Notes: It is found that a reversed-field pinch (RFP) dynamo uniformly generates most of the toroidal flux in a RFP plasma with a high magnetic Reynolds (S) number. Hereafter, this is referred to as the global dynamo. The toroidal flux generated by the global dynamo is proportional to the plasma current. The effective inductance in a RFP plasma increases with S number and remains constant against the changing plasma current. This means that the pinch parameter aitch-theta is held constant, that is, the global dynamo has a self-organizing effect sustaining a particular RFP configuration. By comparing simulation results and analysis of magnetic fluctuations, it is confirmed that a global dynamo is generated by the nonlinear evolution of the single-helicity of the m=1 mode alone.

Notes: We have made a study of reflection high-energy electron diffraction intensity oscillations during the growth of GaAs on singular GaAs (111)A substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. The behavior is quite different from growth of GaAs on (001) orientated substrates in that the oscillation period is growth temperature and As4:Ga flux ratio dependent. We speculate that this is due to the (110)-like configuration of the (111)A 2×2 reconstructed surface, which requires direct interaction of a Ga and an As atom for growth to occur.

Notes: All the reported Japanese patients with group A xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) have two or three mutations at codon 116 in exon 3, codon 228 in exon 6, and the splicing acceptor site of intron 3 of XP group A complementing (XPAC) gene. A homozygote (XP390S) with a nonsense mutation at codon 228 has less severe neurological abnormalities than patients with the splicing mutation at the acceptor site of intron 3. As homozygotes for the nonsense mutation at codon 116, which truncates a carboxyl-terminal site of XPAC protein at an early part of its zinc-finger domain, have not been reported previously, the possible severity of associated neurological abnormalities was not known. We report a group A XP patient, XP180S, who had neurological abnormalities which were more severe than those in patients homozygous for the splicing mutation. The polymerase chain reaction product from exon 3 of the patient's XPAC gene was digested completely into three fragments by MseI restriction endonuclease. Thus, the patient was homozygous for the mutation at codon 116.

Notes: Using a respiratory inductive plethysmograph, we investigated the effects of halothane and sevoflurane on the paediatric respiratory pattern under spontaneous breathing. We measured tidal volume per weight, respiratory rate, partial pressure of end-expiratory carbon dioxide (PetCO2), rib cage contribution to ventilation (%RC) and phase shift between rib cage and abdominal movements at 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5 MAC of these inhalational anaesthetics in oxygen. Both of these anaesthetics increased PetCO2 significantly with increase in depth of anaesthesia; sevoflurane produced more profound respiratory depression than halothane at high MAC. Both agents decreased %RC significantly with increase in depth of anaesthesia; paradoxical respiration occurred in the halothane group at high MAC. The profound respiratory depression of sevoflurane is due to both decreased tidal volume and decreased respiratory rate. The paradoxical respiration under halothane may be attributed to the potent suppression of intercostal muscle function and may be partly due to compensatory sparing effect on respiratory rate, which leads to the increase in airway flow and airway resistance.

Notes: [Auszug] Dentatorubral and pallidoluysian atrophy (DRPLA) is an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder characterized by combined systemic degeneration of the dentatofugal and pallidofugal pathways. We investigated a candidate gene and found that DRPLA patients had an expanded CAG trinucleotide repeat ...

Notes: Abstract We performed dosing experiments to evaluate the bone mass increasing action of a novel, synthetic vitamin D derivative, 2β-(3-hydroxypropoxy)-1α, 25(OH)2D3 (ED-71), in normal and estrogen-deficient rats. The first experiment consisted of 31 Sprague-Dawley rats, 28 weeks of age. The second experiment consisted of 44 animals who were ovariectomized (OVX) or sham operated at the age of 12 weeks. ED-71 was given twice a week for the duration of 12 weeks. At the end of the experiments, serum chemistries were examined and lumbar vertebrae were assessed histomorphometrically. Serum alkaline-phosphatase levels tended to decrease by ED-71 administration in the first experiment and their elevated values after ovariectomy were also depressed by ED-71 in the second experiment. Serum osteocalcin levels, however, increased by the agent. In the first experiment, cancellous bone volume (BV/TV) increased dose dependently. Bone formation rates (BFR/BS) also increased. In the second experiment, BV/TV significantly decreased by ovariectomy and it increased in ED-71-treated groups, but not in 1α-(OH)D3-treated group. BFR/BS increased by ED-71. Activation frequency did not decreased by ED-71 in either experiment. These data clearly demonstrated that ED-71 administration was capable of increasing the bone mass by stimulating bone formation in normal and estrogen-deficient rats.

Notes: Abstract Proto-oncogene c-raf-1, the cellular homologue of the acutely transforming oncogene v-raf, has a central role in the signal tranduction pathways. The growth plate, due to its non-overlapping zones of chondrocyte maturation, provides a physiological in situ model for investigating the role of c-raf-1 in proliferation and differentiation of chondrocytes. In this study, Northern blotting was first performed to examine the expression of mRNA for c-raf-1 in the embryonic chick tibial growth plate. It revealed that the normal levels of c-raf-1 mRNA were associated with the whole growth plate. We then investigated the localization of c-raf-1 mRNA and c-raf-1 protein in the growth plate by in situ hybridization and immunohistochemistry in order to determine whether c-raf-1 is involved in chondrocyte maturation. Our results showed that c-raf-1 mRNA and c-raf-1 protein were detected only in the hypertrophic zone. The data suggest involvement of this proto-oncogene in chondrocyte differentiation and/or hypertrophy rather than in proliferation.

Notes: Abstract Between 1988 and 1993, 16 cases of osteoid osteoma were examined by magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). MRI clearly visualized the extent of inflammation in the bone marrow and soft parts that is difficult to observe with other diagnostic techniques. The degree of inflammation varied among the patients. This might be associated with the anatomical relationship between the nidus and the cortex. The high sensitivity of MRI, unfortunately, may lead to an erroneous interpretation in lesions accompanied by inflammatory responses of the bone marrow or soft parts, such as osteoid osteoma. However, these reactions on MRI may offer a key to the pathogenesis of osteoid osteoma, a unique bone neoplasm.
