    Notes: A procedure is proposed for simultaneously handling the problem of optimal heat integration while performing the optimization of process flow sheets. The method is based on including a set of constraints into the nonlinear process optimization problem so as to insure that the minimum utility target for heat recovery networks is featured. These heat integration constraints, which do not require temperature intervals for their definition, are based on a proposed representation for locating pinch points that can vary according to every set of process stream conditions (flow rates and temperatures) selected in the optimization path. The underlying mathematical formulations correspond to nondifferentiable optimization problems, and an efficient smooth approximation method is proposed for their solution. An example problem on a chemical process is presented to illustrate the economic savings that can be obtained with the proposed simultaneous approach. The method reduces to simple models for the case of fixed flow rates and temperatures.

    Notes: The rate of reaction of calcined limestone with SO2 and O2 was measured at conditions that eliminate all resistances not associated with the CaO grain surface. Reactivity increased with the square of the BET surface area when grain size was varied as an experimental parameter. The observed effects of surface area and temperature account for the SO2 capture reported for boiler tests of the limestone injection process.

    Notes: Electrochemical techniques are used to show that drag-reducing polymers decrease the magnitude and the frequency of mass transfer fluctuations. Measurements of the frequency spectrum of the mass transfer fluctuations allow calculation of the normal component of velocity fluctuations in the immediate vicinity of the wall. This information is used to interpret the observed effect of drag-reducing polymers on the rate of mass transfer.

    Notes: A chemical diffusion-kinetic model is developed for the acidic oil/caustic system of alkaline flooding by proposing a set of interfacial reactions leading to in situ generation of surfactants. The rate constants of interfacial reactions are independent of aqueous phase compositions. In Part I, the model is applied for determining these rate constants from its correlation with dynamic interfacial tension data obtained using the spinning drop tensiometer. The relative magnitudes of the rate constants characterizing the adsorption/desorption barriers are shown to govern the extent of dynamic interfacial tension minimum.

    Notes: A novel method for tracking particle size distribution dynamics in a fluidized bed yields on-line, real-time measurements of particle size distribution that are representative of actual conditions. These measurements are somewhat corrupted with noise (random error), however, and are available to the computer only at discrete time intervals. An optimal filtering algorithm combines the measurements with predictions from an idealized dynamic model to yield particle size distribution estimates that are not only on-line and real-time, but also virtually continuous and well-behaved.

    Notes: Recycle of material or energy can change the effective dynamic behavior of a process. Distillation towers are inherently recycle processes. Published tower time constants based on linear analysis have been substantially in error when compared to actual responses for many cases. The reason for this error is shown to be the recycle nature of distillation towers. An improved method of estimating time constants, which can be extended to industrial towers, is presented.

    Notes: A simple model for advancing dynamic menisci of the interface between two immiscible fluids is proposed on the hypothesis that there is a monomolecular film which precedes an apparent contact line and that a frictional force due to the solid surface is balanced with the interfacial tension forces on the film. An analytical solution for dynamic contact angles on vertical and inclined solid surfaces of plates is obtained as a function of the interfacial capillary number, the static contact angle, and the parameters of Langumuir's duplex film model. An analytical solution for dynamic meniscus heights is also derived. The analytical solutions are compared with previous experimental data. The agreement between the theoretical and experimental results is found to be fairly good, average deviations being 3.8 and 12%, respectively, for dynamic contact angles and dynamic meniscus heights at the solid surface.

    Notes: The thermal decomposition of Colorado oil shale was studied at subpyrolysis temperatures, 533 to 611 K, as part of an investigation of rates of supercritical extraction. Thermal degradation followed by solution in the solvent is a possible, partial explanation for the enhanced solubility at supercritical conditions for a complex mixture such as kerogen.In the region of the critical temperature of toluene, up to 26% of the kerogen in the original shale was converted by thermal reactions to gases and soluble (in toluene at 298 K and 101 kPa) products. The kinetics of the decomposition of the insoluble organics in shale could be explained by a combination of series and parallel reactions.

    Notes: The relative influence of dispersed-phase viscosity and interfacial tension on equilibrium drop size and drop size distribution is studied for dilute suspensions by dispersing various silicone oils in water, methanol, and their solutions. Correlations for Sauter mean diameter, D32, are developed in terms of system variables using the mechanistic models of Part I. Drop sizes for low to moderate viscosity dispersed phases are normally distributed in volume and can be correlated by normalization with D32. Trends in the distributions are explained in terms of a parameter representing the relative resistance to breakage.

    Notes: A separation theory in thermal diffusion columns with a permeable vertical barrier has been derived by making use of the orthogonal expansion method. It is shown that the undesirable remixing effect can be effectively reduced and controlled by introducing a permeable vertical barrier.     Notes: A low-order modeling technique for separation processes is developed by considering a staged column as a compartment system in which a number of stage are lumped to form an equivalent stage. This method leads to low-order models of separation processes directly and without linearization. Moreover, the resulting models have state variables and parameters that are physically significant. In contrast to alternative model reduction methods, compartmental analysis guarantees preservation of both material balances and steady states for arbitrary changes in the input variables.A comparison of compartmental analysis to a recently proposed technique based on orthogonal collocation, both methods incorporating an equimolal overflow assumption, shows the efficiency and robustness of the compartmental method.

    Notes: Numerical solutions to the unaveraged mass balance equation for the case of a flat mobile interface reveal that both high- and low-frequency velocity fluctuations can contribute to mass transfer. This is in contrast to transport to a solid boundary where only low-frequency fluctuations, normal to the wall, are important. The average mass transfer coefficient is found to depend on Schmidt number to the -0.5 power, in agreement with classical theories. It is related to the velocity field in the liquid primarily through the mean-square value of the gradient of normal velocity fluctuations at the interface.

    Notes: A recently developed error-in-variables method of calculating regression parameters was applied to the modeling of gas-solid adsorption equilibria. The method accounts for error in all experimental variables in the regression calculations. Regression coefficients from pure component data calculated by the new method were used to predict multicomponent equilibria.     Notes: The tendency for aggregation and disruption of aggregates of calcium oxalate dihydrate (CaOx) crystals in urinelike mother liquor was quantitatively studied in a two-stage mixed-suspension, mixed-productremoval crystallizer/Couette-flow aggregator operated in series. The degree of aggregation was obtained by comparing measured numbersize and volume-size crystal distributions in the crystallizer and aggregator outlets. Aggregation was a strong function of CaOx supersaturation and may have changed slightly with rotation speed in the Couette-flow aggregator. Rupture of the aggregates increased as the spindle rotation in the aggregator increased (presumably increasing turbulence). Average shear rates in these experiments were appreciably above estimated physiological levels.

    Notes: Simplified vent sizing equations for emergency relief requirements in reaction kettles and storage vessels are obtained from analytical consideration. Venting modes include homogeneous-vessel venting, all-vacor venting, and all-liquid venting; energy sources due to runaway chemical reactions and external heating are treated separately. The resulting equations have been shown via numerical examples to yield good agreement with detailed computer simulations, both in terms of temperature and pressure histories during venting and in vent size predictions. These equations are generally applicable over a wide range of overpressure situations and reduce to the correct limit at no overpressure. The relative merit of allowing for overpressure in various venting modes can be demonstrated using these equations. Because of their simple forms, requiring only pertinent physical property and thermal data, these equations readily lend themselves to quick but accurate vent sizing predictions.

    Notes: A time-domain solution in the form of infinite series for the break-through curves is derived for zeolite adsorbers. Three diffusion steps are accounted for in the solution: external film, macropore, and micropore. The solution is based on the assumption that the concentration profiles in micropores and macropores are both parabolic.Based on the analytic solution, a simple criterion is given for the relative importance of the three individual mass transfer resistances. The adsorber behavior is determined by four independent dimensionless parameters. For the commercial zeolite sorbents, the bed behavior is dominated by two parameters: Henry's law constant (K) and the parameter M2, which is the product of the stoichiometric time (L/v) and the time constant for macropore diffusion (Dp/Ro2).The analytic solution is in good agreement with experimental data for the breakthrough curves of nitrogen and methane carried in helium in 5A zeolite beds. When reduced to monodisperse pores, the solution is also in good agreement with Rosen's exact solution.

    Notes: The two-scale turbulence concept is recommended for modeling the turbulence in a baffled vessel equipped with a Rushton-type turbine impeller. A three-equation isotropic turbulence model is proposed that employs the balance equations for: the kinetic energy of the large scale vortices; the kinetic energy of the inertial subrange eddies; and the dissipation rate of the small-scale turbulence. The energy transfer rate from the large-scale vortices is prescribed algebraically. Flow patterns are modeled by solving the transport equations for vorticity, stream function, and tangential momentum. The Reynolds stresses are modeled by means of the effective viscosity, based on the three-equation model of turbulence. The calculated profiles of the mean velocity at the tank wall agree with experimental data obtained in the same system by means of a Pitot tube.

    Notes: This paper describes a study of the possibility of using point efficiencies, measured in a small laboratory column, in the scale-up of distillation efficiencies. The conditions on a large rectangular tray were closely duplicated in a small glass Oldershaw column with one sieve tray having similar hole size and percent free area. Point efficiencies on the large rectangular sieve tray were deduced from the composition profiles and compared with the point efficiencies measured in the small column. A simple relationship between the two columns was found in terms of the froth heights and liquid holdups. The results demonstrate that the slightly lower point efficiencies measured in the Oldershaw column could be used in conjunction with a mathematical mass transfer model based on the eddy diffusion concept, to relate the point efficiencies to the tray efficiences, resulting in a conservative design provided either that allowance is made for other factors, such as nonuniform flow patterns and stagnant zones, or that these are eliminated. A wide range of composition was covered using the two systems MeOH-nPrOH and EtOH-nPrOH operating in the froth region.

    Notes: The separation of a He—CH4 mixture containing 9.95 mol% He in permeator modules that incorporate two different types of polymer membranes was studied theoretically and experimentally. The membranes were symmetric dense capillaries of silicone rubber and asymmetric hollow fibers of cellulose triacetate. These membranes exhibit reverse selectivities for He and CH4, silicone rubber being more permeable to CH4, and cellulose triacetate more permeable to He. The simultaneous use of these two types of membranes in a permeator enhances the enrichment and recovery of He compared to the levels obtained with a single-membrane permeator utilizing either membrane alone. The experimental results were found to confirm the theoretical predictions, the agreement being better at the lower stage cuts.

Results quantitatively describe the wide variation in peak retention times that are caused by phase equilibrium and chromatographic interference, the best solution models doing so to within or near experimental error. The chromatographic method is capable of detecting differences and peculiarities in the various polymer solution models in both the accuracy of the calculated retention times and the sensitivities of the calculations to the model parameters. Perturbation chromatography offers some unique capabilities for multicomponent vapor-liquid equilibrium determinations.

    Notes: Ultrafine spherical titanium, silicon, and aluminium oxide particles were prepared by the thermal decomposition of their alkoxide vapors, produced by evaporation and subsequent heating. High-concentration ultrafine particles having geometric mean diameters ranging between 0.01 and 0.06 μm and a geometric standard deviation of about 1.4 were obtained by varying the temperatures of the evaporator containing the liquid alkoxides and the reactor furnace, and the flow rate of carrier gas. For furnace temperatures lower than 400°C for TiO2 and 1000°C for SiO2 and Al2O3, the particles obtained were found to be amorphous. The observed changes in the particle size distributions due to changes in operating conditions were compared with those predicted theoretically by solving the discrete-continuous aerosol general dynamic equation accounting for coagulation and generation of monomer by thermal decomposition. The effect of monomer number concentration on the size distribution of generated particles was found to be qualitatively explained.

    Notes: The different behavior of fluid density and viscosity in going from the dilute gas to the dense fluid state gives rise to kinematic viscosities which, in the near supercritical region, are lower than for liquid metals. As a consequence, the relative importance of natural convection (as measured by the ratio of buyoant to inertial forces) is two orders of magnitude higher in a supercritical fluid (at constant Reynolds number) than in normal liquids.Binary diffusion coefficients of nonvolatile solutes in supercritical fluids were measured with a technique that involved laminar flow and diffusion in a rectangular channel. The solution to this hydrodynamic problem is presented. By varying the inclination of the solute source plane with respect to the horizontal position, apparent diffusion coefficients were measured that were up to six times higher than the “true” coefficients.Experimental binary diffusion coefficients, including published literature data, were analyzed in the light of hydrodynamic (Stokes-Einstein) theory. The analysis suggests that under the high-density, low-viscosity conditions that characterize supercritical fluids, hydrodynamic behavior at the molecular level is approached, and can be used as a basis for data extrapolation.

    Notes: The dew points of 40 multicomponent fluid mixtures including gas condensates, absorber oils, crude oils, synthetic aromatic heavy oils, and coal liquids were calculated using the method of continuous thermodynamics and the Patel-Teja cubic equation of state. These multicomponent mixtures were characterized by a log normal distribution function in two variables: the boiling point and specific gravity in this work. Comparisons were made with the case when a single variable distribution function is employed and also with the method of Cotterman et al. In general, the new method leads to excellent predictions of both phase equilibria and liquid densities.

    Notes: Air lift pumps are finding increasing use where pump reliability and low maintenance are required, and where corrosive, abrasive, or radioactive fluids must be handled. Although air lifts are used in nuclear fuel reprocessing plants, no general, theoretically sound equation has been proposed in the literature for tall air lift design. Such an equation is developed from two-phase flow theory to predict the height to which an air lift pump operating in the slug flow regime can lift a given volumetric flow rate of liquid, given the air flow rate and pressure at the point of gas introduction. The widely used drift-flux model for the prediction of holdup is combined with an approximate relationship to predict pressure loss, and is substituted into the total pressure differential. Integration of the resulting equation provides an explicit formula for the calculation of lift. Experimental work using a variety of liquids in a 38 mm dia. air lift test installation supports the new design equation and demonstrates its flexibility.

    Notes: Thermal gasification has been proposed as one technical option for the conversion of coal to gaseous fuels and/or chemicals to supplement supplies presently derived from petroleum and natural gas. In the present study, a bench-scale fluidized bed reactor was used for the gasification of coal with steam as the fluidizing medium. A mixture of sand and limestone used as the bed material made it possible to gasify a caking coal without the problem of agglomeration. The gas composition and yield of the hydrogen-rich product gas were studied as a function of temperature.To study the heterogeneous reactions taking place in the reactor and also the transient behavior of the system, a mathematical model was developed. The model assumed a reaction mechanism that accounted for the devolatilization of coal, cracking of volatiles, char gasification, and the water-gas shift reaction. Both the dynamic behavior and steady state performance of the gasifier were simulated based on the model. The steady state results of the simulation were compared with the experimental data. This comparison enabled us to ascertain that the proposed reaction mechanism and dynamic model predicted the correct trends.

Two averaging level controllers, the ramp controller and the optimal predictive controller are developed utilizing the optimal control policy. These controllers are compared with previously reported averaging level controllers for step and sinusoidal disturbances in inlet flow rate.     Notes: The liquid holdup and the pressure drop for two-phase trickling flow in a packed bed were measured experimentally. Different values of those parameters were obtained as the liquid flow rate was increased and then decreased, indicating a multiplicity in hydrodynamic states. This behavior was observed even when the gas flow rate was zero in the bed. It was determined that the hysteresis exhibited by the process is due to imperfect wetting of the packing and to the difference between advancing and receding contact angles at the gas-liquid-solid contact lines. The reduced wetting conditions are also the cause of the increase in liquid holdup observed when the surface tension of the liquid is decreased. In this case, the amount of liquid retained in the bed is controlled by the extension of the wetted regions due to the more favorable contact angles as the surface tension decreases. The transition from the trickling to the pulsing flow regime was also dependent on the history of the process.A new correlation for predicting liquid holdups and pressure drops for trickling flow in packed beds is proposed for the decreasing liquid flow rate operating mode. This correlation is based on the experimental determination of the liquid phase relative permeability as a function of the the liquid phase reduced saturation and the determination of the gas phase relative permeability as a function of the gas phase saturation and the gas phase Reynolds number. The new data are analyzed in the light of the theory developed in the first part of this paper.

    Notes: In solving the nonlinear algebraic equations that are normally used to model multicomponent separation processes, one is not guaranteed that Newton's method or any of its relatives will converge to the solution. This paper describes two homotopies and their use in the solution of difficult equilibrium stage separation process problems. The first, the Newton homotopy, is able to solve more problems than a standard implementation of Newton's method but is not the most reliable homotopy. Since the equations being solved no longer model a separation process unit, the Newton homotopy sometimes suffers from intermediate solutions that are physically meaningless. The second, the thermodynamic homotopy, is strongly based on the thermodynamic properties of the systems involved. This new homotopy is able to handle not only the more traditional distillation problems (hydrocarbon systems and mildly nonideal systems), but is also extremely effective at solving azeotropic and extractive distillation problems. The implementation of these methods requires only minor modifications to existing software.

    Notes: A light depolarization method was used to measure the interfacial area of froth on a sieve plate. The effects of hydrodynamics and the presence of electrolytes on the magnitude of the interfacial area were studied. The results obtained for pure water and for two different aqueous solutions of inorganic salts were compared. In the case of aqueous electrolyte solutions the size distributions of ionic bubbles and the fraction of interfacial area contributed by these bubbles were determined by a photographic method. It was found that the interfacial area generated in aqueous electrolyte solutions was considerably (about 30%) greater than the interfacial area generated in pure water, and that about 45% of the total interfacial area in the former case was contributed by ionic bubbles which formed a separate population.

    Notes: The extent to which dispersed-phase viscosity influences equilibrium mean drop size and drop size distribution at constant interfacial tension is determined for dilute suspensions by dispersing silicone oils of various viscosity grades in water. A mechanistic model for mean drop size is developed which predicts the moderate-viscosity data and whose parameters correlate the high-viscosity results. Trends in the mean size data coincide with those for the drop size distribution, which broadens considerably as viscosity increases and suggests a dependency on breakage mechanism.

    Notes: The concept of block relative gain (BRG) is introduced to define a measure of interaction for decentralized control structures. This new theoretical development generalizes the original Bristol's relative gain array (RGA) to block pairing of inputs and outputs that are not necessarily single-input single-output pairings. Various properties of BRG are rigorously derived and formulated in a mathematical framework suited to analysis and synthesis. Based on these important properties, a methodology is developed for the systematic generation and selective screening of alternative decentralized control structures. Subsequently, a controller design procedure for the most promising decentralized structures is given. A boiler furnace and a system of heat-integrated reactors are used to illustrate the significance and the utility of the proposed method for industrial processes.

    Notes: In recent years there has been extensive interest in feedback control systems that automatically adjust their controller settings to compensate for changes in the process or the environment. Such systems are referred to as adaptive controllers. This survey paper reviews the current state of the art in adaptive control from a process control perspective and describes leading design techniques. Potential operating problems associated with adaptive control schemes are considered. A survey of experimental applications of adaptive control systems to process control problems is also included.

    Notes: A pole-placement self-tuning controller has been used to control a fixed-bed autothermal reactor conducting the water-gas shift reaction at both an upper stable state and a middle unstable state. Excellent set-point tracking and disturbance rejection characteristics were obtained using a single manipulated variable, the heat input at the entrance to the catalyst bed, to control a single bed temperature. Excellent set-point tracking during the transition from the upper state to the middle state was obtained by using a technique that tuned the closed-loop poles on-line so as to give an optimal response.

    Notes: A mathematical model is developed to simulate the drying of hygroscopic porous media and, in particular, of wood. Drying rate experiments were performed using wood specimens and a nonhygroscopic porous ceramic solid and were simulated using the appropriate version of the drying model. Calculated model predictions are in very satisfactory agreement with experimental results. An examination of the relative impacts on drying of the transport mechanisms that comprise the model leads to meaningful interpretations of observed drying behavior. Controlling rate factors can be identified and different types of drying behavior specific to a given material or drying condition can be explained and understood through model simulation studies. Such capability can provide important guidance for drying process design and control.

    Notes: Multiresponse kinetic models are established for the low-temperature oxidation (LTO) reactions of Athabasca oil sands bitumen. The models provide adequate description of the overall rate of oxygen consumption and of the reactions of the liquid phase bitumen components. The LTO models are suitable for use in the in situ combustion numerical simulators of the oil sands.

    Notes: Based on the concept of reactions in a continuum, a mathematical model has been developed to simulate coal liquefaction kinetics. In an excess hydrogen donor environment, the rate-limiting reactions are considered to be irreversible cracking reactions involving cleavage of carbon and oxygen linkages. Concurrent evolution of a wide spectrum of products, with an initial rapid formation of species of high carbon and oxygen contents, followed by progressively slower reactions leading to lower carbon and oxygen content species is predicted. Simple lumping functions are employed to obtain conventional lumped pseudocomponents (preasphaltenes, asphaltenes, and oils). Parameter analysis has been carried out.

    Notes: This study was designed to evaluate the effects of internal droplet convection on the extraction that occurs during generation of a dispersed phase. A photographic determination of dispersed-phase controlled mass transfer from liquid droplets in the formation stage demonstrates a strong dependence on formation time. Convection appears to control mass transfer during rapid drop formation, but an abrupt transition in transfer coefficient occurs as time of formation increases. Diffusion calculations overestimate total extraction for long formation times.
