Notes: Complex conductivity of moderately P-doped silicon wafers (1.1±0.2 Ω cm at room temperature) has been measured by using a terahertz (THz) time-domain spectroscopy for the temperature and frequency ranges of 20–300 K and 0.2–1.1 THz, respectively. The strong frequency dependence of the complex conductivity due to the free carriers in the THz region is observed and it changes rapidly with temperature, which is interpreted in terms of the increase in mobility and freezing of the free carrier as analyzed by using the simple Drude model. The experimental data deviate slightly from the simple Drude model at low temperatures and becomes apparent with decreasing temperature. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: An inchworm system with a new type of clamping mechanism has been made for a coarse positioner in a scanning tunneling microscope. The clamping mechanism operates by means of springs and piezoelectric actuators. This system can move a probe tip transversely and longitudinally in the horizontal plane, and the sample vertically, in steps, with a range of 8 mm in each direction.

Notes: Strain imaging is used to measure and image piezoelectric properties by detecting electric-field-induced strains using a scanning probe microscope. In this letter, we present ferroelectric domain imaging under an electrode in a lead-zirconate-titanate (PZT) film. The imaging has been achieved by detecting the surface force modulation caused by the electrode displacements. Observation through the electrode suppresses the effect of space charges and enables us to investigate the PZT film in the same situation in devices. We observed the freezing of polarization of a PZT film deoxidized by atomic hydrogen produced by catalysis of platinum upper electrodes due to hydrogen annealing. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: This letter presents results on imaging of charges causing the freezing of spontaneous polarization in a hydrogen-annealed lead–zirconate–titanate (PZT) film with platinum electrodes. It has been reported that the positive charges, produced by deoxidization of the PZT at the boundary with the platinum upper electrodes due to hydrogen annealing, fixed spontaneous polarization downward and thus greatly degraded remanent polarization. To date, such defect-related charges could not be observed directly. Imaging after removing the upper electrodes shows that the charges are located at the grain boundaries of the PZT and the charge density in the degraded region is much higher than that in the other region. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Optical properties of doped silicon wafers have been measured by means of terahertz time domain reflection spectroscopy. A method is proposed to obtain the relative phase by reflection accurately. By using this method, the relative phase is obtained within an error of less than 10 mrad at 1 THz. The experimentally obtained complex conductivity of relatively high-doped silicon (ρ=0.136 Ω cm) in the terahertz region agrees with the simple Drude model. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Although it is known that the compositions of low-molecular weight glutenin subunits (LMW-GSs) are important factors for bread-making quality of wheat, it is still not clear which LMW-GSs confer improved bread-making quality and how those LMW-GSs interact with high-molecular weight (HMW) GSs. Using a hard red winter wheat line with good bread-making quality and a Japanese wheat cultivar with poor quality as well as their progeny we identified LMW-GSs associated with the bread-making quality. One such LMW-GS, KS2, which had a molecular weight of 42 kDa and was allelic to HS1, was associated with bread-making quality. Furthermore, by using four recombinant inbred lines with different HMW-GS and LMW-GS combinations, KS2 and HMW-GS 5+10 showed interaction effects on the bread-making quality. Two-dimensional polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (Page) analysis showed that KS2 consists of two protein components and that HS1 is composed of three components. The N-terminal amino acid sequences of the five components were identical to the most frequently analysed sequence of LMW glutenin components.

Notes: The karyotype of Oryzias minutillus was examined with specimens collected from 18 localities in Thailand. Specimens from the south and the northeast had 2n = 42 acrocentric chromosomes; the arm number (NF) was 42 and NORs-chromosomes were acrocentric type (2n = 42, NF = 42, NORs-A). Specimens from the central and the north were characteristic by having 8-12 large metacentric chromosomes (LM-chromosomes). They had 2n = 28–34 chromosomes, and shared the same NF and NORs-chromosomes of submetacentric type (2n = 34-28, NF = 44, NORs-SM). Specimens from the southeast had 2n = 42 or 40 chromosomes. Their karyotypes had the same NF and NORs-chromosomes as those from the central and the north (2n = 40–42, NF = 44, NORs-SM), though they had no, or only one pair of, LM-chromosomes. The karyotype with 42 acrocentric chromosomes seems to be basic for O. minutillus, and consequently those with NORs-SM and LM-chromosomes seem to be caused through pericentric inversion and centric fusion, respectively. We confirmed that the karyotype evolution had occurred in drainage areas of the Mae Nam Chao Phraya and collaterals (the central, north and southeast). On the other hand, the basic karyotype was preserved allopatrically in the peninsula (the south) and the basin of the Mae Nam Mun, a tributary of the Mekong (the northeast).

Notes: From 25 populations of Pseudorasbora in Japan, polymorphism at 22 allozyme loci indicated that the level of genetic differentiation between Pseudorasbora parva and Pseudorasbora pumila (D = 0·421–0·517) was greater than that between the two subspecies of P. pumila, P. pumila pumila and P. pumila subsp. (D = 0·164), consistent with morphological differences. While P. parva displayed genetic variation (H = 0·003–0·100) similar to other freshwater fishes, P. pumila pumila and P. pumila subsp. populations showed no genetic variation. In five of the 15 populations collected from the contact zone between P. parva and P. pumila pumila, hybrids were detected by allozyme analyses. All hybrids were presumed to represent the F1 generation, because they were heterozygous at all 12 loci diagnostic between P. parva and P. pumila pumila. Although four populations were characterized by high frequencies of F1 hybrids (c. 40%), only one of the parental species was observed in each case. The results indicated that the two species have hybridized easily under natural conditions, but cannot coexist in the long-term. It is suggested that continued invasion of P. parva would hasten the extinction of P. pumila pumila.

Notes: The object of this study was to determine the details of morphological dynamics of spermatogenesis in Syrian hamsters exposed to both short photoperiod and low ambient temperature. Eight-week-old male hamsters, kept in a long photoperiod (14 h L, 10 h D), were transferred to a short photoperiod (6 h L, 18 h D) and kept there for 13 weeks to induce testicular regression. Some hamsters were then transferred from the room at 23°C to that at 5°C (5°C group). Remaining hamsters were continuously kept at 23°C (23°C group). Thereafter, the morphology was examined. As a result, it took only 8 weeks until spermatogenesis recovered in the 23°C group. However, it was not until 20 weeks that spermatogenesis was recognized in the 5°C group. As the regulation of seasonal testicular activity is characterized by coordinated shifts in the relationships among mitosis, meiosis, and apoptosis, the changes in the proliferative and apoptotic activities were examined. Although no significant difference in proliferative activity of spermatogonia between the 5°C and the 23°C groups was confirmed, a notable increase in the rate of apoptosis was observed in the 5°C group. Furthermore, this increase was more salient during the hibernation period. These findings suggest that both cold ambient temperature and hibernation caused the delay of testicular recrudescence and this delay arose from the increase of apoptotic activity but not the change in proliferative activity in spermatogonia in the 5°C group.
