed. The steps include the use of a substructuring technique and separate partial harmonic analysis. A numerical example is presented and compared with existing solutions to demonstrate the capabilities and the efficiency of the new model.
