    Notes: We present a study of the bonding of formate (HCOO) and acetate (CH3COO) chemisorbed on Cu(110) using core level spectroscopies in combination with theoretical calculations. For the first time, we apply x-ray emission spectroscopy (XES) to these systems. When XES is used in conjunction with x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and ab initio calculations, new information about the electronic interaction in the adsorbate–substrate system is provided. In particular, we have used the azimuthal orientation of the COO–surface bond on the (110) surface, to make a complete partition into x, y, and z orbital contributions. The surface bond is found to be predominantly ionic. For the case of adsorbed formate, the covalent bonding is dominated by 6a1/7a1, (σ)-type, frontier orbitals, interacting with the Cu valence band. The resulting hybrid orbitals form a distribution of states that cross the Fermi level. The contribution from adsorbate π-type orbitals is small. The chemical bond formation of adsorbed acetate is very similar to that of formate. In addition, states with metal character have been identified for the outermost CH3-group of acetate. These are delocalized states of mainly local σ-character. The spectral features due to states of local π-character in the adsorbed acetate are well described within the framework of hyperconjugation. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The initial stages of diamond growth on nickel have been studied by in situ electron-excited soft x-ray emission spectroscopy. The study has been able to clarify that the codeposition of ordered graphite at the substrate/film interface is due to carbon precipitation during the cooling-down period after the deposition. The possibility to follow a deposition process from the initial stages to the end with soft x-ray emission spectroscopy is also demonstrated. © 1996 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We present a study of a monolayer of ammonia (NH3) adsorbed on Cu(110) using core level spectroscopies in combination with ab initio calculations based on density functional theory. In particular, x-ray emission spectroscopy has been applied, providing an unsurpassed view of the electronic structure of NH3 upon adsorption. The saturated NH3 monolayer, aitch-theta∼0.4 ML, is found to induce strong adsorbate–adsorbate interaction, causing the molecules to tilt on the surface. Based on the angular distribution of the x-ray emission (XE) spectra, we have been able to estimate a mean tilt angle from the surface normal of 40°–45° for the saturated monolayer; the accompanying theoretical calculations for up to three NH3 molecules on a Cu21 all-electron cluster model support a tilted structure due to adsorbate–adsorbate dipole, and possibly hydrogen bonding, interactions. Since the creation of a core hole on the nitrogen atom site in the intermediate state of the XE process does not affect the symmetry of the molecule, a separation of valence electronic states having mainly e symmetry (N 2pxy) and a1 symmetry (N 2pz) has been achieved using angle resolved XE measurements. In addition to the electronic states of free NH3, evidence of new, substrate induced, states has been found, interpreted as ammonia 3a1/4a1-Cu 3d valence band hybrids. It is found that back donation into the previously unoccupied ammonia 4a1 orbital, and a simultaneous 3a1 donation into the substrate plays an important role in the surface chemical bond. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: An end station for soft x-ray fluorescence spectroscopy has been constructed, which includes an experiment chamber, rotatable 90° under ultrahigh vacuum conditions around the incoming synchrotron radiation beam, which is provided with a high-resolution soft x-ray spectrometer. A manipulator allowing three axes of rotation, three directions of translation, as well as LN2 cooling and resistive heating is mounted to the chamber and serves as the sample holder. Samples can be transferred under vacuum between the experiment chamber and two other chambers, one for sample preparation and another for introducing new samples and for sample storage. The end station has been used at two different synchrotron radiation laboratories (beamline BW3) at HASYLAB in Hamburg and at ALS (beamline 7.0) in Berkeley. Polarization-dependent and angular resolved, selectively excited x-ray emission studies have been made on ordered as well as nonordered systems, e.g., high-Tc superconducting systems, diamond, fullerenes, and molecular ices. The experimental system will be presented along with some recent scientific results. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Soft x-ray emission spectroscopy is a common tool for the study of the electronic structure of molecules and solids. However, the interpretation of spectra is sometimes made difficult by overlaying lines due to satellite transitions or close-lying core holes. Also, irrelevant inner core transitions may accidentally fall in the wavelength region under study. These problems, which often arise for spectra excited with electrons or broadband photon sources can be removed by using monochromatized synchrotron radiation. In addition, one achieves other advantages as well, such as the ability to study resonant behavior. Another important aspect is the softness of this excitation agent, which allows chemically fragile compounds to be investigated. In this work we demonstrate the feasibility of using monochromatized synchrotron radiation to excite soft x-ray spectra. We also show new results which have been accomplished as a result of the selectivity of the excitation. The work has been carried out using the Flipper I wiggler beamline at HASYLAB in Hamburg using a new grazing incidence instrument designed specifically for this experiment. The photon flux at the Flipper I station (typically 5×1012 photons per second on the sample with a 1% bandpass) is enough to allow soft x-ray fluorescence spectra to be recorded at relatively high resolution and within reasonable accumulation times (typically, the spectra presented in this work were recorded in 30 min).The spectrometer is based on a new concept which allows the instrument to be quite small, still covering a large wavelength range (10–250 A(ring)). The basic idea involves the use of several fixed mounted gratings and a large two-dimensional detector. The grating arrangement provides simple mounting within a limited space and, in particular, large spectral range. The detector can be moved in a three-axis coordinate system in order to cover the different Rowland curves defined by the different gratings. The arrangement permits the use of gratings with different radii, which further facilitate the achievement of optimum performance over a large range. Two-dimensional detection is used to allow a large solid angle, without suffering from loss of resolution due to imaging errors. The detector is based on five 2-in. MCPs with resistive anode read out. The sensitivity of the detector, which is normally very low for soft x rays, especially at grazing angles, is enhanced by CsI coating and by using an entrance electrode.
