    Notes: Since the late 1980s, brands have gained centre stage in marketing and in the managerial discourse. From having been a mere marker that identifies the producer or the origin of a product, the brand is today increasingly becoming the product that is consumed. For the corporation, the brand is conceptualised as the essence of the firm, its most crucial "asset". In the literature, branding is described as a process of expressing core values through the use of persuasive stories. By questioning the conception of brands as corporately managed stories, the article aims to re-conceptualise branding as a process of aesthetic expression, where the conventional distinctions between senders and receivers become blurred. The paper looks into how brands have become depicted in the branding literature, and thereafter discusses the narrative and pictorial modes of communication. On the basis of this, the article finally discusses how images are used and reused in the joint construction of brands, thus challenging the idea of brands as stories crafted and controlled by the corporation.

Die Beförderung der Veronalausscheidung durch Alkalidarreichung wird bestätigt, und zwar auch für die akuten Bedingungen eines Alkalistoßes, der sich sehr wirksam erwies. 2. Der Mechanismus der Wirkung ist vorwiegend renal; es kommt eine Hemmung der Rückresorption des Veronals im Tubulusapparat sowie eine vermehrte Ausscheidung in Form seiner Alkaliverbindung in Betracht. 3. Die Darreichung von Alkali hat auf den Verlauf der Veronalvergiftung einen günstigen Einfluß. An ihrem Zustandekommen sind mehrere Faktoren beteiligt.

    Notes: Zusammenfassung Lösungen der Pfeifferschen Verbindung von 1 Molekül Veronal und 1 Molekül Pyramidon sind von Lösungen der beiden Komponenten chemischphysikalisch nicht unterscheidbar, da sich derselbe Endzustand einstellt, gleichgültig, ob die Molekülverbindung oder die Einzelbestandteile zur Lösung gebracht wurden. In quantitativ messenden Versuchen nach der Methodik von Magnus ließ sich am Kaninchen kein Unterschied in der pharmakologischen Wirksamkeit zwischen der Pfeifferschen Molekülverbindung und dem einfachen Gemenge von Veronal und Pyramidon nachweisen.

Bei Vergiftungen mit Gemischen von Pyramidon und Veronal klingt die zentrale Gegenwirkung des Pyramidons verhältnismäßig rasch ab, so daß schließlich eine reine Veronalwirkung zum Vorschein kommt. 2. In der Kombination verzögert das Pyramidon bei Vergiftungen mit höheren Dosen die Ausscheidung des Veronals und verlängert dadurch den narkotischen Zustand.

    Notes: Abstract Between 1991 and 1995, 96 patients (114 feet) were treated with a proximal crescentic metatarsal osteotomy and distal soft-tissue procedure for moderate to severe hallux valgus deformity [intermetatarsal (IM) angle 〉 15°, or hallux valgus (HV) angle 〉 30°]. At an average follow-up of 26 months, 8 men and 62 women (86 feet) with a mean age of 53.2 years were retrospectively reviewed. The HV angle averaged 41.1° preoperatively and 14.6° postoperatively. The respective values for the IM angle were 17.8° and 7.8°. Neither the average metatarsal shortening of 3 mm nor the dorsal angulation at the osteotomy site seen in 9% of cases evidenced any clinical significance at follow-up. Patient satisfaction was excellent or good in 91%, and the mean Mayo Clinic Forefoot Score (total 75 points) improved from 37.2 to 61.1 points. Complications included 8 cases of hallux varus and 5 cases of hardware failure. Based on this first study exclusively focusing on moderate to severe hallux valgus deformity, we conclude that proximal first metatarsal osteotomy in combination with a lateral soft-tissue procedure is effective in correcting moderate to severe symptomatic hallux valgus deformity with metatarsus primus varus (IM angle 〉 15° or HV angle 〉 30 °).

    Notes: Abstract Recovery as well as appearance and abundance (in percent) of different fractions of humic substances are found to depend on injected sample amounts in reversed phase HPLC. Sample amounts have been varied both by varying sample concentration and sample volume. In case of lowest amounts injected only two fractions were obtained for a commercial humic acid sodium salt, i.e. one for excluded molecules and one for hydrophobic components. The abundance of excluded molecules decreases upon increasing amounts injected. Another three fractions are obtained upon increasing amount injected: a hydrophilic fraction and two hydrophobic ones. This behavior is explained by auxiliary equilibria between excluded components and humic molecules previously adsorbed on the stationary phase.

    Notes: Abstract Established methods for imaging of biological or biomimetic samples, such as fluorescence and optical microscopy, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), X-ray tomography or positron emission tomography (PET) are currently complemented by infrared (both near-IR and mid-IR) as well as Raman spectroscopic imaging, whether it be on a microscopic or macroscopic scale. These vibrational spectroscopic techniques provide a wealth of information without a priori knowledge of either the spectral data or the composition of the sample. Infrared radiation does not harm the organism, no electric potential needs to be applied, and the measurements are not influenced by electromagnetic fields. In addition, no extrinsic labeling or staining, which may perturb the system under investigation, has to be added. The immense volume of information contained in spectroscopic images requires multivariate analysis methodologies in order to effectively mine the chemical and spatial information contained within the data as well as to analyze a time-series of images in order to reveal the origin of a chemical or biochemical process. The promise and limitations of this new analytical tool are surveyed in this review.
