    Notes: The contrasting effects of ion implantation and thermal annealing on structural and magnetic properties of Co/Pd multilayers have been studied. Ion implantation causes local damage to the multilayers, resulting in enhanced magnetization due to the polarization of the neighboring Pd. Thermal annealing generates massive interdiffusion across the interfaces into the formation of Co-Pd alloys with a lower magnetization. Effects on coercivity and remanence have also been studied.

    Notes: The magnetization behavior of Co/Pd multilayers has been analyzed as a function of the degree of interfacial mixing among the Co and Pd layers. Controlled atomic mixing was induced by low-dose and low-flux ion implantation and a follow-up of the structural status of the samples was made by simulation of the high-angle x-ray-diffraction data. Values of the saturation magnetization as a function of the broadness of Co concentration profile are presented and explained by a simple model based on the parameters obtained from the x-ray simulations.

    Notes: Abstract The behaviors exhibited by first-instarSinea diadema (F.) (Hemiptera: Reduviidae) during intraspecific interactions are described. Five distinct behaviors were characterized: posturing, striking, stalking, stridulating, and beaking. Distinct bouts of grappling were also noted. Interactions between unfed 2-day-old nymphs, unfed 3-day-old nymphs, and unfed 5-day-old nymphs were recorded and analyzed. The behavior of the nymphs changed with the duration of food deprivation. As the period of food deprivation increased from 2 to 5 days, the frequency of posturing decreased as the frequency of beaking increased. During noncannibalistic interactions, posturing or striking by one nymph was most frequently followed by posturing by the other nymph. In contrast, during cannibalistic interactions, posturing or striking was usually followed by beaking. The incidence of grappling increased with the duration of food deprivation. Moreover, grappling always preceded cannibalism. Although first instars were capable of capturing and killing conspecifics of the same age, cannibalism occurred only after 4 days of food deprivation. These results suggest that a decision-making process is involved. During interactions the nymphs can assess the vulnerability of the opponent. Whereas recently emerged nymphs usually forego the risk of attacking conspecifics, the attacks made by nymphs deprived of food are more persistent despite the danger of predation by their opponent.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Behandelt wird die Interpolation unregelmäßig verteilter Daten durch quadratische Powell-Sabin-Splines, wobei stückweise konstante obere und untere Schranken für die Funktionswerte der Interpolierenden vorgegeben sind. Die hergeleiteten hinreichenden Bedingungen für die Einhaltung der zweiseitigen Schranken ergeben ein lösbares lineares Ungleichungssytem für die Gradienten als Parameter, welches bezüglich der Datenpunkte separiert ist. Die Auswahl von visuell gefälligen Interpolierenden erfolgt durch die Minimierung geeigneter Funktionale.
    Notes: Abstract The construction of range restricted bivariateC 1 interpolants to scattered data is considered. In particular, we deal with quadratic spline interpolation on a Powell-Sabin refinement of a triangulation of the data sites subject to piecewise constant lower and upper bounds on the values of the interpolant. The derived sufficient conditions for the fulfillment of the range restrictions result in a solvable system of linear inequalities for the gradients as parameters, which is separated with respect to the data sites. Since there exists an infinite number of spline interpolants meeting the constraints, the selection of a visually pleasant solution is based on the minimum norm modification of a suitable initial interpolant or on the minimization of the thin plate functional. While the first proposal reduces to the solution of independent local quadratic programs, the second proposal results in a global quadratic optimization problem.

    Notes: Abstract Due to its hollow construction, which gives it elasticity, the Cenos hollow stem (Artos) reduces stress shielding in the intertrochanteric region and reduces bone remodelling at the distal tip after implantation of a cementless stem in the femoral canal. This should contribute to a longer implant survival time and reduce the number of revision procedures required for implant loosening. Its anatomical shape means that it fits well in the femoral canal and additionally improves load distribution. We prospectively studied patients in whom the Cenos hollow stem was implanted in our clinic. The clinical results after 1 year and 40 implantations are very satisfactory. No thigh pain has been reported so far, which is probably due to the effectiveness of the increased elasticity and the better fit of the stem. Preoperative planning with a special template is very accurate, and in combination with the anatomical shape of the stem makes the surgical procedure easy. The relatively high number of ectopic ossifications found in our series is obviously not related to the stem itself. In our opinion it is a result of the lateral approach. However, no clinical disadvantage resulted from these ossifications.

    Notes: Abstract Thermal extraction was used to quantify extracellular polymers (ECP) in granules from anaerobic upflow reactors. The optimal time for extraction was determined as the time needed before the intracellular material gives a significant contribution to the extracted extracellular material due to cell lysis. ECP contents of 41 to 92 mg · g−1 volatile suspended solids of granules were found depending on the type of granular sludge examined. The content of polysaccharides, protein and lipids in the extracted ECP was quantified. Furthermore, the different methyl esters of the lipids were determined and quantified. Lower amounts of polysaccharides and proteins were found in the extracellular material from granules grown on methanogenic and acetogenic substrates compared to granules grown on more complex substrates. In contrast, the lipid content was lower on complex substrates. Changing the feed of an upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor from a sugar-containing waste-water to a synthetic waste-water containing acetate, propionate and butyrate resulted in a decrease in both the protein and polysaccharide content and an increase in the lipid content of the extracellular material. Furthermore, the amount of protein and polysaccharides in the ECP found under mesophilic conditions was significantly higher than under thermophilic conditions, while the lipid content was lower.

    Notes: Abstract The effects of the novel antiasthmatic/antiallergic compound flezelastine on LPS-induced actions were investigatedin vitro andin vivo. In monocytes, IL-1β generation stimulated by LPS was inhibited dose dependently.In vivo, LPS-induced fever in rats, which is at least partly driven by the release of IL-1β, was also inhibited by flezelastine. These findings suggest that flezelastine inhibits IL-1 synthesis and/or releasein vitro andin vivo.
