Notes: Copper films were epitaxially grown on (100)Si substrates at room temperatures utilizing low kinetic-energy particle bombardment of growing copper film surfaces. The crystallographic structure of the film, such as (100) or (111) orientation, was selected by controlling the energy of incident particles. Low-temperature, damage-free substrate surface cleaning has also been realized by the low kinetic-energy particle process, which has made it possible to form ideal metal-semiconductor contacts without employing any alloying heat cycles.

Notes: Neutron generators, both D–D and D–T, have been used to calibrate the TFTR neutron activation (NA) system for point sources located within the tokamak. The foils used were In for D–D neutrons and Cu, Al, and 238U for D–T neutrons. Delayed neutrons following fission were counted when using 238U foils, 336-keV γ rays from 115In(n,n')115m In reactions, annihilation radiation from 62Cu following the 63Cu(n,2n)62Cu reaction, and 1368- and 2754-keV γ rays from the 27Al(n,α)24Na reaction. Large effects caused by source anisotropy and local machine structure were observed. These effects and the attempts to accommodate them in the data analysis will be described.

Notes: The primary TFTR neutron source strength measurement system consists of seven fission detectors previously calibrated with D–D and D–T neutron generators and a 252Cf neutron source inside the TFTR vacuum vessel. A recalibration became desirable because of the addition of major components to the tokamak. The new calibration with the D–D neutron generator in situ is consistent with the detection efficiencies measured in the previous calibrations, within the uncertainties. Effects of the anisotropic emission of the neutron generator, due both to the variation of the differential D–D yield with angle (similar to that from beam–target and beam–beam reactions in the beam-driven TFTR plasma) and to scattering and absorption by the generator heads have been observed.

Notes: Strong one-pass absorption of high-power microwaves is observed at the fundamental electron cyclotron resonance in an axisymmetric end mirror of the GAMMA 10 tandem mirror [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985); Phys. Fluids 29, 2781 (1986)]. The radial profile of microwave power deposition is directly measured without the influence of wall reflection. It coincides with that of the axial flow of warm electrons driven by the fundamental heating as well as with that of the plasma potential at the resonance. This indicates that strong electron cyclotron heating largely affects the potential formation through driving an axial flow of warm electrons.

Notes: Hot electrons have been produced by second harmonic electron-cyclotron resonance heating in axisymmetric end mirrors of the tandem mirror GAMMA10 [Phys. Rev. Lett. 55, 939 (1985)] with an on-axis density fraction reaching 80% and temperature of 25–50 keV, satisfying theoretically required conditions for the formation of thermal barriers. The successful control of the electron temperature may be attributed to the relativistic detuning of the second harmonic resonance for localized microwave power absorption. The time evolutions of relevant parameters are studied with extensive diagnostics.

Notes: Summary Frozen sections of eight primary malignant lymphomas of the brain were examined by the immunohistochemical methods using a panel of monoclonal and heterologous antibodies to B lymphocyte (immunoglobulins, BA-1, Leu-12 and HLA-DR), T lymphocyte (OKT-11 and Leu-1) and monocyte (OKM-1) surface markers. Paraffin sections were also used in the examination of cytoplasmic immunoglobulins. Surface and/or cytoplasmic immunoglobulins (Ig) were observed in seven cases, four of which were shown to be distinctly monoclonal and the other three less so. The remaining 1 case showed no distinct staining for Ig. BA-1, Leu-12 and HLA-DR stainings were positive in four, four and five cases, respectively. The marker phenotypes of (BA-1, Leu-12, HLA-DR) were shown to be (+,+,+) in one lymphoma, (+,-,-) in three, (-,+,+,)in three, and (-,-,+) in one. Thus, it was demonstrated that the present lymphoma cases showed a marked immunological heterogeneity, and it was shown that all of them including the Ig-negative case revealed one or more of these three additional B cell markers, indicating B cell lineage of these cases. Examination of T cell and monocyte markers revealed positive staining in normal or reactive lymphoid cells distributed around blood vessels or sporadically in tumor tissues, but not in lymphoma cells. Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-associated nuclear antigen was not demonstrated in the seven cases examined, making it unlikely that these lymphomas were related with EBV infection.

Notes: Summary Cellular localization of cytokeratin and glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) was examined in two normal choroid plexuses and five choroid plexus papillomas by the peroxidase-antiperoxidase (PAP) method and double immunofluorescence (IFL) microscopy. Cytokeratin was observed in the majority of epithelial cells in all samples of normal and neoplastic choroid plexuses. On the other hand, GFAP was observed in some of the constituent epithelial cells in two cases of papilloma. Most of these GFAP-positive papilloma cells were simultaneously positive for cytokeratin, as could be seen by the PAP stainings of serial sections and by the double IFL stainings of the same sections. From these findings, it was suggested that normal and neoplastic choroid plexus epithel cells usually express cytokeratin and that some of the neoplastic cells can simultaneously express boty cytokeratin and GFAP.

Notes: Summary Frozen cerebral and renal tissue sections of an autopsied “neoplastic angioendotheliosis (NAE)” case were investigated immunohistochemically using monoclonal and heterologous antibodies to lymphocyte, monocyte, endothelial, epithelial and histiocytic antigens. In both tissues, positive stainings for surface immunoglobulin (sIg) μ and ϰ, but not λ, were observed in most of the neoplastic cells. These cells were also positive for other B cell markers (BA-1, Leu-12 and HLA-DR). No distinct staining was observed in the neoplastic cells with antibodies to T lymphocyte (OKT-11 and Leu-1) or monocyte (OKM-1) markers. Posive stainings were observed only in some small round lymphoid cells which were distributed sporadically in and around blood vessels and were considered to be reactive. No positive staining was observed in the neoplastic cells with antibodies to endothelial (factor VIII), epithelial (cytokeratin) or histocytic (lysozyme) antigens. Thus, our NAE case was shown to be of monoclonal B cell lymphoma in nature.
