Notes: A Fortran program for plotting contour maps of texture functions is described. The program works at high speed and is very flexible in application. For input the values of the texture function, which have been measured or calculated on a grid of mesh points, are required. From these data, the single-level lines of a contour map are calculated and plotted. Format and caption of the contour map as well as the marking of the level lines can be individually chosen. In the present paper the program is applied to direct and inverse pole figures as well as to a three-dimensional orientation distribution function (ODF) of a silver sheet deformed by 99.3%.

Notes: Summary Because of our own experiences with more than 10,000 cases of spinal anesthesia without neurologic complications, it is emphasized that the method has regained clinical importance due to modernized techniques, new local anesthetics (lidocain, mepivacain, bupivacain), and a better understanding of the pathomechanisms involved. Restricting the spinal block to the D 8 dermatome level, thus avoiding side effects, and sticking to a clear-cut range of contraindications renders spinal anesthesia a method that compares favorably with that of general anesthesia in the high-risk patient.

Notes: Abstract A new isotopic method for evaluation of inflammatory activity in rheumatoid arthritis is reported. By use of repeated whole body profile scanning a double tracer examination with 99mTc-pertechnetate and 113mIn-transferrin was performed. Total pertechnetate activity and total indium activity were measured over both hands, both feet, the ankles, and over the knee joints. In addition, the extravascular component of pertechnetate uptake and the ratio extravascular/total pertechnetate activity were calculated for these regions. The activity curves were followed up to 2 h after tracer injection in seven female patients presenting with rheumatoid arthritis and in six female controls. The four parameters calculated were compared and statistical analysis revealed the most significant discrimination of both groups for the ratio extravascular/total pertechnetate activity 2 h after injection (P(0.002).

Geringfügige Änderungen in verschiedenen Parametern riefen wieder Reaktionen hervor.

Notes: Summary Postoperative parenteral nutrition can only be optimally effective if the characteristics of post-traumatic metabolism are taken into account. Two main possibilities are discussed for the carbohydrate component of parenteral nutrition during this phase: glucose with high doses of insulin or non-glucose carbohydrates (sugar substitutes) possibly in a suitable combination with glucose. The risks as well as the technical and organisational problems involved in the use of them are discussed and the authors prefer the second of the two alternatives. Possible side effects of nonglucose carbohydrates are pointed out and it is shown how these can be avoided by observing dose guidelines. So far a combination of fructose : glucose : xylitol in a ratio of 2 : 1 : 1 with a total dose of 0.50 g/kg/hour has been studied most thoroughly. This combination normalises the fat metabolism and improves glucose tolerance without requiring exogenous insulin. Experiences with this combination as well as individual non-glucose carbohydrates in the postoperative phase are mentioned. Controlled infusions of non glucose carbohydrates on operated patients have been given continuously for up to 7 days and in some cases even for several weeks. No side effects, no deviations from a steady state and no abnormal changes of the laboratory values occurred. The authors are of the opinion that non glucose carbohydrates are necessary if the facilities for frequent blood sugar controls are not available.

Notes: Summary In anesthetized dogs the low-frequency input impedances (0.001 to 0.1 Hz) of different arterial beds were measured. The following arteries were perfused with blood by a servocontrolled pump in different experiments: Femoral, renal, superior mesenteric, and circumflex branch of the left coronary artery. Step and sinusoidal flow changes were used as input patterns. Furthermore, in the femoral artery the high-frequency input impedance was calculated from pulsatile pressure and flow. The pressure reactions to flow changes were interpreted by assuming a lead-lag autoregulatory control system consisting of two opposing components. The time constants of the two components were found to have characteristic values in different arterial beds and may vary depending on the condition of the experiment. The magnitude of the response usually depends on the mean perfusion pressure, indicating a nonlinear behaviour of the system. Furthermore in the renal artery a characteristic delayed pressure increase was observed after, short flow impulses. It is interesting to compare the general pattern of the pressure reaction to the input flow with the force response to stretch which, according to the literature, can be observed in certain striated muscle preparations. The mechanisms underlying the autoregulatory reactions described in this study appear to be, at least in part, a general feature of contratile tissues.
