    Notes: Segregation and transport coefficients of impurities at the Si/SiO2 interface have been studied. A brief model has been proposed which relates the two coefficients to the oxidation rate and the impurity concentrations at both sides of a Si/SiO2 interface. The model enables us to obtain the transport coefficients from the measured impurity profiles for the first time. The transport coefficients of arsenic and phosphorus are, for example, 0.12 and 5.0 μm/min at 1100 °C, respectively. The segregation coefficients can be also calculated from this model. They are more than 1000 for arsenic and phosphorus, and less than 1 for boron at 1000–1100 °C.

    Notes: A graded gap quantum well structure, where the band gap is linearly changing along the growth direction, is proposed for the enhancement of quantum confined Stark effect. Theoretical calculations show that the ground-state exciton peak energy shifts by a larger amount than in a usual square-shaped quantum well under an applied electric field. The wave function modifications in this quantum well result in a smaller decrease of the exciton oscillator strength, according to the electric field applied. These effects reveal the possibility of achieving high-performance optical modulators or other devices which utilize the quantum confined Stark effect.

    Notes: summary  This study investigated the relation between periodontal condition and biting ability in a Chinese population using the pressure-detecting sheet. A total of 142 subjects residing in Nanchang, Jiangxi province, China, participated in the study. The examination included probing pocket depth (PD), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing and coronal caries teeth. Biting abilities per person, biting force, biting pressure and occlusal contact area were measured using the sheet. Number of teeth present showed positive correlation with biting force and occlusal contact area, but were negatively correlated with biting pressure. No significant correlation was observed between the mean PD, percentage of pocket ≥ 4 mm, bleeding index and any of biting abilities. The mean CAL showed a significantly negative correlation with biting force and occlusal contact area. Multiple stepwise regression analysis selected the number of teeth present, sex and age as the significant factors affecting the biting ability. However, no periodontal indices were picked up as the significantly contributing factor. There appears to be little effect of periodontal condition on biting ability. Ageing was selected as a contributing factor to reduction in the Chinese adults, but not in the Japanese population.

    Notes: Summary Effects of α-galactosidase (from green coffee beans) digestion on lectin staining were examined in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human pancreatic tissues from individuals of blood-group B and AB. Digestion with the enzyme resulted in almost complete loss of Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin I-B4(GSAI-B4) staining in the acinar cells with concomitant appearance of Ulex europaeus agglutinin-I(UEA-I) staining in the corresponding cells. In addition, reactivity with soybean agglutinin(SBA) was also imparted by the enzyme digestion in GSAI-B4 positive acinar cells. β-Galactosidase digestion following α-galactosidase digestion neither reduced the reactivity with SBA nor induced the reactivity with Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin-II(GSA-II) in GSAI-B4 positive cells, while in UEA-I positive cells, both reduction of SBA reactivity and appearance of GSA-II reactivity occurred after simple β-galactosidase digestion as well as sequential digestion with α- and β-galactosidase. However, when α-l-fucosidase digestion procedure was inserted between α- and β-galactosidase digestion, UEA-I staining imparted by α-galactosidase digestion was markedly decreased in intensity and GSA-II reactivity was appeared in GSAI-B4 positive acinar cells. Furthermore, after sequential digestion with α-galactosidase and fucosidase, reactivity with peanut agglutinin(PNA) was revealed in GSAI-B4 positive acinar cells as well as UEA-I positive cells in secretors. In non-secretors, strong PNA staining was usually observed in the acinar cells throughout the glands without enzyme digestion. These results confirmed that the β-galactosidase induced GSA-II reactivity and the fucosidase induced PNA reactivity are due to precursors of different kinds of blood-group determinants and suggest that at least two kinds of B antigen determinants, i.e. Gal(α1-3)[Fuc(α1-2)]Gal(β1-3,4)GlcNac and Gal(α1-3)-[Fuc(α1-2)]Gal(β1-3)GalNAc are produced in GSAI-B4 positive acinar cells. The synthesis of the latter type of B antigen is assumed to be controlled under the secretory gene in human pancreas.

    Notes: Summary Histochemical analyses of the chemical structures of sugar sequences with or without blood group specificity were carried out by combined stepwise digestion of tissue sections with exo-and endoglycosidases and subsequent lectin stainings in formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded human pancreas. In acinar cells from blood group A or AB secretor individuals, sequential digestion with α-N-acetylgalactosaminidase and α-L-fucosidase imparted reactivity with peanut agglutinin (PNA) in cells reactive with Dolichos biflorus agglutinin as well as those with Ulex europaeus agglutinin I(UEA-I). Simple fucosidase digestion imparted the PNA reactivity only in UEA-I reactive cells. Sequential digestion with α-galactosidase and fucosidase likewise liberated the PNA binding sites in Griffonia simplicifolia agglutinin I-B4 reactive cells from blood group B and AB secretors. Sialidase digestion liberated the PNA binding sites not only in acinar cells but also intercalated duct cells, islet cells of Langerhans and endothelial cells. The PNA reactivity obtained by these enzyme digestions was eliminted by endo-α-N-acetylgalactosaminidase (endo-GalNAcdase) digestion. Preexisting PNA affinity in acinar cells from nonsecretors was also susceptible to endo-GalNAcdase treatment. Following the endo-GalNAcdase digestion, fucosidase or sialidase digestion recovered the PNA reactivity in acinar cells from nonsecretors. These results show that ABH determinants carried on O-glycosidically linked type 3 chain (D-galactose-(β1-3)-N-acetyl-D-galactosamineα1-serine or threonine) are secreted in pancreatic acinar cells and suggest that product coded by the secretor gene is required for the complete conversion of type 3 precursor chains into H determinants.

    Notes: Summary We investigated the localization of blood-group antigens A, B, and H in human labial salivary and submandibular glands by applying a postembedding immunogold method using monoclonal antibodies in combination with the streptavidin-biotin bridge technique. The H, A, and B antigens were only detected in mature secretory granules (SGs), which were mainly found in cells in the late phase of the maturation cycle. In immature SGs, which were present in cells in the early or middle phases of the maturation cycle, these antigens were not detected. All other cytoplasmic organelles were not labeled by the monoclonal antibodies used. In blood-group-O secretors, H antigen was present in almost all of the mature SGs. In blood-group-A secretors, the labelling for H antigen exhibited a mosaic-like pattern, i.e. only some of the mature SGs contained H antigen. With respect to the A and B antigens, a similar mosaic-like pattern of staining was observed in blood-group-A and-B secretors, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the distribution of blood-group antigens A, B, and H in human tissues has been demonstrated at the electron-microscope-level using monoclonal antibodies.

    Notes: Abstract The influence of repeated hypoxia on the development of haemoglobin (Hb) subtypes and on extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) was investigated in young Wistar rats of different ages. The rats were exposed to hypercapnic/hypoxic and to “simple” hypoxic conditions. The results obtained were compared to those of an untreated age-matched control group. Different globin chains were measured using HPLC and time-of-flight (TOF) mass analysis. The number of EMH cells was evaluated by cell counting. By determining the proportions of α- and β-chains, fetal, neonatal and mature types of globin chain composition could be differentiated. The β-2 chain levels were significantly higher in hypercapnic/hypoxic environments than in the controls and simple hypoxic environments. The numbers of EMH cells in the two groups subjected to hypercapnia/hypoxia decreased significantly more slowly compared to the controls and simple hypoxia groups. Therefore, the development of Hb subtypes and the EMH activity in rats were influenced by both repeated hypercapnia and hypoxia.

    Notes: Abstract Images of a flare and active regions were obtained in the extreme ultraviolet emission lines such as CIII 977 Å, Ne VIII 770 Å, and HI Lβ, and hydrogen Lyman continua with a spatial resolution of less than ten seconds of arc together with one-dimensional scanning at 1650 Å. A microchannel plate was used as a detector, and pointing accuracy was, for about half of the observation time, around 0.5 arc sec. The relationship between the shape of the flare and the structure of the photospheric magnetic field is discussed. A map of the electron temperature distribution derived from the intensity ratio of the Lyman continua at 880 Å and 815 Å showed a lower temperature in regions of higher activity. A very small geometrical thickness of 50–500 m in the C III emitting region of the flare was found. And the layer emitting the continuum in 1650 Å is shown to be at a temperature of 5300 K in the flare and 4700 K in active regions.

    Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Bei 168 nicht verwandten Deutschen wurden die Orosomucoid (ORM)-Typen mittels isoelektrischer Fokussierung und Printimmunfixation untersucht. Zwei neue Allele, vorläufig ORM1*14 and ORM2*13, wurden beobachtet. Die Isoelektrofokussierungs-Methode wurde mit Erfolg zur ORM1-Typisierung an Blutspuren angewandt. Jeder Phänotyp konnte an bis 130°C, bis zu 30 min erhitzten Blutspuren sicher nachgewiesen werden. Die Resultate zeigen, daß der ORM1-Polymorphismus ein neues und aussagekräftiges genetisches Merkmalsystem für die Serumgruppen-Typisierung an Blutspuren ist.
    Notes: Summary The genetic polymorphism of serum orosomucoid (ORM) was studied in 168 unrelated German individuals using isoelectric focusing followed by immunoprinting. Two new alleles, tentatively designated ORM1*14 and ORM2*13, were identified. The method was successfully applied to demonstrate ORM1 types in dried bloodstains. Each type of ORM1 was also correctly determined in bloodstains heated at 130°C for 30 min. The results indicated that ORM1 is a new powerful genetic marker system for the grouping of bloodstains.
