Notes: Summary Enhanced killing of bacteria was obtained by radiation reaching the earth during total solar eclipse (February 16, 1980) than during the corresponding time of a normal day (February 26, 1980). The killing was not due to the formation of sunlight induced photoproducts of tryptophan. The damage to the bacteria exposed to sunlight could be repaired by photoreactivation.

Notes: Summary In the female Indian frog,Rana tigrina (2n=26; NF=52), the female is heterogametic. The heterochromosomes (ZW) are morphologically indistinguishable, but the W chromosome proves by C-banding analysis to be entierly heterochromatic.

Notes: Abstract The culture supernatant of Pseudomonas cepacia (ATCC 39027) grown on 2,4,5-trichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4,5-T) was found to contain an agent which can emulsify 2,4,5-T. The emulsion is stable for several hours. The emulsifying agent was produced in response to growth on 2,4,5-T, although some emulsification was observed in culture supernatant of glucose grown cells. The emulsifying agent is most active with 2,4,5-T but has some activity towards other chlorinated compounds such as chlorophenols. In growing culture the emulsifying agent adheres to the cell surface as a slimy layer. The emulsifying agent is believed to have a role in transport of 2,4,5-T into the cells.

Notes: Summary Enzymatic and structural studies of human cardiac myosin from young and old subjects have been investigated to determine possible changes in myosin properties in aging hearts. Human ventricular myosin from old subjects (47–70 years old) has lower actin-activated ATPase activity than and increased alkaline sensitivity as compared to myosin from young subjects (1–132 months old). Ca2+-and K+ (EDTA)-ATPase activities, pyrophosphate gel patterns and one-dimensional peptide mapping of heavy chains of ventricular myosin from old subjects are similar to those observed for myosin from young subjects. Atrial myosin from human hearts differs significantly from ventricular myosin in that the Ca2+-, Mg2+- and actin-activated myosin Mg2+-ATPase activities of atrial myosin are significantly higher than those of ventricular myosin. Pyrophosphate gel electrophoresis patterns and peptide mapping of heavy chains of atrial myosin are also different from those of ventricular myosin. Unlike ventricular myosin, atrial myosin from young hearts is similar to that of atrial myosin from old hearts in its enzymatic and structural properties.

Notes: Abstract Differential cross sections fore +e−→e +e−, τ+, τ- measured with the CELLO detector at $$\left\langle {\sqrt s } \right\rangle = 34.2GeV$$ have been analyzed for electroweak contributions. Vector and axial vector coupling constants were obtained in a simultaneous fit to the three differential cross sections assuming a universal weak interaction for the charged leptons. The results,v 2=−0.12±0.33 anda 2=1.22±0.47, are in good agreement with predictions from the standardSU(2)×U(1) model for $$\sin ^2 \theta _w = 0.228$$ . Combining this result with neutrino-electron scattering data gives a unique axial vector dominated solution for the leptonic weak couplings. Assuming the validity of the standard model, a value of $$\sin ^2 \theta _w = 0.21_{ - 0.09}^{ + 0.14}$$ is obtained for the electroweak mixing angle. Additional vector currents are not observed (C〈0.031 is obtained at the 95% C.L.).

Notes: Abstract The inclusive production of photons in $$\bar pp$$ interactions has been studied at incident momenta of 0.76 and 2.0 GeV/c. The inclusive cross sections for γ-production and the average multiplicities of γ, «n γ», are presented as a function of the charged prong topology. Results on the two particle correlation parametersf 00 andf −0 are presented. The inclusive distributions of the Feynman variablex and of the transverse momentump T of the photons are compared with the expectations from charged pion distributions on the basis of charge independence. A search has been made for direct γ-production in $$\bar pp$$ interactions at 0.76 GeV/c by looking for events which fit uniquely the hypothesis $$\bar pp \to m\pi ^ + + m\pi ^ - + \gamma $$ . An estimate of the ratio $$R = \frac{{\sigma (\bar pp \to m\pi ^ + + m\pi ^ - + \gamma )}}{{\sigma (\bar pp \to m\pi ^ + + m\pi ^ - + \pi ^0 )}}$$ is given.

Notes: Abstract A new type of roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa L.) differing from other types in respect of certain morphological and physiological characters is described. Characteristic glandless sepal (gs) was monofactorial recessive to the normal glanded sepal (Gs). The normal ovoid (Co) shape of capsules was incompletely dominant over the round shape (co) in the new type. No linkage was observed between gs and co.

Notes: Abstract Copper(II) oxide containing different amounts of sodium has been prepared. Thermo-analytical studies reveal differences in behaviour between sodium-incorporated samples and the control sample. A strong esr signal withg=2.1 is explained by assuming a square planar configuration around the Cu2+ ion. The spin concentration is found to vary linearly with the sodium content, each sodium decoupling the spins of 40 Cu2+ ions in CuO. The signal is found to be present even in a reduced sample. The origin of such species is explained on the basis of antiferromagnetic decoupling of spins.

Notes: New experimental data indicate that mass flux in cocurrent gas-liquid flows may be determined by the use of Pitot tubes in conjunction with a local mixture density measurement technique. The data were taken over a wide range of flow regimes in a horizontal pipe and included separated patterns such as stratified and annular flows. Local mixture densities were obtained by a computer-assisted algebraic reconstruction technique that used chordal average densities measured by traversing gamma beam attenuation. The results extend the applicability of this mass flux measurement technique well beyond the relatively homogeneous, high-pressure, steam-water flow situations originally studied by Banerjee and Nguyen (1977).
