Notes: Thin films of III-V nitride semiconductors (AlN, GaN, InN), mixed-crystalline films (AlxIn1−xN), and multilayered films (GaN/InN)n were grown by rf magnetron sputtering at low substrate temperatures below 500 °C. These films were characterized by x-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, optical absorption, and electrical measurements; it was proved that they have high crystal quality comparable to the previously reported data obtained by other growth methods. Dependence of the band-gap energy of AlxIn1−xN on composition x was determined. Multilayered films of (GaN/InN) were prepared for the first time; these films showed the characteristic diffusion property to make an ordered-alloy superlattice.

Notes: Epitaxial thin films of LiNbO3 and LiTaO3 were grown on sapphire substrates by the rf-magnetron sputtering method. Structural characterization was made by several spectroscopic measurements: x-ray diffraction, Raman scattering, and optical absorption. We obtained epitaxial thin films with lattice-mismatched strained layers, without misfit defects which are usually created at the interface. Impurity-ion (Nd3+ and Cr3+) doped films were also grown; these films had larger refractive indices than the pure films. Furthermore, the heteroepitaxial thin films of up to 10 alternating LiNbO3/LiTaO3 layers were successfully grown, and their periodic structures were studied by optical second-harmonic generation.

Notes: Abstract The ample supply of O2 proved to be of great importance for berberine production in cell suspension culture ofThalictrum minus, as the specific O2 consumption rate of berberine-producing cells was twice as high as that of non-producing cells. Furthermore, berberine yield increased with increases in the volumetric O2 transfer coefficient (KLa). Estimation of the optimum conditions of oxygen supply in suspension cultures and immobilized cells according to a known theoretical model assuming O2 uptake by cells to be a zero-order reaction was in good agreement with the experimental data. The O2 supply to immobilized cells could be improved by reducing the cell density and radius of the bead.

Notes: Summary Dose-dependent relaxations were induced by dopamine in human pulmonary arteries that had been contracted with prostaglandin F2α without α-adrenergic blocking agents. The dopamine-induced relaxation was inhibited by haloperidol and fluphenazine, but not by domperidone, suggesting that this relaxation was mediated via DA1 receptors.

Notes: Abstract Thalictrum minus cells immobilized in calcium-alginate beads were cultured in a newly devised bioreactor for the purpose of producing berberine. This system could prevent cells from leaking out of the beads, allowing them to release most of the berberine synthesized into the liquid medium. Furthermore, the biosynthetic capability of the immobilized cells was found to be comparable to that of freely suspended cells.

Notes: Abstract 99Ru and57Fe-Mössbauer spectroscopic and magnetization measurements were made in order to clarify the magnetic properties of a Huesler alloy, RuFe2Si. The result obtained from99Ru-Mössbauer spectrum leads to the conclusion that Ru atoms were substituted by both Fe[A, C] and Fe[B], but the latter preferentially.

Notes: Summary Purified Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus was solubilized under reducing condition by using 2-merceptoethanol (2 ME) or nonreducing condition without 2 ME and its structural proteins were separated by polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis in the presence of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS-PAGE), followed by the Western blotting using polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against JE. The mobilities and reactivities against polyclonal anti-serum of V 3 (E) and V 2 (C) were reduced when virion was disrupted under reducing condition. The 54 K band corresponding to V 3 was treated with cyanogen bromide (CNBr) and analyzed by the second SDS-PAGE and Western blotting. By Coomassie Blue staining multiple bands of molecular weight ranging from 54 K to 8 K daltons were revealed for CNBr-treated V 3. For the specimens disrupted under reducing condition, uncleaved 54 K and cleaved 8 K, 14 K, 45 K, and 48 K bands were reactive by one of the JE and Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) crossreactive monoclonal antibodies (NARMA 16), while other monoclones did not show any reactivity. The uncleaved V 3 prepared under nonreducing condition was reactive with several monoclones to almost similar levels. After CNBr treatment, the antigenic epitope(s) for a flavivirus-common monoclone (NARMA 24) and those for NARMA 16 appeared to locate on different fragments, while the epitopes for other monoclones lost their antigenicities. These results indicate the importance of disulfide bond and highly organized structure to maintain some of the epitopes on V 3.
