    Notes: A new seed structure, partially thickened silicon films on insulator (PTS), is proposed for multilevel seeded-laterally epitaxial silicon films on insulator (SOI). Two-level seeded-laterally epitaxial silicon films on thick SiO2 (2.5 μm) were successfully fabricated, using the PTS structure in conjunction with the electron-beam technique. The SOI surface flatness after recrystallization was also improved by the PTS. Through computer simulation of the electron-beam recrystallization process, it is determined that the PTS structure enhances the lateral heat conduction within the SOI. This is important in smoothly melting the seed and field SOI regions.

    Notes: Development of the negative-ion sources has been conducted to realize a high power neutral beam injector for International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER). A high negative-ion current density of 31 mA/cm2 (H−) at a very low pressure of 0.1 Pa has been produced in a cesium seeded multicusp plasma generator which has the same concept of the ITER source. For a vacuum insulated accelerator, a voltage holding experiment of long distance vacuum gaps up to ∼1.8 m has been performed. It was clarified that the transition region of product pressure distance (pd) from the vacuum breakdown to the gas discharge is about 0.2 Pa m which is high enough from the operating region of the ITER source. A prototype vacuum insulated accelerator was fabricated based on the experiment and tested. A high-energy H− beam acceleration up to 970 keV, 37 mA, and 1 s has been successfully demonstrated. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The purpose of this study was to investigate the vibratory characteristics of three designs of the Class I Kennedy maxillary removable partial denture frameworks as the basic study. Their major connectors comprised a U-shaped palatal connector (UPC), single palatal bar (SPB), and anterior–posterior palatal bars (APB). Frequency response functions were measured when the framework was impacted. The modal shape was observed and the decay rate was calculated using modal analysis software. The results showed that the vibratory properties of each framework differed from each other. Within the range of frequencies from 10 to 2000 Hz, the UPC type had seven natural frequencies, while the SPB and the APB types had six. The UPC type had a greater number of natural modes accompanied by elastic deformation, including fluttering and twisting, than the other type, and the UPC type was considered to be unfavourable. The decay rate of the APB type was significantly higher than those of the UPC and the SPB types (P 〈 0·01).

    Notes: Summary We measured U1-RNP: anti-U1-RNP immune complexes (U1-RNP ICs) in patients with mixed connective tissue disease (MCTD) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) to examine the clinical significance of circulating U1-RNP ICs. The level of U1-RNP ICs in 11 patients with MCTD was significantly higher than that in 22 normal subjects and there was a close correlation between the level of U1-RNP ICs and the clinical disease activity index of MCTD. In contrast, the level of U1-RNP ICs in 31 patients with SLE was not significantly higher than that in normal subjects and that was not correlated with the clinical disease activity index of SLE or the renal histologic activity index of lupus nephritis. We conclude that U1-RNP ICs are present in sera of patients with MCTD and SLE, and that the level of U1-RNP ICs may be closely associated with clinical disease activity in patients with MCTD.

    Notes: Summary These studies have addressed firstly the effect of single small doses of x-rays upon murine hematopoietic stem cells to obtain a better estimate of theD q . It is small, of the order of 20 rad. Secondly, a dose fractionation schedule that does not kill or perturb the kinetics of hemopoietic cell proliferation was sought in order to investigate the leukemogenic potential of low level radiation upon an unperturbed hemopoietic system. Doses used by others in past radiation leukemogenesis studies clearly perturb hemopoiesis and kill a detectable fraction of stem cells. The studies reported herein show that 1.25 rad every day decrease the CFU-S content of bone marrow by the time 80 rads are accumulated. Higher daily doses as used in published studies on radiation leukemogenesis produce greater effects. Studies on the effect of 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 3.0 rad 3 times per week are under way. Two rad 3 times per week produced a modest decrease in CFU-S content of bone marrow after an accumulation of 68 rad. With 3.0 rad 3 times per week an accumulation of 102 rad produced a significant decrease in CFU-S content of bone marrow. Dose fractionation at 0.5 and 1.0 rad 3 times per week has not produced a CFU-S depression after accumulation of 17 and 34 rad. Radiation leukemogenesis studies published to date have utilized single doses and chronic exposure schedules that probably have significantly perturbed the kinetics of hematopoietic stem cells. Whether radiation will produce leukemia in animal models with dose schedules that do not perturb kinetics of hematopoietic stem cells remains to be seen.

    Notes: Abstract Cytotoxic effects of a leukocidin from Fusobacterium necrophorum were demonstrated on bovine hepatic cells. The cytotoxic response was dose-dependent and could be inhibited by homologous antiserum. Scanning electron microscopy revealed damaged hepatic cell surface. These findings indicated a pathogenic role of the leukocidin in F. necrophorum infections.

    Notes: The migration and orientation of human gingival fibroblasts in relation to the rim of smooth-surfaced and porous-coated titanium discs placed on multilayers in vitro was investigated. Samples were examined after 6 h, 24 h, 3 days, and 7 days of culture using phase-contrast and scanning electron microscopy. The cells migrated from the multilayer onto the smooth-surfaced discs forming bridges between them, and orientated along parallel circumferential grooves in the rim of the discs. This resulted in the cellular bridges orientating at an acute angle to the rim of the disc, and adjacent cells in the multilayer orientating parallel to the rim. Cellular bridges were also formed between the porous-coated discs and the multilayer but, because the cells that migrated onto, and between, the spheres of the porous-coat showed no preferred orientation, the bridges retained their orientation at right angles to the surface of the rim. This in turn resulted in the cells of the adjacent multilayer becoming similarly orientated. These observations suggest that the geometrical configuration of the surface of implants could influence whether a capsule or an orientated fibrous attachment is developed in relation to implants in vivo.
