Notes: The Km values of 5′-nucleotidase against IMP markedly increased below 6°C in the case of 32°C-acclimated carp muscle microsomes. This caused a break point at 6°C in the Arrhenius plot of 5′-nucleotidase activity against IMP at a low concentration. The discontinuity of temperature dependency was not found when a surfactant had been introduced. Muscle microsomes of carp acclimated at 32°C contained much more cholesterol and saturated fatty acid than those of 10°C-acclimated carp. Therefore, the difference of lipid composition seemed to be closely related to the change in kinetics of microsomal 5′-nucleotidase.

Notes: Critical current densities Jc were measured in as-deposited, c-axis-oriented Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3Ox thin films with Tc values as high as 97 K, which were prepared by metalorganic chemical-vapor deposition. These films showed high Jc ((approximately-greater-than)109 A/m2) at 77.3 K in high magnetic fields (≥1 T, H(parallel)a-b plane). The best values are 3.3×109 A/m2 at 1 T and 9.1×108 A/m2 at 8 T, which are the highest Jc for Bi-oxide thin films among those reported so far. There were no signs of weak links in the Jc(H) behavior, and the surface morphology examined by scanning electron microscopy showed no apparent grain boundaries. The values of Jc decreased sharply when the applied field deviated from the a-b plane, and went to zero at the angles where the field component in the c direction is nearly equal to the irreversibility field Hc2* parallel to the c axis. The angular dependence of Jc of these films is most reasonably explained by the theory of intrinsic pinning.

Notes: summary  The present study examines the influence of a goldbonder and pre-heat treatment of the titanium on the adhesion of porcelain. Three groups of titanium substrates were given various heat treatments, namely; none, 200 ° and 600 °C, respectively before applying goldbonder. The surfaces of the titanium specimens following heat treatment were examined with an electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The adhesion strength was measured by the strain energy release rate (G), which was proposed by Suansuwan N and Swain MV (Int J Prosthodont. 1999;12:547). After bonding porcelain onto titanium substrates with the aid of the goldbonder, the porcelain side of specimens was notched to the interface with a thin diamond saw. Then the samples were subject to a four-point bending test. Following fracture testing, specimens were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and SEM with energy-dispersive spectroscopic analysis (EDS). The mean G-values were 38·87, 28·64 and 16·33 J m−2, respectively. ESCA analysis showed the composition of aluminium of the surface of 600 °C pre-heat treatment became richer than that of the others. SEM images of the fracture surfaces showed that for the 600 °C pre-heat treatment fracture occurred within the oxidation layer on the titanium. High temperature pre-heat treatment prior to bonding significantly reduces porcelain bonded to titanium with the goldbonder. The Influence of GoldbonderTM and Pre-heat Treatment on the Adhesion of Titanium Alloy and Porcelain.

Notes: An anisotropy for threshold current densities for AlGaInP laser diodes with CuPt-type natural superlattice (NSL) in a Ga0.5In0.5P active layer, grown on a (001) GaAs substrate, was observed, for the first time. Threshold current densities (Jth) for laser diodes with stripes in the [1¯10] and [110] direction were 1.35 and 2.10 kA/cm2, respectively. The lasers with a weak NSL formation in the active layer showed a very small anisotropy in Jth. Stripe direction dependence of electroluminescence (EL) polarization properties were also observed for lasers with well-developed NSL. The anisotropies in Jth and EL polarization properties are attributed to the existence of the NSL in the active layer and the appearance asymmetry previously observed in the NSL.

Notes: Abstract Second-order vestibular neurons form the central links of the vestibulo-oculomotor three-neuron arcs that mediate compensatory eye movements. Most of the axons that provide for vertical vestibulo-ocular reflexes ascend in the medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) toward target neurons in the oculomotor and trochlear nuclei. We have now determined the morphology of individual excitatory second-order neurons of the anterior semicircular canal system that course outside the MLF to the oculomotor nucleus. The data were obtained by the intracellular horseradish peroxidase method. Cell somata of the extra-MLF anterior canal neurons were located in the superior vestibular nucleus. The main axon ascended through the deep reticular formation beneath the brachium conjunctivum to the rostral extent of the nucleus reticularis tegmenti pontis, where it crossed the midline. The main axon continued its trajectory to the caudal edge of the red nucleus from where it coursed back toward the oculomotor nucleus. Within the oculomotor nucleus, collaterals reached superior rectus and inferior oblique motoneurons. Some axon branches recrossed the midline within the oculomotor nucleus and reached the superior rectus motoneuron subdivision on that side. Since these neurons did not give off a collateral toward the spinal cord, they were classified as being of the vestibulo-oculomotor type and are thought to be involved exclusively in eye movement control. The signal content and spatial tuning characteristics of this anterior canal vestibulo-oculomotor neuron class remain to be determined.

Notes: Abstract Dantrolene strongly and dose-dependently inhibited histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells induced by anti-IgE. Dantrolene inhibited Ca2+-mobilization from intracellular Ca2+-store as well as histamine release in mast cells activated by anti-IgE, the effect on both of these phenomena being closely correlated. These results suggested that the effect of dantrolene on histamine release from rat mast cell might be due to the inhibition of Ca2+-release from intracellular Ca2+-store.

Notes: Abstract A toxic substance (P-II fraction), fractionated from the pedicellariae of the sea urchinToxopneustes pileulus, dose-dependently caused the histamine release from rat peritoneal mast cells. The histamine release induced by P-II fraction increased with time, while compound 48/80 caused a more rapid histamine release. The dose-response curve for P-II fraction was studied with concentration 0.03–2.0 mg/ml. This reaction was dependent on Ca2+ and temperature. When glucose (5.5. mM) was omitted during the incubation step, the histamine release induced by P-II fraction was significantly reduced as compared to that of compound 48/80. Pyruvate reversed this reduction. On the other hand, the histamine release induced by P-II fraction was effectively potentiated by the addition of glucose (11.0 mM), but not that by compound 48/80. These results suggest that P-II fraction-induced histamine release differs from that of compound 48/80 disregards to the effects of glucose, because this histamine release appears to be more sensitive to the glycolytic pathway than compound 48/80-induced histamine release.
