Notes: Summary A case of fourth ventricle cysticercosis treated with praziquantel is presented. The disappearance of the lesion six months after the treatment was demonstrated by CT scan. A review of the literature indicates that this is a very exceptional result, because with recently intraventricular cysticercosis was considered to be non-responsive to praziquantel treatment, making surgery necessary.

Notes: A liquid-He/liquid-N2 cryostat system has been developed to freeze D2 gas and extrude fibers of solid deuterium into a vacuum chamber. Fibers that are 40 μm in diameter and 10 cm long have been successfully and routinely produced. The fibers are observed to remain constant in physical dimensions for several minutes. A fiber will be used as the electrical load for a pulsed power machine in a program investigating the properties of dense, ohmically heated plasmas for controlled thermonuclear fusion.

Notes: The role of CD4+ T lymphocytes in the resistance of BALB/c mice to Trypanosoma cruzi was examined by in vivo depletion using monoclonal anti-CD4 antibodies (MoAbs)〈. When the administration of MoAbs was initiated 2 days before, or 5 to 12 days after the infeetion (dpi) with 50 bloodstream-from trypomastigotes of the Tulahun strain, mice showed an enhanced susceptibility to the parasite. Speeific IgM. but not IgM responses, were inhibited in anti-CD4-treated and infected miceHowever, when anti-CD4 treatment of mice was delayed until the 8th week of infection. neither a reactivation of the infection as determined by mortality or parasitaemia. nor a modulation of the titre of anti- T. cruzi IgG antibodies was detected. Furthermore, mice chronically infeeted with T. cruzi and deprived of CD4 or T cells resisted the challenge with 50,000 trypomastigotes (approximately 1000 LD50)Secondary antibody responses against parasite antigens were inhibited after in vitro depletion of CD4+ cells in chronically infected mice before boosting with T. cruzi antigens. However, recipients of CD4 or T-cell-depleled spleen cells from mice chronieally infected with T. cruzi were protected when challenged with the parasiteThe possibility that the parasite control is maintained by long-lived B cells capable of rapid differentiation into IgG-secreting plasma cells in the absence of T helper cells is discussed considering the present data

Notes: Summary Sphenoidal aspergillosis is an unusual cause of sella turcica enlargement. Pituitary abscess secondary to Aspergillus had been reported. In the present case, a woman with sphenoid sinus aspergillosis mimicked a pituitary tumor. This patient survived her infection with intact pituitary function following a transsphenoidal approach. No postoperative amphotericine-B and 5-fluorocytosine were necessary. CT scan revealed a mass occupying the sphenoid sinus extending to the sella turcica. Factors that should alert the clinican to the presence of a sphenoidal and pituitary abscess in a patient with sella turcica enlargement are prior episodes of sinusitis, meningitis and immunosuppression and, as in the present case, hyperglycemia.

Notes: Abstract The in vitro activity of polysomal polyadenylated RNA (poly(A)RNA) was studied using chick-pea (Cicer arietinum L.) embryonic axes subjected to treatments retarding germination (H2O 30°C and abscisic acid [ABA] 30°C) or inducing a false germination (thiourea 30°C) in which normal protein synthesis and growth did not occur. All treatments induced a smaller proportion of poly(A)RNA compared with the control (H2O 25°C). However, poly(A)RNA obtained in the presence of ABA had a similar in vitro activity to that of the control. The translation of mRNA from embryonic axes germinated at high temperatures was extensively blocked (70%) by methyl-7-guanosine-5′-triphosphate, whereas mRNA translation from axes treated with H2O-25°C and ABA was completely blocked (100%), indicating a greater cap dependence in the latter cases. Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis showed that ABA and H2O-30°C each induced the synthesis of a polypeptide with an approximate Mr of 32 kDa, probably a germination regulator. It is suggested that ABA and high temperatures could regulate germination at the translational level as well as affecting ionic-exchange properties, as has been previously demonstrated (Hernández-Nistal et al. 1983, Physiol. Plant. 57, 273–278).

Notes: Abstract Solitary hamartomatous duodenal polyps are a clinical entity considered until now to express an incomplete or initial form of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJ syndrome). Following our experience of 1 case, we analyzed the clinical characteristics of the 12 previously reported cases of solitary hamartomatous duodenal polyps. In none of these cases did we find any documentation of mucocutaneous pigmentation, a family or personal history of intestinal polyps, or local neoplasic degeneration of the disease, and all cases presented during the fifth or sixth decade of life. Thus, we conclude that solitary hamartomatous duodenal polyps constitute a different entity to PJ syndrome, the most appropriate elective treatment for which is endoscopic electrosurgical polypectomy.

Notes: Abstract Fourier transform algorithms are described using tensor (Kronecker) products and an associated class of permutations. Algebraic properties of tensor products and the related permutations are used to derive variants of the Cooley-Tukey fast Fourier transform algorithm. These algorithms can be implemented by translating tensor products and permutations to programming constructs. An implementation can be matched to a specific computer architecture by selecting the appropriate variant. This methodology is carried out for the Cray X-MP and the AT&T DSP32.

Notes: Abstract Several clones complementary to malate synthase mRNA have been identified in a complementary-DNA library to mRNA from castor bean endosperm. One of these clones has been used as a probe to measure levels of transcripts during seed germination and the effects of gibberellic acid and abscisic acid on these levels have been examined. Malate synthase transcripts increased during germination and GA3 advanced their appearance in the endosperm. Exogenously applied ABA inhibited the accumulation of transcripts over a time course of germination but the addition of GA3 counteracted its inhibitory effects. The data confirmed previous reports which indicated that the action of both growth regulators was on transcript accumulation and that there is a coordinated induction of the enzymes involved in the lipid metabolism in oil seeds.

Notes: Abstract The efficiency of different nitrogenous fertilizers under forced leaching conditions was determined in pot experiments using ryegrass as an indicator plant in a sandy loam soil. Treatments were: ON (unfertilized), AN (ammonium nitrate), U (urea), DAP (diammonium phosphate), T (Triabon), FK (Floranid Komplett) and CDU (crotonylidendiurea). N source effects on N uptake, and N leached (as % of N applied) were evaluated. Results show that the fertilizers which behaved best with regard to N uptake were FK followed by Triabon and AN. The most soluble fertilizers, AN and urea, gave the highest N leaching losses. Significant correlations between EUF-NI (rapidly soluble fraction) and leaching, as well as between EUF-N (I + II) and N uptake by the plant (where EUF-N II relates to the slowly soluble fraction) were obtained.
