    Notes: Abstract  New functional materials are being considered having in perspective an important role in the development of microsystems. In particular, in an experiment of pulsed laser deposition (equipped with in situ reflection high-energy diffraction of the growth surface) thin Pt epitaxial layers have been deposited on SrTiO3 (0 0 1) substrates. It is shown that thin single-crystal layers of metallic Pt (0 0 1) can be heteroepitaxially grown on SrTiO3 (0 0 1). Furthermore complex SrTiO3–Pt–SrTiO3 heteroepitaxial structures have been deposited. This result is of relevant importance for the growth of new functional materials consisting of heteroepitaxial structures involving both complex oxides and standard metals. These materials may reasonably open up new prospects in the field of microsystem technologies.

    Notes: Abstract We show that good quality epitaxial films of magnetic lithium ferrite can be grown by pulsed laser deposition technique either using an XeCl excimer laser or a Nd-YAG laser. The use of the excimer laser allows to grow films with a better surface morphology but does not improve the magnetic properties of films. Structural and electrical transport measurements give indirect evidence of the incorporation of lithium in the structure. The as grown electrical resistivity (about 104Ω/cm) and its activation energy are typical of well compensated spinels. Vibrating sample magnetometer and ferromagnetic resonance measurements were used to characterize the film magnetic and microwave properties.

    Notes: Abstract The photopyroelectric effect has been used to measure simultaneously specific heat (c), thermal conductivity (k) and thermal diffusivity (α) at low temperatures. A calibration procedure which allows the use of a pyroelectric transducer at low temperatures is described. Simultaneous measurements of c, k, and α over a high T c superconducting phase transition are reported.

    Notes: Abstract Subgab absorption measurements carried out by photothermal deflection spectroscopy in semi-insulating GaAs are used to study the concentration of defects found in as-grown and in heat treated material. Measurements carried out in ion-implanted and furnace-annealed samples prove to be a useful tool for monitoring the successful recovery of the ion implantation damage.

    Notes: Abstract The wavelength dependence of the second-harmonic (SH) generation efficiency has been measured in copper. A strong enhancement of the SH generation has been observed at the onset of interband transitions. Above the absorption edge the second-order polarization is dominated by the nonlinear response of bound electrons.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Presentiamo in quest'articolo un nuovo modello matematico per il calcolo della figura di diffrazione a grande distanza di un fascio laser che subisce modulazione di fase nell'attraversamento di un campione otticamente sottile riscaldato dal fascio stesso. Si tratta in particolare il caso del campo di temperatura stazionario generato dall'assorbimento del fascio laser in un film limitato da due lastre trasparenti. Il film ha un basso coefficiente di assorbimento ed è di spessore tale da non poter trascurare gli effetti termici ed ottici nelle lastre di contenimento il cui scambio termico con l'ambiente è considerato proporzionale alla differenza di temperatura. Queste ipotesi descrivono l'applicazione, nel caso stazionario, della spettroscopia detta di «thermal lens» alla misura di proprietà termiche od ottiche di campioni liquidi. Si presenta un'espressione esplicita per l'intensità diffratta che permette di realizzare programmi di calcolo elettronico molto rapidi. L'affidabilità del metodo è dimostrata per confronto con le soluzioni offerte da modelli preesistenti di piú complessa applicazione.
    Abstract: Резюме Предлагается математическая модель для описания дифракционной картины для лазерных пучков с тепловой модуляцией фазы, связанной с прохождением через оптически тонкие пленки. Мы рассматриваем стационрное поле температур, образованное слабым поглощением лазерного пучка в оптически и термически тонкой пленке, ограниченной двумя прозрачными пластинами, стенками ячейки, для которых теплообмен с окружающей средой предполагается линейным по разности температур с окружающей средой. Эти гипотезы описывают применение спектроскопии стационарных «тепловых линз» для определения оптических или термических свойств жидких образцов. Мы приводим очень простое выражение для дифракционной картины, которая получается с помощью компьутерных вычислений. Покзывается высокая точность предложенной техники, посредством сравнения с резулятатами, полученными с помощью волее сложных подходов.
    Notes: Summary A mathematical model of the far-field diffraction pattern of a laser beam with laser heating self-phase modulation through an optically thin film is presented. We deal with the steady-state temperature field generated by the weak absorption of a laser beam in an optically and thermally thin film bounded by two transparent plates, the cell walls, whose thermal exchange to the surrounding ambient has been assumed to be linear in the temperature difference to the ambient. These hypotheses describe the application of the steady-state «thermal lens» spectroscopy to the detection of the optical or thermal properties of liquid samples. We give a very simple expression for the diffracted intensity that appears suitable for fast computer calculations. The good accuracy of the technique is shown by comparison with the results given by more intricate approaches.

    Notes: Summary We have shown that the pulsed-laser deposition (PLD) technique can be successfully used to grow artificial superlattices based on the infinite-layer compounds BaCuO2 and SrCuO2. We have demonstrated, by a kinematic analysis of the X-ray diffraction spectra, that the random discrete thickness fluctuations affect both the BaCuO2 and the SrCuO2 layers approximately in the same way. Furthermore, such kind of interfacial disorder resulted to be surprisingly low for this system. Such feature is confirmed by the appearance of sharp superstructure peaks even for the (BaCuO2)2/(SrCuO2)1 superlattice, where only one SrCuO2 unit cell is deposited in the stacking sequence. These results show that truly new structures can be obtained by a layer-by-layer deposition technique with a low interfacial disorder and give strong support to the idea of synthesizing new artificial high-T c structures by the PLD technique.

Первые два параметра обнаруживают критическое убывание и возрастание, соответственно, тогда как третий параметр не обнаруживает какоголибо критического поведения.
    Notes: Summary The photoacoustic-technique application to the simultaneous characterization of the thermal diffusivity, specific-heat capacity and thermal conductivity of a liquid crystal at a phase transition is presented for the first time. The first two parameters show a critical decrease and increase, respectively, while the third one does not exhibit any critical behaviour.

    Description / Table of Contents: Riassunto Si presenta la validazione sperimentale di un modello matematico dei campi di temperatura generati dall’irraggiamento laser di campioni. Il test è stato eseguito sull’acqua, un materiale dai parametri termodinamici ben noti. I dati sperimentali sono stati ottenuti mediante interferometria microolografica. Il modello validato, congiuntamente al metodo microolografico, può essere usato per la caratterizzazione termica dei materiali.
    Abstract: Резюме Экспериментально докаэывается справедливость математической модели температурного поля, образованного при лазерном облучении образца. Проверка проводилась на воде, т.е. материале с хорошо известными термодина-мическими параметрами. Экспериментальные данные получены с номощью голографической интерферометрии. Предложенная модель может быть использована для определениа термодинамических свойств различных материалов.
    Notes: Summary The experimental validation of a mathematical model of the temperature field generated by the laser irradiation of a sample is shown. The test was performed on water, a material with well-known thermodynamic parameters. The experimental data were obtained by means of holographic interferometry. The validated model, in connection with the microholographic method, can be used to determine the thermodynamic properties of different materials.
