Notes: Summary Reflex autonomic changes which occur after cigarette smoke enters the upper airways are partially due to peripheral chemoreceptor stimulation. Chemoreceptor denervation attenuates but does not abolish smoke induced bradycardia. Denervation nearly abolishes bradycardia induced by tracheal occlusion. Hypertension accompanies smoke induced apnea but does not occur during tracheal occlusion.

Notes: : Bran content in both wheat-meal and flour was measured using an automated fluorescence microscopic imaging instrument, and correlated with milling extraction, ash content, and test weight values. Quantitative image analysis of the kernel bran content revealed differences in the linear response and slope, when plotted against test weight for common Minnesota HRS wheat varieties or a correlation coefficient of-0.818 for all HRS wheat samples (sample number = 65, p = 0.01). Whole-wheat bran and ash values also correlated significantly (p = 0.01) with the percent milling extraction (-0.927 and -0.687, respectively). The flour bran content was not significantly correlated with flour ash content (0.202).

Notes: : Daily-to-weekly discharge during the snowmelt season is highly correlated among river basins in the upper elevations of the central and southern Sierra Nevada (Carson, Walker, Tuolumne, Merced, San Joaquin, Kings, and Kern Rivers). In many cases, the upper Sierra Nevada watershed operates in a single mode (with varying catchment amplitudes). In some years, with appropriate lags, this mode extends to distant mountains. A reason for this coherence is the broad scale nature of synoptic features in atmospheric circulation, which provide anomalous insolation and temperature forcing that span a large region, sometimes the entire western U.S. These correlations may fall off dramatically, however, in dry years when the snowpack is spatially patchy.

Notes: We show that thermally stimulated luminescence is an important method for detecting insulating impurity phases that commonly occur in high Tc superconductors. The technique is sensitive to impurity phases at 〈1% level with a probe depth of ∼ 1 μm, which is the region of interest for many superconductor applications. Samples of Y2O3, Y2BaCuO5, YBa2Cu3O6.2, BaCO3, Ba3CuO4, BaCuO2, and YBa2Cu3Ox (x≈7) were investigated. All but the high quality sintered pellets of YBa2Cu3Ox exhibited relatively intense luminescence. The absence of luminescence, and thus of insulating phases, is correlated with low values of rf surface resistance.

Notes: The strength of the magnetostrictive material, Terfenol-D, Tb0.27Dy0.73Fe2.0, has been evaluated by measuring the modulus of rupture as a function of the Fe stoichiometry of the compound. It is shown that the strength improves markedly as the Fe concentration decreases from the stoichiometric value of 2.0 in the compound. The increased strength results from the increasing volume fraction of the rare-earth metal phase produced in the Terfenol-D matrix by the solidification process at lower Fe concentrations.

Notes: The high-temperature superconductor YBa2Cu3O7−x has been irradiated in a transmission electron microscope to investigate the effect of high doses of ionizing energy on the microstructure of this material. Electrons of energies low enough to avoid knock-on displacement damage (80 and 100 keV) were used to achieve radiation doses of 1×1012 Gy at 115 K and 2×1013 Gy at room temperature. Using the criteria of twin fading and formation of extended defects, no microstructural damage was observed. These results indicate that YBa2Cu3O7−x is extremely resistant to damage by radiolytic processes.

Notes: The influence of lattice strain and Mg vacancies on the superconducting properties of MgB2 samples has been investigated. High quality samples with sharp superconducting transitions were synthesized. The variations in lattice strain and Mg vacancy concentrations were obtained by varying the synthesis conditions. It was found that high strain (∼1%) and the presence of Mg vacancies (∼5%) resulted in lowering the Tc by only 2 K. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Intermixing of AlGaAs-based interfaces is known to be enhanced by capping wafers with a layer of SiO2. Assuming that this enhancement results from the introduction of additional Ga vacancies into the sample, it is possible to obtain the temperature-dependent equilibrium Ga vacancy diffusivity. Experiments are performed whereby SiO2-capped quantum well samples are annealed at temperatures ranging from 800 to 1025 °C. Calculated photoluminescence shifts are compared with the measured spectra, and a relation for the Ga vacancy diffusivity of the form 0.962 exp(−2.72/kBT) cm2/s is obtained. Using this relation, the equilibrium Ga vacancy concentration can be computed via an ensemble Monte Carlo simulation. The resulting expression is 1.25×1031 exp(−3.28/kBT) cm−3.

Notes: This study assessed the nutritional and biological value of a noncommercial, transgenic line of the Australian sweet lupin, Lupinus angustifolius, (cv. Warrah), produced to increase the methionine content of the seed. An initial experiment demonstrated that differences in the methionine content of the transgenic and nontransgenic control lupins had no apparent influence on the growth of juvenile red seabream fed practical diets. Re-evaluation of the nutritional characteristics of the lupin meals with subsequent digestibility studies allowed the determination of the digestible value of the protein and energy content of each of the varieties. The digestible protein content of either variety was similar, however significant differences in the digestible energy value of each variety existed (56.3% cf. 64.0%). This re-evaluation of the nutritional value of the genetically manipulated (GM) and non-GM lupin varieties enabled the reformulation of diets on a digestible protein and energy basis. A second growth trial was undertaken using sub-satietal pair-feeding regimes, with the experiment also involving protein-restrictive diets to allow expression of the differences in the methionine content of the transgenic and nontransgenic lupin meals. A significant benefit of the enhanced methionine level in the transgenic lupin was observed. It is argued that in the high-protein fish diets used, the importance of amino acid composition is relatively limited. Economic modelling of the potential value of the increased methionine in the transgenic lupin suggests that this will have limited benefit for aquaculture industries, and that greater value would be attributable to higher protein and energy levels in ingredients.

Notes: Overfishing and habitat destruction in the early 1900s devastated lake sturgeon (Acipenser fulvescens) populations in the Great Lakes. Although a comprehensive restoration strategy for this species was recently drafted by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources, a lack of current data on Great Lakes sturgeon stocks has hindered rehabilitation efforts. Historically, the Detroit River supported one of the largest lake sturgeon populations in the Great Lakes; however, little is known about the current population or its habitat use. The main objective of this study was to determine if lake sturgeon spawns in the Detroit River. As part of a larger study, baited setlines were used to capture lake sturgeon in the Detroit River in the spring and summer of 2000 and 2001. In each year of the study, ultrasonic transmitters were surgically implanted in 10 adult fish to track their movements, evaluate habitat use and identify possible spawning sites. Using telemetry and egg mats to verify spawning activity, one spawning site was located and verified in the Detroit River. Spawning was verified by recovering sturgeon eggs deposited on egg collection mats anchored at the site. Telemetry data suggested that several other possible spawning sites also may exist, however, spawning activity was not verified at these sites.
