Notes: A lattice-mismatched ZnTe epilayer on a GaAs(100) substrate was grown by the simple method of temperature-gradient vapor deposition. X-ray diffractometry measurements were performed to investigate the structural properties of the ZnTe layer. Raman spectroscopy measurements showed that there was a lattice mismatch between the ZnTe epitaxial layer and the GaAs substrate. Reflectivity and photoreflectance measurements clearly revealed the splitting of the valence-band maximum, and photoluminescence measurements showed several resonant excitations of the ZnTe. The binding energies of the light holes and heavy holes determined from the splittings are in reasonable agreement with the bulk values.

Notes: Ohmic plasma size scans have been carried out in the Tokamak Fusion Test Reactor (TFTR) [Fusion Technol. 21, 1324 (1992)] to measure the influence of the major radius upon energy confinement. The major radius, minor radius, and aspect ratio were varied over wide ranges (R=2.08–3.2 m, a=0.4–0.9 m, and R/a=2.9–8.0) at constant qc. The energy confinement determined from kinetic diagnostics varies strongly with major radius. The data set is less well suited to determine minor radius scaling, but it appears to be distinctly weaker than the major radius scaling. The anomaly in ion thermal conductivity over neoclassical predictions appears to decline with increasing aspect ratio, which is a better ordering parameter for the magnitude of the anomaly than either the minor radius or the major radius. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: A lattice-mismatched ZnTe epilayer on a GaAs (100) substrate was grown by the simple method of temperature-gradient vapor deposition. From the x-ray diffraction analysis, the grown layers were found to be ZnTe epitaxial films. The stoichiometry of the ZnTe films was investigated by Auger electron spectroscopy. Transmission electron microscopy measurements showed that there was a large lattice mismatch between the ZnTe epitaxial layer and the GaAs substrate. These results indicate that ZnTe epitaxial films grown on GaAs substrates at 320 °C have no significant interdiffusion problems, and that pseudomorphic, fully strained ZnTe layers are observed for deposits after ten molecular layers.

Notes: We report nondestructive observations of both heavy-hole and light-hole excitons in the GaAs/AlGaAs multiple quantum wells (MQWs) using photoacoustic spectroscopy. The absorption spectra were measured by the gas-microphone photoacoustic technique with a minimal volume cell and grazing incidence method. Two distinct peaks were clearly observed in the photoacoustic signal and phase spectra of the MQW at room temperature. A photoreflectance measurement for the given MQW structure revealed that two peaks originated from the heavy-hole and light-hole excitonic resonances.

Notes: CdTe epitaxial films were grown by a simple method of temperature gradient vapor transport deposition on p-InSb (111) orientation substrates in the growth temperature range between 200 and 300 °C. The stoichiometry of the CdTe/InSb heterostructure was observed by Auger electron spectroscopy, and Auger depth profiles demonstrated that the CdTe/InSb heterointerface was not abrupt. Transmission electron microscopy verified the formation of an interfacial layer in the CdTe/InSb interface and the formation of the stacking faults in the CdTe thin film. These results indicated that the films grown at approximately 270 °C contained a formation problem of an interfacial layer due to interdiffusion from the InSb prior to the growth of the CdTe, and that the interfacial layer might deteriorate the electrical property of the CdTe epitaxial layer. © 1994 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Summary. We report four cases of occupational asthma caused by chromium salts, three of whom showed dual and one isolated early asthmatic responses on specific chromium bronchoprovocation test (BPT). All of them were ex–smokers. Two showed positive skin–prick tests to 10mg/ml of Cr2(SO4)3, but negative results on patch testing. The remaining two showed positive results on patch testing with Cr2(SO4)3. Three had airway hyperresponsiveness to methacholine on initial examination. Although initial methacholine airway challenge testing showed a negative result in the remaining patient, airway hyperresponsiveness developed transiently 24 h after an isolated immediate asthmatic reaction induced by chromium. Three patients were reassessed after complete avoidance of chromium. Two subjects showed marked improvement of their symptoms with significant increases of PC20 methacholine. We conclude that chromium induces occupational asthma in exposed workers. Further investigations are needed to clarify the pathogenetic mechanism.

Notes: Abstract. There have been very few cases of occupational allergies caused by herb materials. In this paper, we report a case of occupational asthma and rhinitis caused by two herb materials. Dioscorea batatas and Pinellia ternata which are known as Sanyak and Banha respectively. The patient had strong positive responses to grass pollens and cat fur, as well as to Sanyak and Banha extracts on skin-prick tests. Bronchoprovocation tests showed a dual asthmatic response to Sanyak whereas only an early asthmatic response to Banha. Serum specific IgE and IgG4 antibodies to Sanyak were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) but there was no specific IgE antibody binding to Banha. In order to further characterize the allergenie component of these extracts, sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) and electroblotting studies were also performed. Three IgE binding components (29000, 57000, 63000 Da) were detected within the Sanyak extracts, but no IgE-binding component was noted within the Banha extracts. It is suggested that Sanyak can induce IgE-mediated bronchoconstriction in an exposed worker. Further studies are needed to investigate the pathogenetic mechanism triggered by Banha.

Notes: An episode of fever, cough, shortness of breath and leucocytosis developed in a 31-year-old atopic housewife from mould exposure in her home environment is evaluated. A chest radiograph revealed diffuse tiny nodular infiltrations in both whole lung fields. Spirometry revealed a severe restrictive type of ventilation impairment. Bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) showed an increased lymphocyte count with reversed CD4 +/CD8 + ratio and transbronchial lung biopsy showed markedly increased lymphocytic infiltration in alveolar septa. Fungal cultures in the air of her home were positive for Penicillium expansum and other fungi. Double immunodiffusion test with the patient's serum showed two precipitin bands to P. expansum antigens. Her symptoms, abnormal findings of radiograph, and spirometric abnormalities disappeared after 2 months' avoidance. The serum precipitin disappeared after 1 month's avoidance. This study indicates that the patient had hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP) on exposure to P. expansum in her home environment.

Notes: Water vapor permeability (WVP), tensile strength (TS), and elongation (E) were investigated in laminated methyl cellulose/corn zein-fatty acid films. They were prepared by casting corn zein-fatty acid solutions onto methyl cellulose films. WVP decreased as chain length and concentration of fatty acids increased. The TS of laminated edible film containing palmitic acid decreased as palmitic acid increased. The TS of films containing stearic-palmitic acid blends showed similar trends but there were no significant differences among blends. The TS of the film containing lauric acid was maximum at 30% lauric acid concentration. The E values for films containing fatty acids varied inversely with TS.
