Notizen: Abstract  There have been conflicting reports about the occurrence and/or activity of atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) sensitive guanylyl cyclase in the immune system. This study reports on ANP-sensitive guanylyl cyclase mRNA expression and guanylyl cyclase activity in human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC). Reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) shows that activated human PBMC of healthy blood donors express functional active ANP-sensitive guanylyl cyclase after vitro culture, whereas freshly isolated PBMC show neither specific mRNA for particulate guanylyl cyclase nor ANP-sensitive activity of this enzyme. To define the subpopulation of PBMC expressing this enzyme, cultivated PBMC were subfractioned and analyzed by RT-PCR and in situ PCR. Only CD3+ PBMC showed mRNA for ANP-sensitive guanylyl cyclase. Induction of the guanylyl cyclase required coincubation with other cells, indicating that a factor or factors secreted from cells other than CD3+ cells induces this expression. In summary, ANP-sensitive guanylyl cyclase is an inducible enzyme in human CD3+ PBMC in contrast to other cells where it is considered to be constitutive.

Notizen: Background: In chronic sinusitis (CS), different subsets of leukocytes are involved in development of persistent inflammation of the nasal mucosa. The localization and differentiation of these infiltrating lymphocytes may help us to understand the inflammatory interactions in the epithelium, lamina propria, and seromucous glands of the nasal mucosa in CS. Methods: We examined frozen sections of inferior turbinates from 14 patients with nonallergic CS and 10 normal nonallergic controls. We used the avidin-biotin-peroxidase (ABC) technique with monoclonal antibodies against CD3 (total T cells), CD4 (T-helper/inducer cells), CD8 (T-suppressor/cytotoxic cells), CD22 (B cells), CD56 (natural killer cells), elastase (neutrophil granulocytes), eosinophil cationic protein (eosinophil granulocytes), and CD68 (macrophages). Results: We found significant increases (P〈0.05) of CD3, CD4, and CD8 T cells and B cells in the nasal mucosa of patients with CS. The number of CD68 cells and eosinophils showed no significant rise. Conclusions: The different types of leukocytes play a key role in the defense of the respiratory tract. The analysis of the distribution of cells in the epithelium, mucosa, and glands of the inferior turbinate confirmed that nonallergic CS is, in fact, chronic, bacterial rhinosinusitis involving the inferior turbinates, and that the pathomechanism is therefore different from that of nasal polyposis.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Summary The purpose of the study was to preoperatively investigate small laryngeal carcinomas using multi-slice spiral CT (MSCT) and subsequent multiplanar reconstructions (MPR) and to compare the results to the detailed spread found at surgery and histology. Nine patients with small (T1, T2) laryngeal cancer were investigated on a MSCT scanner (Siemens plus 4 Volume Zoom, Siemens). A 4×1 mm collimation, 120 kV, 200 mAs and a 0.5 seconds rotation time were used, allowing a coverage of the entire larynx in approximately 10 seconds within a single breathhold. Multiplanar reconstruction’s (MPR) in sagittal and coronal plane were reconstructed in all patients and rated in consensus reading. In 8 of nine patients, the glottic spread was detected by MSCT, in one cause of a supraglottic tumor a glottic invasion was excluded. The infiltration of the anterior commissure, the infiltration into the subglottic space and the extension into the hypopharynx was correctly assessed in all patients. MSCT was not able to predict infiltration of the arythnoids in two patients. The use of multi-slice spiral CT for the preoperative assessment of small laryngeal tumors shows great promise. The detection or exclusion of subtle spread of these tumors into the supra- or subglottic space and along the glottic level was possible with high accuracy. As the examination time is short, artifacts are rare and multiplanar reconstructions gain in clinical importance.

Notizen: Abstract. The correlator of vector heavy-quark currents at small q 2 is considered in the large- $\beta_0$ limit. The leading IR renormalon ambiguity of the sum of the perturbative series is canceled by the UV renormalon ambiguity of the gluon condensate. The asymptotic behavior of the perturbative series is obtained in a model-independent way, up to a single unknown normalization factor. Gluon-virtuality distribution functions for the perturbative correction are calculated.

Notizen: Abstract. The vacuum polarization due to a virtual heavy quark pair and specifically the coefficients of its Taylor expansion in the external momentum are closely related to moments of the cross section for quark-antiquark pair production in electron-positron annihilation. Relating measurement and theoretically calculated Taylor coefficients, an accurate value for charm- and bottom-quark mass can be derived, once corrections from perturbative QCD are sufficiently well under control. Up to three-loop order these have been evaluated previously. We now present a subset of four-loop contributions to the lowest two moments, namely those from diagrams which involve two internal loops from massive and massless fermions coupled to virtual gluons, hence of order $\alpha_s^3 n_f^2$ . The calculation demonstrates the applicability of Laporta’s algorithm to four-loop vacuum diagrams with both massive and massless propagators and should be considered a first step towards the full evaluation of the order $\alpha_s^3$ contribution.

Notizen: Abstract. Single top quark production in electron-photon interactions provides a clean environment for the measurement of the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix element V tb . Aiming at an experimental precision at the percent level the knowledge of radiative corrections is important. In this paper we present results for the radiative corrections in quantum chromodynamics.

Notizen: Abstract: Production cross-sections of charged pions, kaons and antikaons have been measured in C+C and C+Au collisions at beam energies of 1.0 and 1.8 AGeV for different polar emission angles. The kaon and antikaon energy spectra can be described by Boltzmann distributions whereas the pion spectra exhibit an additional enhancement at low energies. The pion multiplicity per participating nucleon M(π+)/〈A part〉 is a factor of about 3 smaller in C+Au than in C+C collisions at 1.0 AGeV whereas it differs only little for the C and the Au target at a beam energy of 1.8 AGeV. The K+ multiplicities per participating nucleon M(K+)/ 〈A part〉 are independent of the target size at 1 AGeV and at 1.8 AGeV. The K- multiplicity per participating nucleon M(K-)/ 〈A part〉 is reduced by a factor of about 2 in C+Au as compared to C+C collisions at 1.8 AGeV. This effect might be caused by the absorption of antikaons in the heavy target nucleus. Transport model calculations underestimate the K-/K+ ratio for C+C collisions at 1.8 AGeV by a factor of about 4 if in-medium modifications of K-mesons are neglected.
