Notes: Abstract:  In order to investigate the mechanism of glycolic acid (GA) function in human stratum corneum, we monitored changes in cathepsin D-like (CD) and chymotrypsin-like (SCCE) proteinases for 3 weeks following topical GA application (50% w/v, pH 0.9) for 30 min to human skin. In the early phase, weakened stratum corneum cohesion in the lower layers was observed on day 2 and the amount of active CD in the upper layer of the stratum corneum was significantly decreased from 30 min until day 2, whereas that in the lower layer remained normal. In contrast, the amount of active SCCE showed no change during the experimental period. The surface pH of the stratum corneum drastically decreased to pH 2 at 30 min and slightly recovered to around pH 3 until 1 day after treatment. From 9 to 19 days, a decrease in corneocyte cell area and a remarkable long-term increase in the amount of active CD in the upper layer were observed. In an in vitro study, the activities of desquamation-regulating proteinases were shown to have remarkably increased at around pH 3, due to activation of CD at its optimal pH. These results suggest that GA functions via at least two different mechanisms, acute activation of CD in the lower layer by acidification around pH 3, along with inactivation of CD in the upper layer, and long-term enhancement of de novo CD production in the few weeks following GA treatment.

Notes: Summary Erythrocytes of vitamin E-deficient kids and chicks were hemolyzed at concentrations of Tween 20 above 1%. In vivo or in vitro uptake of vitamin E by the erythrocytes, or the addition of dithiothreitol or 2-mercaptoethanol, prevented the hemolysis with Tween 20.

Notes: Summary A surgical carbon dioxide laser unit (laser) has been used since 1977 in twentyfive cases of various brain tumours, including ten meningiomas (four sphenoid ridge, two parasagittal, two falx, one olfactory, one posterior fossa), eleven gliomas (seven glioblastoma, four astrocytoma), two metastatic brain tumours, one haemangioblastoma, and one arteriovenous malformation (AVM). The criteria for laser use, as based on evaluation and location of meningioma, were: grade 1, convenient but adjuvant; grade 2, also necessary; grade 3, indispensable. The laser is obligatory in sphenoid ridge meningioma in order to peel the tumour away from the internal carotid artery, middle cerebral artery, cavernous sinus etc. The grade of necessity for laser use is therefore either 2 or 3. In convexity or parasagittal meningioma, on the other hand, the necessity grade is either 1 or 2. In the glioma group hemorrhage in seven cases of glioblastoma was easily laser-controlled, and the tumours were wasted away in a short time through vaporization, with minimum mechanical effect on adjacent tissue. The laser is therefore very useful in cases of glioma, especially glioblastoma, considering the shortened operating time, decreased blood loss, and extended area of tumour resection. Laser surgery is proposed as being most appropriate, mainly for its vaporizing and coagulating functions, in cases of brain tumour involving the elderly and poor risk cases.

Notes: Abstract Transesophageal M-mode echocardiography was applied for the evaluation of left ventricular performance in a case of severe tetanus with labile hypertension due to sympathetic nervous ‘torm’. When systemic blood pressure was elevated, increases in pulmonary arterial pressure, cardiac output, left ventricular enddiastolic diameter, fractional shortening and mean velocity of circumferential fiber shortening were noted. No changes were found in total peripheral vascular resistance or left ventricular endsystolic diameter. Positive pressure ventilation, rendered standard transthoracic echocardiography ineffective.

Notes: Summary Mouse erythrocytes were used, instead of rat erythrocytes, for typing adenoviruses by hemagglutination. Mouse erythrocytes were agglutinated by the prototype strains of adenovirus types 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 9 and 10 but not by types 3 and 7. Clear hemagglutination was observed without heterotypic antiserum by the microplate technique. No significant difference was observed in the hemagglutination titer using two strains of mice. Adenoviruses were identified by the hemagglutination inhibition test, using mouse erythrocytes and prototype strains 1, 2, 4, 5, 6 and 8. The use of mouse erythrocytes for typing of adenoviruses is recommended.

Notes: Abstract The reaction between ammonium sulphate with aluminium oxide was studied. It was confirmed by X-ray diffraction and chemical analysis that three intermediate reaction products, (NH4)3Al(SO4)3, NH4Al(SO4)2 and Al2(SO4)3, are formed. The thermal decompositions of these three compounds were carried out. It has been shown that the same rate law is valid for them.
Notes: Abstract The kinetics of the thermal decomposition of the addition compound of potassium carbonate with hydrogen peroxide was carried out using a fixed bed flow reactor with gas-chromatography. The experimental results can be best represented over the whole range of the decomposition, by the equation-In (1−α)=kt, whereα=degree of decomposition,t=time (min.), andk=rate constant (min.−1). The activation energy and the pre-exponential factor for 0〈α〈0.8, are 74.3 kJ/mol and 7.8 · 109, and for the decay period (0.8〈α〈1.0), 77.3 kJ/mol and 1.38 · 1010, respectively.
