Notes: A numerical method based on solution of the Orr–Sommerfeld equation is formulated to demonstrate the suppression of a two-dimensional, Tollmien–Schlichting-type, time-harmonic instability wave in a developing channel flow by a downstream secondary wave created through alternating suction and blowing at the surface. An analytical expression is derived providing the amplitude and a second parameter (the width or the phase) of the downstream surface-velocity distribution required to create a wave that will suppress the downstream continuation of the original disturbance.

Notes: The determination of indium in geological materials is difficult by usual analytical techniques because of their lack of sensitivity. Neutron activation analysis with special irradiation and counting conditions allows to determine indium ultra-traces with a quantitative detection limit about a few parts per billion. The method developed is fast and very sensitive and has been tested successfully for several American and French geochemical standards.

Six United States Geological Survey's (USGS) Geochemical Exploration References Samples (GXR) have been analyzed by instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA) for the determination of seventeen trace elements and by X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (XRFS) for other trace elements difficult to determine by INAA. Our results compare favourably with the values recommended by E.S. Gladney et al. Some suggestions and corrections are proposed to explain some discrepancies.

Notes: Abstract The transapical Cl− influx and transepithelial Na+ transport were measured in rabbit gallbladder. Only 11.7% of the transported Na+ was found to be accompanied by HCO 3 − . 10−4 M SITS eliminated the HCO 3 − dependent fraction of Cl− influx (50%) but did not significantly alter intracellular Na+ activity and Na+ transport. Exposure to HCO3-free salines or to 10−4 M acetazolamide about halved Cl− influx and Na+ transport. 25 mM SCN− reduced Cl− influx to zero, decreased intracellular Na+ activity, but only halved Na+ transport which under these conditions was abolished only in the absence of HCO 3 − . Exposure to a Cl−-free saline produced effects similar to those caused by SCN−. These resuits suggest that when Cl−/HCO 3 − exchange is inhibited at the apical membrane, Na+/H+ exchange and transepithelial Na+ transfer are unmodified if HCO 3 − is available for transport. The permanent uncoupling of the exchangers and the elevated transepithelial transport of Na+ are not due to an increased activity of the parallel Na+−Cl− cotransport but to a redirection of HCO 3 − flux toward the basolateral side.

Notes: Summary With T1-weighted gradient recalled echo (GRE) MR images and flow compensation, we studied the superior sagittal sinus in 3 normal volunteers and 3 patients with sinus occlusion. In these images, sites of patency of the superior sagittal sinus were identified due to the high signal intensity of the normal sinus. Tumor invading the sinus was nearly isointense with cerebral gray matter. T1-weighted GRE imaging proves to be an effective technique to evaluate sinus blood flow.

Notes: Summary The cottonwood tree, Populus deltoides, continues to produce leaves late into the growing season, exposing midseason herbivores to leaves of a wide range of maturity. Gypsy moth larvae preferred and grew best on the oldest cottonwood leaves and suffered higher mortality and 85% less growth when fed young, expanding leaves. Concentration of phenolics in the youngest leaves was 3 times that in the oldest leaves and was negatively correlated with caterpillar growth rate. The active phenolics were not identified; tannin was present but its concentration changed more with season than leaf age.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary Blood coagulatio and fibrinolysis were studied on 25 untrained male volunteers and on 10 highly trained athletes immediately after graduated exercise on a bicycle ergometer. We found, in particular, a shortening of the reaction time in the thrombelastogram, an accelerated thrombin formation and increased thrombin activity in the thrombin generation test, an increase of factor VIII activity, a shortening of thromboplastin times and a shortening of euglobulin lysis times in relationship to the degree of physical stress. Measurement of the three latter changes was conducted on a comparative basis between untrained subjects and highly trained athletes. Here the athletes showed lesser increases in activity as regards coagulation and fibrinolysis, in comparison to untrained persons of the same age during a standard exercise of 150 Watts. During maximal ergometer exercise the values of both test groups corresponded with one another to a large extent.

Notes: Summary In a 61-year-old woman recurrent bacterial infections were caused by immune neutropenia which was resistant to high-dose cortisone and plasmapheresis. However, high-dose intravenous 7S-immunoglobulin therapy (30 g for 6 days) induced a long-term remission for 35 months. This treatment modality is safe and should be used as a first-line agent.
