Notes: Summary The localisation and distribution of neuropeptide Y (NPY)-like immunoreactivity were studied by use of immunohistochemical methods in gut tissues from 19 patients with Hirschsprung's disease, including 4 cases of long segment aganglionosis. In the normoganglionic segment, immunoreactive cell bodies and nonvaricose processes were seen within both myenteric and submucous plexuses. A scarce supply of varicose fibres was found in the lamina propria mucosae, muscularis mucosae and longitudinal muscle layer. NPY fibres were more frequently encountered in the circular muscle layer, although with a weakly immunostaining intensity. In addition, blood vessels in the submucosal connective tissue were surrounded by a typical plexus of varicose, NPY-positive fibres. Immunoreactive endocrine cells could be detected in the colonic epithelium. In the aganglionic segment, numerous nerve fasciculi comprising a small to moderate number of NPY fibres with varicosities were observed throughout the entire layer of the colonic wall. A few varicose, NPY-positive fibres were also contained in the relatively large, hypertrophic nerve fasciculi located in the intermuscular zone and submucosal connective tissue. NPY-immunoreactive fasciculi were more densely distributed in the distal aganglionic segment than in the proximal aganglionic one. On the other hand, the distribution of NPY-positive fibres in long segment aganglionosis was quite different from that in short segment type; in cases of long segment type, no immunoreactive nerve fibres were detected within the circular muscle layer of the proximal aganglionic segment near the oligoganglionic segment and only a few fibres were observed within the hypertrophic nerve bundle of the intermuscular zone. The present results suggest that NPY-like immunoreactive nerves in the human colon have a dual origin of intrinsic and extrinsic elements. The origin and nature of extrinsic NPY nerve fibres in the human colon are discussed.

Notes: We present the results of luminescence studies for free-standing CdZnS/ZnS strained layer superlattices (SLSs). The band discontinuity is estimated by an analysis of the luminescence results in terms of a finite-potential well model. CdZnS/ZnS SLSs are grown by metal-organic vapor phase epitaxy at 350 °C on (100) GaAs. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements of the CdZnS/ZnS SLS at 1.4 K show intense, sharp excitonic emission in the blue-ultraviolet spectral region. With decreasing CdZnS well width, the PL peaks shift to higher energy. The quantum transition energies are calculated, including the effect of exciton binding energy and elastic strain. A free-standing SLS is assumed. In a Cd0.3Zn0.7S/ZnS SLS, the analysis of the data yields a zero-stress band discontinuity of ΔEc=461 meV and ΔEv=88 meV, which is in extremely good agreement with the data calculated from Harrison's model (465 and 84 meV, respectively). The band discontinuity over the entire Cd composition range is also estimated.

Notes: The reflectivity of commercially available vacuum-evaporated platinum mirrors in photon energy was measured from 1.8–8 keV. The measured reflectivity was compared with that calculated using a graded refractive index model. For the two mirrors measured, assuming an rms surface roughness of 1.6 and 3.4 nm gave good fit of the measured to calculated reflectivity. These values are almost identical to the roughness measured by scanning tunneling microscopy. Using this model, the reflectivity of conventional vacuum-evaporated platinum mirrors in the few-keV range could be explained.

Notes: Abstract Expressions are derived for the force and potential energy of the electrical double layer interaction between two parallel plates of different nature, i. e., an ion-penetrable plate and an ion-impenetrable plate. The latter may have either constant surface potential or constant surface charge density. It is shown that when the ion-impenetrable plate has a constant surface potential, the interaction force may, under certain conditions, become attractive even if the surface potentials of the two plates at infinite separation are of the same sign. In contrast, when the ion-impenetrable plate has a constant surface charge density, the interaction force may, under certain conditions, become repulsive even if the two plates at infinite separation are of opposite sign. This means that an ion-penetrable plate shows a dual behavior. That is, under certain conditions, it behaves like a solid plate with constant surface potential or surface charge density, depending on whether it interacts with a solid plate having a constant surface potential or a constant surface charge density.

Notes: Abstract As the first step in the epidemiological evaluation of the effectiveness of mass screening for colorectal cancer, we compared clinicopathological features and survival rates of patients with cancer detected by mass screening (screened group) with those for patients treated in our outpatient clinic in the same period (outpatient group). The screened group consisted of 53 patients with colorectal cancer detected by 2-day or 3-day screening for fecal occult blood by guaiac slides. Their background factors were comparable to those of 120 patients of the outpatient group in regard to age, sex ratio, location of cancer, and histological type of cancer. In the screened group, 90% of patients had no complaints, and positive occult blood tests led to the detection of cancers. More than 60% of the patients had Dukes' A and B1 early cancers while only about 30% had advanced cancers. In the outpatient group, nearly 90% of patients were symptomatic, most commonly from rectal bleeding. Early-stage cancers made up only 20%, and large, advanced-stage cancers accounted for 80%. The 5-year survival rate of the screened group was 91.5%, being significantly higher than the 60% survival rate for the outpatient group. It is anticipated that mass screening for colorectal cancer by guaiac fecal occult blood testing will significantly reduce the mortality due to this neoplasm.

Notes: Abstract Somatic hybrid plants were regenerated following electrofusion between leaf mesophyll protoplasts of P. hybrida (2n = 14) and a wild sexually incompatible species, P. variabilis (2n = 18). The selection of hybrids was based on the hybrid vigour, expressed both in the growth of the callus and at the shoot formation stage, resulting from the combination of parental genomes. Calli exhibiting vigorous growth were selected, and upon transfer to regeneration medium gave rise to shoots. Four regenerated plants from three calli had morphological characteristics intermediate between those of the parents. The hybrid nature of these plants was confirmed by chromosome counts as well as isozyme and DNA analyses. They had amphidiploid chromosome numbers (2n = 32) and were fertile. Following self-pollination and backcrossing with P. variabilis, large numbers of F2 and BC1 seedlings were obtained.

Notes: Summary Mesophyll protoplasts of tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum) and pepino (Solanum muricatum) were fused by using an electrofusion method and cultured in modified MS medium supplemented with naphthaleneacetic acid and kinetin, in which only pepino and somatic hybrid protoplasts could divide. Somatic hybrid plants showing intermediate characteristics in morphology were regenerated from the calli exhibiting vigorous growth in contrast with those of pepino. The hybrid nature of these plants was confirmed by cytological observation and biochemical analyses of phosphoglucomutase isozymes and the fraction-1-protein. The regenerated somatic hybrids grew to flowering stage and set fruits.

Notes: Abstract The potential energy of the total interaction between two spherical colloidal particles of different nature is calculated, i. e., of an ion-penetrable particle and an ion-impenetrable solid particle having a constant surface potential or constant surface charge density. The criteria for heterocoagulation are derived. The obtained results suggest a possibility of selective coagulation in the mixed system.
