Notizen: Semolina extrudates were reshaped, immediately after extrusion to form 0.5 mm thick × 2 mm wide × 130 mm long strips. Moisture content (W) was adjusted to 5 to 39% (dry basis) equilibrating in desiccators containing saturated salt solutions. The following tensile rheological properties of the prepared samples were determined at room temperature (21-24°C) using a Rheometrics solid analyzer: Young modulus (E), yield stress (σy), fracture stress (σc) and fracture stain (ɛc). Each of E, σy and σc was fitted by a semilogorithmically linear function of W with a negative slope. The property ɛc fitted two semilogarithmically linear functions: for W 〈 24.2% a line with a positive slope and for W 〉 24.2% a line with near zero slope. Such data for moisture ranges used in conventional pasta drying can help to optimize conditions for pasta production without stress cracking.

Notizen: Summary We describe a 24-year-old woman with acute hepatitis B virus infection who developed extensive erythematous papules in a photolocalized distribution. The cruption occurred during the prodromal phase, and subsided with the development of jaundice. She had had moderate sunburn 18 days prior to the development of the eruption, which was accentuated on the tanned area. To our knowledge, this is the first case of a photolocalized eruption due to hepatitis B virus infection.

Notizen: We describe an elderly woman who presented with numerous papular, keratolic lesions on the scalp. Histology of a biopsy specimen revealed epidermal invaginations, with large keratotic plugs, at the sites of hair follicles. In addition, there was acantholytic epidermal cell separation at a suprabasal level, and a large number of corps ronds were present, above the split. It is likely that this case represents a rare presentation of acantholytic dyskeratosis. The relationship to other conditions which show acanlholysis and dyskeratosis histologically is discussed.

Notizen: The results of Br K-edge X-ray absorption measurements of 1-bromonaphthalene dissolved in supercritical fluid Xe are reported. As the pressure of Xe confined in a high-pressure cell is increased, the absorption spectrum of bromonaphthalene gradually appears, showing that Xe in the supercritical fluid state solvates the bromonaphthalene molecule. The spectrum of the dissolved sample shows a remarkable difference from that of the pure liquid sample in the near-edge region of the X-ray absorption spectrum, reflecting the interaction of the solute material with solvent Xe. Ab initio full multiple-scattering calculations can reproduce the spectral features qualitatively. A large value of the Debye–Waller factor must be introduced to give the best fit, corresponding to a large degree of spatial disorder and violent thermal vibration of the Xe atoms around the Br atom.

Notizen: Abstract In order to test the possibility of utilizing high pressure in bioscience and biotechnology, a simple method for high-pressure generation and its use for microbial inactivation have been studied. When a pressure vessel was filled with water, sealed tightly and cooled to sub-zero temperatures, high pressure was generated in the vessel. The pressure generation was 60 MPa at −5 °C, 103 MPa at −10 °C, and 140 MPa at −15 °C, −20 °C, and −22 °C. The high pressure generated inactivated microorganisms effectively: yeasts (Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Zygosaccharomyces rouxii), bacteria (Lactobacillus brevis and Eschericia coli), and fungi (Aspergillus niger and Aspergillus oryzae) were completely inactivated when stored in sealed vessels −20 °C for 24 h. However, Staphylococcus aureus was only partly inactivated under the same conditions. This method opens up a new application of high pressure for storing, transporting, and sterilizing of foods and biological materials.

Notizen: Abstract. It has been demonstrated that an iodinated contrast medium (CM) causes release of potassium into blood vessel lumina, resulting in an increase in serum potassium. The purpose of the present study was to assess whether this potassium release is due to hemolysis. Fresh human blood was mixed in vitro with CM at a ratio of 10:2. Potassium release rates were determined, and serum haptoglobin and free hemoglobin were measured after 30 min of exposure to CM. To compare the potassium release curve between CM exposure and true hemolysis induced by distilled water, fresh human blood was also mixed with distilled water. The level of serum haptoglobin decreased due to hemodilution. Changes in haptoglobin were not correlated with potassium release rates. The serum free hemoglobin level did not increase significantly, and there was no correlation between changes in the free hemoglobin level and the rate of potassium release. Hemolysis caused by water occurred instantaneously, whereas potassium release caused by CM was a slow response, which was linearly correlated with exposure time. Potassium release from blood cannot be explained by hemolysis.

Notizen: Abstract. It has been thought that neurohypophysial involvement manifesting as central diabetes insipidus in lymphocytic hypophysitis is rare. The radiological and clinicopathological features of two cases represent a variant of lymphocytic adenohypophysitis and/or lymphocytic infundibulo-neurohypophysitis are discussed.

Notizen: Abstract. Background: To define the signs useful for differentiating between gallbladder–enteric fistula (GB-EF) and common bile duct–enteric fistula (CBD-EF) on computed tomography (CT) because the prognosis and management of the two are different. Methods: CT scans in 13 patients with pneumobilia, who had not had surgical biliary–enteric anastomosis and endoscopic sphincterotomy, were reviewed. The presence of fistula itself, the location of air in the biliary system, and the appearance of the gallbladder were assessed. Results: The causes of pneumobilia were GB-EF in seven patients, CBD-EF in three patients, emphysematous cholecystitis (EC) in one patient, gallbladder cancer (GBC) in one patient, and incompetent sphincter of Oddi in one patient. In three of seven GB-EF patients (43%) and in none of the three CBD-EF patients (0%), the fistula itself was detected. Air was detected in the common bile duct in four of seven GB-EF (57%) and in all three CBD-EF (100%) patients, and GBC. In six of seven GB-EF (86%) and in one of three CBD-EF (33%) patients, the gallbladder was contracted. Thus, the location of air and the contraction of gallbladder were useful signs to differentiate GB-EF from CBD-EF. Conclusion: CT can distinguish between GB-EF and CBD-EF.
