Notes: Objectives The International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) questionnaires have shown that the prevalence of childhood asthma is increasing worldwide. Although Asian countries used to have lower prevalence rates of allergic disease than Western countries, this prevalence is increasing in several Asian countries. To determine whether the prevalence of childhood asthma is changing in Korean adolescents, we compared findings from nationwide cross-sectional surveys in 1995 and 2000 on populations of middle-school children using the Korean version of the ISAAC questionnaire. Methods We developed Korean versions of the ISAAC written (WQ) and video (AVQ) questionnaires for allergic diseases. In 1995, the enrolled population consisted of 15 481 children, ages 12–15, and encompassing all three grades in middle school, selected from 34 schools across the nation; the response rate was 97.3%. In 2000, 15 894 children were selected from 31 of the same schools, and the response rate was 96.4%. The SAS system version 8.0 was utilized for all statistical analyses. Results The WQ showed that the lifetime and 12-month prevalence of wheeze did not change from 1995 to 2000. While the 12-month prevalence rates of sleep disturbed by wheezing and night cough increased, the rates of severe attack of wheezing and exercise-induced wheeze did not change, over this period of time. The lifetime prevalence of asthma diagnosis, however, increased significantly, from 2.7% in 1995 to 5.3% in 2000, as did the 12-month prevalence of asthma treatment, from 1.0% in 1995 to 1.9% in 2000. The AVQ also showed increases in the lifetime and 12-month prevalence rates of wheeze at rest, exercise-induced wheeze, nocturnal wheeze, nocturnal cough, and severe wheeze over this period of time. These were especially because of significant increases in the Provincial cities of Korea. Interestingly, the 12-month prevalence of wheeze was consistently high in Cheju with low air pollution indices, whereas this rate was low in Ulsan and Ansan with very high air pollution indices. Risk factor analysis showed that body mass index (BMI), passive smoking, and living with a dog or cat, but not air pollution, were associated with higher risk of wheeze. Conclusions In the 5-year period from 1995 to 2000, the prevalence of asthma symptoms has increased in Korean adolescents, much of it because of increases in Provincial Centers. BMI, passive smoking, and living with a dog or cat are important risk factors. Environmental factors other than air pollution may be associated with increases in asthma, especially in Provincial Centers.

Notes: White-colored materials synthesized by a thermal annealing of milled GaN powders at 930 °C in a nitrogen atmosphere were identified to be monoclinic β-Ga2O3 nanowires by x-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy revealed that these nanowires are single nanocrystals, and energy dispersive x-ray indicated that these nanomaterials are free of any metals. In addition, bundles of these crystalline nanowires in the rectangular-pole shape are a few centimeters in length.© 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: We report low-temperature conductance measurement on a Coulomb-blockaded dot in a silicon-on-insulator-based single-electron transistor with in-plane side gates. The linear conductance for 4.2 K at zero magnetic field exhibits up to three paired peaks, indicating simple alternating odd (spin 1/2)-even(spin 0) filling. Three intrapair spacings are found to be nearly a constant value, corresponding to the single charging energy U, whereas two interpair spacings are different which are associated with U+ΔE1 and U+ΔE2, i.e., successive quantized level spacings added to U. The quantized level spacings were also revealed in the nonlinear current staircases. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

Notes: Abstract As an aid to the interpretation of functional images, cross-modality coregistration of functional and anatomical images has grown rapidly. Various ways of easily interpreting and visualising coregistered images have previously been investigated; for their display, an intensity-weighted temporally alternating method is used. For brain images, geometric registration involves the automatic alignment method, using the head scalp boundary extracted from the sinogram of a PET emission scan and a surface-matching algorithm; images of the chest or abdomen are registered semi-automatically using a paired point matching algorithm. For the simultaneous display of geometrically registered images, rapid image switching is applied; both images are written with independent colour scales. The rapidly alternating display of two images, synchronised with monitor scanning, induces the fusion of images in the human visual perception system. The accuracy of registration of PET and MRI images is within 2 mm for two point sets. A resulting image is intensified by weighting the display time and/or controlling the intensity map of each image with the degree of interest. This method may be useful for the interpretation and visualisation of coregistered images.

Notes: Abstract Neutron activation analysis has been applied to determine 12 elements, viz. Na, Mn, As, Fe, Co, Zn, Se, Sc, Cr, Sb, Hf and Ta in high-purity Ga2O3. The first 7 elements could be determined by anion exchange separation and isopropyl ether extraction, and the last 8 elements by instrumental method. It is recommended that the first 3 elements are determine by one of the radiochemical modes and the others by the instrumental method.

Notes: Abstract Radiochemical separation methods have been applied for the neutron activation analysis of impurities in four high-purity refractory metals, Ta, Nb, W and Mo. Impurities in the metals of Ta, Nb and W can be separated into groups using anion exchange resin with HF and/or a mixture of HF acid and HCl, but those in Mo is done using both anion and cation exchange resins. The coprecipitation of U with Th in HF media is also investigated.
