Notes:
Summary Cortical and medullary blood flow of the kidney was evaluated both in sodium depleted (rice diet) and in chronic sodium resp. urea loaded rats (800 mOsm/1 NaC1-resp. urea solution as drink-water). It was proved, whether there exists a correlation between the hemodynamics and the kind of osmotic loading of the kidney.86Rb was used as an indicator of renal hemodynamics. Results: 1. In the urine of sodium depleted rats the concentration of sodium resp. urea is only 28 ± 6 mOsm/1 resp. 82 ± 6 mOsm/1. After high sodium uptake the sodium concentration of the urine rises to 660 ± 27 mOsm/1, whereas the urea concentration is unchanged (90 ± 14 mOsm/1). After high urea uptake the urea concentration in the urine is enriched to 709 ± 30 mOsm/1, whereas for sodium a value of 42 ± 31 mOsm/1 is obtained. 2. In sodium depleted, hydrated animals a cardiac output of 465 ± 104 cc/kg · min is obtained. After chronic hypertonic sodium- resp. urea uptake cardiac output is measured to 446 ± 70 resp. 530 ± 120 cc/kg · min. 3. In sodium depletion the cortical and medullary blood flow is measured as follows: cortex 3.25 ± 0.84 cc, outer medulla 1.57 ± 0.65 cc, inner medulla 0.75 ± 0.30 cc and papillary tip 0.85 ± 0.40 cc/g · min. In sodium concentrating kidneys the regional blood flow increases by 20% in the cortex, by 27% in the outer medulla, by 15% in the inner medulla and by 40% in the papillary tip. This increase is not significant. In urea concentrating kidneys the blood flow increases by 45% (P 〈 0.0125) in the cortex, by 58% (P 〈 0.05) in the outer medulla, by 25% (P = n.s.) in the inner medulla and by 120% (P 〈 0.01) in the papillary tip. The data indicate that the control mechanisms of the renal hemodynamics are not only a simple function of the cardiac output. The enlarged medullary blood flow in sodium- and especially in urea concentrating kidneys is not associated with a wash out of the hypertonic interstitium. We propose a special function of the renal blood flow in sodium and urea concentrating kidneys.
