Die kupferchlorid-katalysierte Addition von Alkoholen an aliphatische Carbodiimide (insbesondere Diisopropylcarbodiimid) zu O,N,N′-Trialkyl-isoharnstoffen erlaubt im Fall bifunktioneller Hydroxyverbindungen - α-Hydroxycarbonsäureester, Diole, Halogenalkohole, Aminoalkohole und cyclische Hydroxyäther - Folgereaktionen zu 5-, 6- und 7-gliedrigen 1,3-O,N- oder 1,3-N,N-Heterocyclen. O,N,N′-Trialkyl-isoharnstoffe sind selektive Alkylierungsmittel. So lassen sich Alkohole mit Allylstruktur mit Hilfe von Diisopropyl-carbodiimid veräthern; eine neue Veresterungsmethode über O,N,N′-Trialkyl-isoharnstoffe wurde an der Mesitylencarbonsäure angewendet.
