Description / Table of Contents:
Notes:
Summary In Wistar-rats (FW 49) toxic liver damage was induced by application of 1.0 g/kg body-weight galactosamine (“galactosamine-hepatitis”). Hematocrit, erythrocytes pro mm3 blood and hemoglobin were determined as well as the circulating blood volume (131J-labelled albumin-dilution technique). 48 hours after application of galactosamine the hematocrit had increased from 49.3% to 73.2% while circulating blood volume had decreased from 5.61 ml/100 g to 4.49 ml/100 g (=20%). 72 hours after galactosamine application these parameters were normalized. Although the hemoconcentration was partially induced by an anorexia an extravasation of the plasma—probably due to toxic damage of the blood vessels—was the main cause of the decrease of blood volume. From these results it is concluded that the plasma levels of various substances should always be interpreted in connection with changes in blood volume.
