    Notes: We report on investigations of the crystallographic structure and the magnetic anisotropies of epitaxial iron films deposited onto periodically stepped Ag(001) surfaces using low energy electron diffraction, x-ray diffraction, second harmonic generation (SHG), as well as the Brillouin light scattering (BLS) technique. The focus of the present study lies on the interrelation between the surface morphology of the buffer layers and the magnetic properties of the Fe films, epitaxially grown onto them. Especially the symmetry breaking at the atomic steps is found to create an uniaxial magnetic anisotropy measured by BLS and a very strong anisotropic signal in magnetic SHG. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: A new advanced space- and time-resolved Brillouin light scattering technique is used to study diffraction of two-dimensional beams and pulses of dipolar spin waves excited by strip-line antennas in tangentially magnetized garnet films. The technique is an effective tool for investigations of two-dimensional spin wave propagation with high spatial and temporal resolution. Nonlinear effects such as stationary and nonstationary self-focusing are investigated in detail. It is shown that nonlinear diffraction of a stationary backward volume magnetostatic wave (BVMSW) beam, having a finite transverse aperture, leads to self-focusing of the beam at one spatial point. Diffraction of a finite-duration (nonstationary) BVMSW pulse leads to space–time self-focusing and formation of a strongly localized two-dimensional wave packet (spin wave bullet). © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: The photoluminescence spectrum of melt-grown GaSe single crystals was investigated with a confocal Raman microscope equipped with a HeNe laser. Three luminescence bands of different intensity were observed, which are mainly located to the blue of the laser line. The luminescence signals show a quadratic dependence on excitation intensity. The effect is interpreted as second-harmonic generation in the strongly optically nonlinear material followed by the excitation of electrons into the conduction band and luminescence emission from direct-gap Wannier excitons. The relative intensities of the three luminescence peaks exhibit a spatial variation on the crystal surface, which was mapped with the confocal microscope. Possible explanations of this effect are discussed. In an external electric field the luminescence shows a strong increase and a quadratic redshift, whose magnitude is consistent with the Franz–Keldysh mechanism. © 2002 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report results of the switching properties of thin magnetic films described by Stoner-like magnetic blocks subject to ultrashort, laterally localized magnetic field pulses, obtained by numerical investigations. Perpendicularly magnetized films exhibit a magnetization reversal due to a 4 ps magnetic field pulse, which can be explained with a coherent rotation model. Although the magnetic field pulse is short compared to the ferromagnetic resonance precession time, the time needed for the relaxation of the magnetization to the equilibrium state is rather large. In addition, we show numerical results for the magnetization reversal of an in-plane magnetized sample with uniaxial in-plane anisotropy. © 2000 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: We report on the exchange bias effect as a function of the in-plane direction of the applied field in twofold symmetric, epitaxial Ni80Fe20/Fe50Mn50 bilayers grown on Cu(110) single-crystal substrates. An enhancement of the exchange bias field, Heb, up to a factor of 2 is observed if the external field is nearly, but not fully aligned perpendicular to the symmetry direction of the exchange bias field. From the measurement of the exchange bias field as a function of the in-plane angle of the applied field, the unidirectional, uniaxial and fourfold anisotropy contributions are determined with high precision. The symmetry direction of the unidirectional anisotropy switches with increasing NiFe thickness from [11¯0] to [001]. © 1999 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Glial cell line-derived neurotrophic factor (GDNF) protects dopaminergic neurones against toxic and physical damage. In addition, GDNF promotes differentiation and structural integrity of dopaminergic neurones. Here we show that GDNF can support the function of primary dopaminergic neurones by triggering activation of GTP-cyclohydrolase I (GTPCH I), a key enzyme in catecholamine biosynthesis. GDNF stimulation of primary dopaminergic neurones expressing both tyrosine 3-monooxygenase and GTPCH I resulted in a dose-dependent doubling of GTPCH I activity, and a concomitant increase in tetrahydrobiopterin levels whereas tyrosine 3-monooxygenase activity was not altered. Actinomycin D, asan inhibitor of de novo biosynthesis, abolished any GDNF-mediated up-regulation of GTPCH I activity. However, GTPCH I mRNA levels in primary dopaminergic neurones were not altered by GDNF treatment, suggesting that the mode of action for that up-regulation is not directly connected to the regulation of GTPCH I transcription. We conclude that GDNF, in addition to its action in structural differentiation, also promotes differentiation regarding expression and enzymatic activity of a crucial component in the dopaminergic biosynthetic pathway.

    Notes: Abstract: Capsaicin stimulates cyclic GMP production via nitric oxide (NO) (or another nitrosyl factor) in dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons maintained in culture. The purpose of the present study was to characterize further capsaicin stimulation of cyclic GMP production in DRG cells maintained in culture, investigate other algesic and/or inflammatory agents for effects on cyclic GMP production, and examine cells responsible for NO production and cyclic GMP production. Capsaicin stimulation of cyclic GMP production in DRG cells was dose dependent, receptor mediated, and attenuated by hemoglobin. Prostaglandin E2, substance P, and calcitonin gene-related peptide did not affect basal, capsaicin-stimulated, or bradykinin-stimulated cyclic GMP production. Other inflammatory or algesic agents, including serotonin, histamine, ATP, glutamate, aspartate, and NMDA, did not affect cyclic GMP production. Pretreatment of DRG cells with lipopolysaccharide increased basal cyclic GMP production in neuronal but not in nonneuronal cultures and facilitated stimulation of cyclic GMP production by l-arginine. Capsaicin pretreatment of neuronal DRG cultures, which destroys capsaicin-sensitive (small diameter) afferent neurons, attenuated capsaicin- and bradykinin-stimulated cyclic GMP production but did not affect basal or sodium nitroprusside-stimulated cyclic GMP production. These results indicate that capsaicin elicits production of a nitrosyl factor via capsaicin-sensitive (small diameter) neurons. Capsaicin evoked cyclic GMP production in nonneuronal DRG cultures in the presence but not in the absence of apposed neuronal DRG cultures. Overall, these findings suggest that specific exogenous (or endogenous) substances may stimulate production of a nitrosyl factor(s) by a subset of DRG neurons, and nitrosyl factors produced by these neurons may affect cyclic GMP production in neighboring neuronal or non-neuronal cells.

    Notes: We communicate a detailed study of the epitaxial growth of CeO2 on MgO. The key feature of the growth is the dependence of the in-plane orientation of the CeO2 epitaxial layer on the MgO surface morphology. Atomic force microscopic (AFM) measurements, x-ray analyses, as well as high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) investigations reveal that on rough substrates a cube-on-cube growth of CeO2 on MgO occurs while on smooth substrates the CeO2 unit cell is rotated around the surface normal by 45° with respect to the MgO unit cell when the deposition rate is low (∼0.3 A(ring)/s) during the first stages of growth. This growth mechanism can be used for a defined fabrication of 45° grain boundaries in the CeO2 layer by controlling the surface roughness of the MgO substrate. This report demonstrates that these 45° grain boundaries may be used to fabricate YBa2Cu3O7−x Josephson junctions. © 1995 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: Static magnetic and spin wave properties of square lattices of permalloy micron dots with thicknesses of 500 and 1000 Å and with varying dot separations have been investigated. A magnetic fourfold anisotropy was found for the lattice with dot diameters of 1 μm and a dot separation of 0.1 μm. The anisotropy is attributed to an anisotropic dipole–dipole interaction between magnetically unsaturated parts of the dots. The anisotropy strength (order of 105 erg/cm3) decreases with increasing in-plane applied magnetic field. © 1997 American Institute of Physics.

    Notes: All contributing magnetic anisotropies in (110)-oriented exchange biased Ni80Fe20/Fe50Mn50 double layers prepared by molecular beam epitaxy on Cu(110) single crystals have been determined by means of Brillouin light scattering. Upon covering the Ni80Fe20 films by Fe50Mn50, a unidirectional anisotropy contribution appears, which is consistent with the measured exchange bias field. The uniaxial and fourfold in-plane anisotropy contributions are largely modified by an amount, which scales with the Ni80Fe20 thickness, indicating an interface effect. The strong uniaxial anisotropy contribution shows an in-plane switching of the easy axis from [11¯0] to [001] with increasing Ni80Fe20-layer thickness. The large mode width of the spin wave excitations, which exceeds the linewidth of uncovered Ni80Fe20 films by a factor of more than six, indicates large spatial variations of the exchange coupling constant. © 1998 American Institute of Physics.
