    Notes: Summary An immunohistochemical study was made of ten cases of asymptomatic and three cases of symptomatic Rathke's cleft cyst. The cysts in the asymptomatic cases had monolayer columnar or cuboidal epithelium. Within the epithelium, cells which were positive for at least one of the pituitary hormones were found. The rate of positive reactions for these six pituitary hormones was between 70% and 100%. In contrast, the cysts in the symptomatic cases had an epithelium which was partly stratified squamous and partly squamous epithelium, and none of the pituitary hormones were found in them. Therefore, when a Rathke's cleft cyst enlarges to the extent that clinical symptoms are produced, we consider that changes have already occurred in structure and function of the cyst epithelium. In addition, we believe there is a tendency for monolayer epithelia to undergo squamous metaplasia and for cells which are positive for pituitary hormones to change into non-granulated cells.

    Notes: Summary In order to identify the pretectal nucleus which contains pupillomotor cells in the rat, cells were sought which were sensitive to changes in luminance level at the eye. Two types were found: Luminance detectors which showed a graded increase in firing with increase in luminance, and darkness detectors which showed a graded increase in firing rate with graded dimming of luminance intensity. All luminance detectors were located in the olivary pretectal nucleus, whereas darkness detectors were located in the posterior pretectal nucleus. Consensual pupil responses were recorded in conscious normal and sympathectomised rats using an infra-red sensitive T.V. pupillometer. Pupil diameter varied 2mm in an approximately linear fashion over six log units range in luminance intensity. Sympathectomy produced a general constriction of the pupil, but the overall response to light was unaffected. The changes in pupil size occurred over the same range of luminance that the firing rates of both luminance and darkness detectors changed. The olivary pretectal nucleus may therefore be involved in pupilloconstruction in the light, and the posterior pretectal nucleus, with pupillodilation in the dark.

    Notes: Summary The luminance detectors in the olivary pretectal nucleus, which are likely candidates mediating the pupillary light reflex, responded to all frequencies of sinusoidally modulated light up to 12–25 Hz. At low frequencies (0.05–4.0 Hz) the luminance detectors responded with modulated firing to different stimulation rates. The modulation depth of the cell response increased with the increase in stimulation frequency up to 20 Hz, then rapidly fell. There was a delay between the peak intensity of the stimulus and the peak firing of cell response of about 30–40 ms. The amplitudes of the consensual pupil responses to the same sinusoidal stimulus, on the other hand, decreased with an increase in frequency and no discernible response was recorded above 2 Hz. The pupil responses were little affected by sympathectomy. The differences in the frequency response characteristics of luminance detectors and the pupil were attributed to the sluggish dynamic properties of the pupil muscles. This was demonstrated using an electronic model of the iris muscle which modified the responses of the luminance detectors giving output waveforms broadly resembling pupil responses to square and sinusoidally modulated lights.

    Notes: Abstract High-dose immunoglobulin (HD-Ig) therapy was given to an infant with autoimmune neutropenia (AIN), and antineutrophil autoantibodies (ANAA). The patient's absolute neutrophil count in peripheral blood increased from 300/ mm3 to 3000–4000/mm3 7 days after treatment. Although the neutrophil count gradually decreased thereafter, transient increases were observed after each single booster infusion repeated at 3-week intervals. By continuing this treatment, clinical symptoms were markedly alleviated, and the patient's susceptibility to infection was reduced. The increase in neutrophils showed a positive correlation with the increase in serum IgG, and with the increase in the ratio of T helper/T suppressor cells. The neutrophil-bound IgG level and serum lysozyme level were decreased after HD-Ig therapy.

    Notes: To answer the question of whether or not polymorphism exists among HLA-DR2 molecules derived from cells homozygous for HLA-DR2, but expressing different HLA-D specificities, HLA-DR2 molecules were isolated from HLA-Dw2 and HLA-Dw12 homozygous cells using a monoclonal antibody operationally monospecific for HLA-DR2, and were compared to each other by two-dimensional gel eletrophoresis. No electrophoretically discernible polymorphism was found in either the heavy or the light chain subunits of the HLA-DR2 molecules. These findings are in marked contrast with previous observations that each of the HLA-DR4-associated HLA-D clusters expresses an electrophoretically distinct HLA-DR4 light chain.

    Notes: A method for evaluating localized grain boundary (GB) trap states in polycrystalline–silicon thin-film transistors (poly-Si TFTs) is proposed. Field effects in poly-Si TFTs are analyzed by decomposition of the two-dimensional Poisson's equation. This analysis gives the theoretical basis for evaluating the localized GB trap state density. The trap states are evaluated with the GB barrier potential given by the activation energy of the effective mobility and with the surface potential calculated from the capacitance–voltage characteristics in poly-Si TFTs. This evaluating method was applied to several different types of poly-Si TFTs fabricated with excimer laser annealing crystallization processes. This method has succeeded experimentally in eliminating the error effects related to oxide–semiconductor interface trap states and in clarifying that the GB barrier potential has a peak in its gate bias dependence. This method has also elucidated that the GB trap state density has almost the same value independent of the grain size when the hydrogenation efficiency in poly-Si is in the same level between TFTs. The good agreement of the simulated and the measured drain currents confirm the validity of this method. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Photon-induced current (Iph) in polycrystalline-silicon thin-film transistors (poly-Si TFTs) has been investigated using a line-shaped light beam scanning method. In the off-state region, photon-excited carriers in the channel region diffuse to the drain with the diffusion length independent of the poly-Si grain size. The diffusion length is also independent whether poly-Si is hydrogenated or not. This phenomenon is observed in both n-channel and p-channel TFTs. In the subthreshold region, Iph follows the general transport equation in poly-Si. In the inversion region, Iph is proportional only to the total amount of excited carriers in the channel. © 2001 American Institute of Physics.
