Description / Table of Contents:
The reaction of CCl2F2 with metal oxides or carbonates between 450 and 800°C leads either to the corresponding fluorides or to the chlorides. High purity anhydrous fluorides of Mg, Al, the rare earths, Zr, Th and U have been obtained quantitatively by this way. Replacement of the oxides of these metals by their chlorides yields the fluorides too. Nb2O5 and Ta2O5 react to give the oxide fluorides. The oxides of Cr, Fe, Ru, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, Hg and Ga only form the corresponding chlorides, whereas those of Mo, W, Re and Bi mainly lead to oxide chlorides. Fluoride chlorides result from the reaction with SrCO3, BaCO3 and PbO. Mistures of different compounds are only found in the case of Li, Tl, Ti, V, Sb, Mo and W.
Notes:
