Notes: A quarterly macro-econometric model of Japan's postwar economy has been constructed for the period 1954–1965 FY on the basis of standardized quarterly national income accounts. The model is designed for facilitating short-term economic forecasting and formulating adequate fiscal and monetary policy. Longer-term factors such as labor mobility, technical progress, etc., were also considered in the model. The model consists of fifty-three equations related to most of the macroeconomic variables in both money and real terms, and the equations were estimated in principle by the limited information maximum likelihood method. Principal exogenous variables related to policy instruments are government expenditures including transfers, parameters of tax functions, interest rate, and prices and fares controlled by the government, etc. In formulating the model, non-linear specifications were used whenever found necessary. Results of our testing on its predictive capability indicated fairly satisfactory performances for our observation period and also for 1966 FY. Multipliers related to fiscal and monetary policy were also obtained, indicating the dynamic characteristics of the Japanese economy, in particular, represented by dynamic business fixed investment, as compared with corresponding multipliers of the U.S. models.Although the model is exploratory and to serve as a core for a more disaggregated “Master Model,” the usefulness of the model for our purposes and the workability of our quarterly national accounts data for model-building have been recognized. The quarterly data, however, still remain to be improved especially in regard to consistency between income and expenditure and integration with flow-of-funds accounts.

Notes: Abstract Superconducting Y-Ba-Cu-O bulks with J c as high as 30 kA /cm 2 (at 77 K and 1 T) containing both Y-123 and Y-211 phases were utilized in the present work . With different post-annealings, we obtained samples with different degrees of peak effect in the J c -vs- H characteristics. Using specimens with TEM observable areas as wide as 20 × 20 (μm) 2 , large-area high-resolution transmission-electron-microscopic (LA-HRTEM) observations were made for the samples with different degrees of peak effect. Statistical analyses were made for the size of Y-211 particles and the distance between adjacent twin boundaries. It is revealed that (1) Y-211 particles including those of very small diameters have nothing to do with-the peak effect, while (2) the inter-twin-boundary distance is undoubtully correlated with the degree of peak effect. Further investigation on the twin boundary structure indicates that lower T c regions may be formed in the vicinity of twin boundaries to provide fluxons with mesoscopically distributed weak pinning centers.

Notes: Construction of a gene expression system in tobacco cultured cells (BY2) was studied. A 925 bp promoter fragment of a heat-shock protein gene (HSP18.2) of Arabidopsis thaliana showed clear heat-shock response of expression of the β-glucuronidase (GUS) reporter gene in BY2 cells. Similar results were observed in a 500 mL flask and 3-L jar fermentor.Isolation of strong promoters in BY2 cells was tried. cDNA clones, in which the mRNA level is high in log-phase cells and the copy number in the genome is low, were isolated. These clones showed high homology with F1-ATPase (mitochondria type), elongation factor 1-α, and a gene with an unknown function of A. thaliana (clone 27), respectively. A 5′-flanking region of clone 27 showed 6.2 times the promoter activity of the CaMV35S promoter in BY2 cells.Three cDNA clones, which are expressed in the stationary growth phase of BY2 cells, were isolated by a differential screening. These clones showed high sequence homologies to alcohol dehydrogenase, pectin esterase, and extensin. Promoters of these genes will be useful in gene expression in high cell-density culture. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Biotechnol Bioeng 58:329-332, 1998.

Notes: The fourth type of polyethylene - very low density polyethylene (VLDPE) - has been developed very recently. VLDPE is a copolymer of ethylene and 1-butene. The radiation and photo degradation of VLDPE was studied using gel, FT-IR, and UV spectral measurements. Mechanical tests were also done; the rate of gel and carbonyl formation was high. End methyl —CH3 group was found to increase in the case of radiation degradation. The initial modulus was very low indicating the rubbery nature in the copolymer. VLDPE was found to be highly resistant to radiation-induced degradation than linear low density polyethylene. VLDPE is highly susceptible to thermal effects.
