Notes: Aims:  Other than ectopic expression of intestinal transcription factors, Cdx1 and Cdx2, the molecular mechanisms underlying gastric and intestinal phenotypes of human stomach adenocarcinomas have yet to be clarified in detail. We have reported that Sox2, an HMG-box gastric transcription factor, is expressed in normal gastric mucosa and down-regulated in intestinal metaplasia. Methods and results:  We analysed mRNA levels of Sox2 and other differentiation markers in 50 surgically resected stomach adenocarcinomas, immunohistochemically classified into gastric (G), gastric-and-intestinal (GI)-mixed, solely intestinal (I), and null (N) types. Sox2 was found to be transcribed in G and GI-mixed type adenocarcinomas in accordance with MUC5AC and MUC6 expression, while Cdx1 and Cdx2 were up-regulated in GI-mixed and I types along with the expression of MUC2 and villin. In the N type, both gastric and intestinal transcription factors were suppressed. Immunohistochemistry confirmed expression of Sox2 in MUC5AC+ lesions and Cdx2 localization together with MUC2. A stomach adenocarcinoma cell line, KATOIII, demonstrated both MUC5AC and Sox2, although MUC5AC mRNA was not detected in the Sox2+ AGS cell line. Conclusions:  Sox2 may play an important role in maintaining a gastric phenotype in stomach cancers as well as in normal tissue, in cooperation with other cofactor(s).

Notes: The fracture toughness of single-crystal silicon thin films oriented to (100) and (110) was investigated by tensile testing under both 〈100〉 and 〈110〉 loading conditions. The specimen was fabricated from a p-type Czochralski (CZ)-grown wafer and passed through a thermal process during the fabrication of the test device. The measured fracture toughness is dependent on the loading direction in the tensile test and independent of the specimen surface orientation. The test results were 1.94 MPa√m in the 〈100〉 direction and 1.17 MPa√m in the 〈110〉. In these tests, no longitudinal size effect on the fracture stress or fracture toughness was observed. The SEM photographs obtained from the fracture specimens after the tensile test show that the crack initiated from the notch tip and propagated straight in the across-the-width direction on the (110) or (111) cleavage plane.

Notes: Summary Feeding under conditions of reduced oxygen supply prompted an increase in serum, arterial and brain tissue levels of thiobarbituric acid (TBA)-reacting substances. These observations indicated the possibility that hypoxia might be one of the factors predisposing to the accumulation of lipid peroxide.

Notes: Abstract Analyses of the latest Jurassic Santiago Peak volcanic rocks from the western zone of the Peninsular Ranges batholith reveal the existence of two independent groups; one comprising basalts and andesites of the island arc tholeiitic series, and the second made up of the dacites and rhyolites of the subalkaline (calc-alkaline?) series or silicic series. The basalts and andesites have V, Co and Ni contents similar to those estimated for the residual melts in equilibrium with the Peninsular Ranges gabbros. This fact together with the tholeiitic nature of the gabbros and the intimate spatial and temporal relationship between the SPV and the gabbros suggests that the basalts and andesites had a common origin with the gabbros. The mafic volcanism and plutonism seems to have occurred in a youthful island arc and the silicic volcanism in a mature island arc or a continental margin.

Notes: Summary The MRL-lpr/lpr(MRL/l) mouse is a new animal model for human systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and skin lesions with hair loss and scab formation are one of the characteristic manifestations in this mouse. We investigated the histopathology of the skin lesions in MRL/l mice and studied the related autoimmune phenomenon. Light microscopical observations revealed hyperkeratosis, acanthosis, hypergranulosis, liquefaction, vasodilation in the dermis and T-cell infiltration into the dermis at the age of 5 months (mo). Immunohistological studies showed the presence of immunoglobulins and/or complement depositions at the dermal-epidermal junction (DEJ). In some mice there was deposition of immunoglobulin at the DEJ at 2 mo and in 90%–100% of MRL/l mice at over 5 mo. Temporal relationship was present among cutaneous immunoglobulin depositions, the occurrence of anti-DNA antibodies and proteinuria. These findings suggest that MRL/l mice might provide a new aid for studying the biological mechanisms of the development of skin lesions in human SLE.

Notes: It has been reported that SiC/SiC composite has high strength and toughness, but isdegraded when exposed in air at high temperatures due to the propagation of the crack made by the premature fracture of the SiO2 layer. The present work aimed to describe such a behavior with a computer simulation. For this aim, the shear lag - Monte Carlo simulation method was applied. The variation of strength of the composite as a function of thickness of the SiO2 layer and change of fracture morphology with progressing oxidation could be reproduced satisfactorily by this method

Notes: V- and Ti-Cr-based solid solutions with body-centered cubic (BCC) typestructure were investigated on hydrogen absorbing-desorbing cycle durability by using H2 without and with 10ppm CO (Hereafter they are expressed as H2 and CO/H2, respectively.). The solid solutions showed excellent cycle durability even after 1,000 cycles of hydrogen absorption and desorption under H2 atmosphere. On the other hand, the capacities decreased rapidly during hydrogen absorbing-desorbing cycles in the beginning of the tests under CO/H2 one. The solutions were not disproportionate though the stable monohydride phase increased, that is, stored hydrogen increased gradually. It was observed that not only microscopic pulverization but also nanoscopically fine-grained crystallization occurred in degraded particles. It is considered that the impurity CO influences bulk structure as an intrinsic factor as well as surface area as an extrinsic factor as regarded as ever. This causes the degradation of the cycle capacities
