Notizen: Abstract This article reviews the behavior of materials made up of a large assemblage of solid particles under rapid and quasi static deformations. The focus is on flows at relatively high concentrations and for conditions when the interstitial fluid plays an insignificant role. The momentum and energy exchange processes are then primarily governed by interparticle collisions and Coulomb-type frictional contact. We first discuss some physical behavior —dilatancy, internal friction, fluidization and particle segregation — that are typical to the understanding of granular flows. Bagnold's seminal Couette flow experiments and his simple stress analysis are then used to motivate the first constitutive theories that use a microstructural variable — the fluctuation energy or granular temperature — governing the subscale fluctuating motion. The kinetic theories formalize the derivation of the field equations of bulk mass, momentum and energy, and permit derivation of constitutive relations for stress, flux of fluctuation energy and its dissipation rate for simple particle assemblages and when frictional rubbing contact can be ignored. These statistical considerations also show that formulation of boundary conditions needs special attention. The frictional-collisional constitutive behavior in which both Coulomb-type rubbing contact and collisional encounters are significant are discussed. There is as yet no rigorous formulation. We finally present a phenomenological approach that describes rapid flows of granular materials under simultaneous transport of heat and close with a summary of stability analyses of the basic flow down an inclined plane.

Notizen: Abstract Few boundary-value problems in fluid mechanics can match the attention that has been accorded to the flow of fluids, Newtonian and non-Newtonian, between parallel rotating disks rotating about a common axis or about distinct axes. An interesting feature which has been recently observed is the existence of solutions that are not axially symmetric even in the case of flow due to the rotation of disks about a common axis. In this article we review the recent efforts that have been expended in the study of both symmetric and asymmetric solutions in the case of both the classical linearly viscous fluid and viscoelastic fluids.

Notizen: Summary The problem of radial diffusion of a fluid through a transversely isotropic non-linearly elastic thick spherical shell is studied. The anisotropic shell is also pre-stretched radially. The non-linear equations governing the diffusion through the shell are solved numerically. The effects of the anisotropy of the material and the pre-stretching on the process of diffusion are studied.

Notizen: Summary An electro-rheological fluid is a material in which a particulate solid is suspended in an electrically non-conducting fluid such as oil. On the application of an electric field, the viscosity and other material properties undergo dramatic and significant changes. In this paper, the particulate imbedded fluid is considered as a homogeneous continuum. It is assumed that the Cauchy stress depends on the velocity gradient and the electric field vector. A representation for the constitutive equation is developed using standard methods of continuum mechanics. The stress components are calculated for a shear flow in which the electric field vector, is normal to the velocity vector. The model predicts (i) a viscosity which depends on the shear rate and electric field and (ii) normal stresses due to the interaction between the shear flow and the electric field. These expressions are used to study several fundamental shear flows: the flow between parallel plates, Couette flow, and flow in an eccentric rotating disc device. Detailed solutions are presented when the shear response is that of a Bingham fluid whose yield stress and viscosity depends on the electric field.

Notizen: Summary The mechanics of flowing granular materials such as coal, sand, metal ores, etc., and their flow characteristics have received considerable attention in recent years as it has relevance to several important technological problems. In a number of instances, these materials are also heated prior to processing, or cooled after processing. The governing equations for the flow of granular materials, taking into account the heat transfer mechanism by conduction, are derived using a continuum model (cf. Goodman and Cowin [1], [2], Rajagopal and Massoudi [3]). For a fully developed flow of these materials down an inclined plane, the equations reduce to a system of coupled non-linear ordinary differential equations. The resulting boundary value problem is solved numerically and the results are presented for cases where the viscosity and thermal conductivity are assumed to be functions of the volume fraction. It is shown that the equations admit multiple solutions for certain values of the parameters.

Notizen: Summary In this paper, we investigate the problem of radial diffusion of fluids through a transversely isotropic hollow non-linearly elastic cylinder. The transversely isotropic cylinder is both sheared and stretched. We study in detail how shearing and stretching the cylinder affects the diffusion process. The influence of the anisotropy of the solid on diffusion is also determined. A comparison is made with previous work (cf. Gandhi, Rajagopal and Wineman [11]) on the radial diffusion of fluids through isotropic non-linearly elastic solids.

Notizen: Summary A pseudo-similarity solution has been obtained for the flow of an incompressible fluid of second grade past a wedge. The numerical method developed for this purpose enables computation of the flow characteristics for any value of the parametersK anda, whereK is the dimensionless normal stress modulus of the fluid, anda is related to the wedge angle. Results computed forKx wa varying from 0 to 200 show a marked decrease or increase in wall shear, depending upon the wedge angle, asx −2a /K increases from 0 to about 1; thereafter the change in wall shear stress is small. The present results match exactly with those from an earlier perturbation analysis forKx 2a ≦0.01 but differ significantly asKx 2a increases.

Notizen: Abstract We study the flow of an Oldroyd-B fluid between two intersecting plates, one of which is fixed and the other moving along its plane. This problem was first considered by Strauss (1975) for the Maxwell fluid using a similarity transformation. We find that even in the case of a Maxwell fluid, which can be obtained by setting a specific parameter, say σ, in the Oldroyd-B model to zero, our results disagree with those of Strauss (1975). We find that circulating cells are present, adjacent to the stationary plate while Strauss (1975) finds them adjacent to the moving plate. We also delineate the effect of the coefficient σ, which is a measure of the elasticity of the flow, on the flow pattern. We find that an increase in the elastic parameter reduces the cellular structure.

Notizen: Abstract In this paper, we study inhomogeneous deformations within the context of finite thermoelasticity with a view towards highlighting the developments of “boundary layer” like structures. We find that such structures manifest themselves by virtue of the material's ability to shear soften or shear stiffen. When the material moduli depend both on the temperature and the stretch, their effects can either reinforce or mitigate one another, thereby leading to the accentuation or annihilation of the boundary layer structure.
